Detailed Reviews
We booked online and got one of the horseshoe RV spots on the river and enjoyed our one night stay. Our check-in process was being handed a map upon arrival with the WiFi password There was no checkout…maybe since we paid online and we left just after dawn. Overly friendly staff/non-owner residents could be a bit much for some, but not us; we enjoyed the company/conversation. The location is quaint, quiet and serene. Location is smaller than it appears in pictures. We had free WiFi, hookups and shore power.

Nice full hook-up RV spaces; most have mature shade trees. Walking distance to the little town of Mayhill. A pavilion available for rental and a couple of cabins. Laundry, baths, and showers. No pool or rec hall.

We truly enjoyed our three night stay. The owners and managers were welcoming and friendly. The bath house has two large individual restrooms that each have a shower. We took our 8 year old boy and he had such a great time and spotted some deer close to camp. Rio Penasco is a nice small river that runs thru camp that was very relaxing to hear in the background and has a walking trail next to it. We will definitely stay here again.

We rented the Mountain Cabin and it ended up being a double wide trailer that had a partitioned off and shared with the owners. The day after we got there, someone on the other side of the trailer was smoking weed and it was coming through our vents. We initially rented the cabin so we could have privacy ( it advertised as secluded) but we felt like we had no privacy. When we checked in, we were told by the front desk that we could hike up the hill to have a campfire. When we got up there, it was good...there was a campfire ring for the kids to make smores and there were tree branches that had been cut that were leaning against a tree. The kids loved it and thought it would be cool to make a fort out of them. We helped out kids arrange them to make a tee-pee....in the exact same area and leaning against the exact same tree that they were on when we got there. The owner walked up the hill and told us to make sure we didnt burn them because they were going to use them to build fence. We assured him we werent and that we had got our own firewood. Shortly after, our five kids ( ages 3-10) came down so upset because the owner's wife had gone up there and tore down there fort. For absolutely no reason but to be spiteful. She literally took the wood that was formed into a tee-pee and threw them down into a pile on the ground. We paid over $1000 to get away into mountains with our family, where we thought would be secluded...but ended up sharing a trailer house with the owners and our kids treated like trash. They shouldnt rent our the other half of their house if they arent going to let guests use the same area and monitor them. We were respectful, didnt trash the place, watched our kids but it ended up being a terrible experience. I wouldnt recommend anyone going with their family to this place.

Response from Camp Manager, Owner at Camp Rio
Responded 18 Nov 2022
We are responding concerning your disappointing experience during your stay. Unfortunately your remarks are completely, false, libelous and inaccurate in your review. We have since had to revise our park rules and remove this overlook amenity from things to see and do while staying in our park due your families complete disrespect/ disregard for our property not just at the overlook but when you all came onto the owners porch and took materials from our private residence and also burned them without permission. You all also went into the storage bins and removed seats and tools and supplies to “build your fort” and left them laying around with your kids food trash everywhere, while also burning our building supplies without permission. When the kids were supervised by a few men (never saw the children’s mother at all) they were smoking and we smelled weed too, assuming it was these men. The children proceeded to make other fire rings using small rocks closer to the trailer house and underneath and near power poles by uncleared brush. No adults were present when this was going on and we found the mini-fires everywhere left smoking in the middle of a National forest. Furthermore, the fence building was going on at the same time of their stay and we were gathering these logs to take behind the cabin house to build a “coyote fence” which the kids observed us doing the whole time. Again, no adults were present outside anywhere. The logs that we weren’t able to use fell over when we were picking up after you to put them back where they belonged, it was not intentional to destroy the fort, just a matter of timing and coincidence. We understand and agree you should not return, we wish you best on your future adventures. Possibly modeling respect and practicing no trace behind will help you have more positive experiences in the future.

We got a free upgrade from the wall tent to a more private area up around the hill with a teardrop camper, covered outdoor kitchen, fire pit, grill, and a covered trailer that could also sleep 2. It was perfect for outdoor cooking. Staff was very nice. Had wild turkeys and deer migrating by the site in the morning and evenings. A bit of a walk to the restrooms, but they had clean hot showers that were not crowded.

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE CABIN!!! This place was a nightmare. Over priced cheapy dirty lodging ran by a old men frat boys. The cabin was not as listed. It's a SHARED cabin with the owner although listed (and priced) as a private cabin. Listed as family friend yet we got a complaint that our kids noise was excessive from INSIDE of the cabin.
The cabin comes with no view and lots of attitude. Decorated with cheap tacky prints in goodwill frames with price tags on every single one.
The "maintenance guy" came onto the property on our 1st morning to yell at us and treat us like children over the fire pit we used the night before. He came trying to intimidate us, threatening that we are going to be charged for excessive damage, at the very start of our stay. There is NO communication here. No instructions, no checkout or checkin information, nothing. We placed a log on a propane firepit because we were supplied a nearly empty propane tank, and were unaware we could burn a log on it. Again, no information about ANYTHING anywhere inside or out. just an inaccurate map. Once he saw we were recording this, he sped off in his truck yelling "I'm taking away your fire privileges". We spent our Saturday morning cleaning out that firepit with our bare hands, it looked and functioned 10x better than when we arrived. Not my idea of vacationing! So we didn't mess with it the remainder of our 2 days there.
We came for the view and campfire, both we didn't get to experience here. Went to talk to the owner after the maintenance man drama and he could care less and then sat there blaming us for excessive noise from my kids (sorry that you CHOOSE to live in the same cabin you rent), parking in "his driveway" for a few hours last night (again, you chose this life bud), and saying stupid things like, "wheres your realtors license" (huh?!?!).
Biggest waste of money ever. There's a reason there are no pictures. Map advertises the other cabin is private and seperated, NOPE, shared cabin. Pictures are of the "amazing view", aka the owners junky backyard and a crappy doghouse (which we were scolded for turning on the light of). STAY ELSEWHERE, TRUST ME!

We had high hopes for a quiet long weekend in the mountains. Instead we got loud motorcycles with their riders screaming profanities at each other, noisy four wheelers and gas powered golf carts running all day, and dogs barking constantly. We cut our trip short to find a quieter place for the last night of our vacation. Very disappointed.

We had several people coming from different areas to camp here, and the staff was very helpful in locating us together. The bathrooms were clean and large. The central kitchen pavilion was a great meeting place for everyone. There is beautiful nature surrounding you here, and it was quiet and peaceful! They have wi-fi, and I don't go camping to mess with electronics, but it really only worked on the side of the campground nearest the office, which is fine to quickly check weather, but not if you live on the internet. Just get close to the office and you will be fine if this is a concern for you! I will definitely stay here again!
