Detailed Reviews
My husband and I stayed at the Inn at Maple Lawn in Vernon, NJ for one night with my sis-in-law and her husband the w/e before Halloween. The Inn has only two guest rooms and as it turns out we were their last guests of the season, since they close Nov. 1st for the winter. The Inn is decorated in Victoriana with very comfortable furniture throughout, and even though it is a over a century old, the stairs & floors don't creak with every step!
The Innkeeper is a very lovely woman, who is clearly very artistic and she and her husband have a flair for creative whimsy in their decorating style! Who would think that wooden Scrabble tiles and antique rulers would make decorative pieces?!! They have taken all sorts of ordinary items and turned them into lovely decoration for the house! Everywhere you look there is something fanciful to see!
Now, down to business... the house is impeccably kept, clean and shiny and polished. The bedrooms and bath rooms are newly re-done and in perfect condition. One room has the bathroom in the room and the other has the bathroom next door to the bedroom.
Since there are only two guest rooms, if you are there with friends or family, it feels like the house belongs to you! The parlor is comfortable and cozy and the dining room is pleasant with coffee and tea at the ready at all times and, of course, cookies in the afternoon for munching.
We were visiting with friends from the area, and before going out for dinner we had them come over and we had wine and cheese in the dining room. Our Innkeeper brought out wine glasses for us and our guests and chatted with us all about the area, etc. for a bit.
Breakfast in the morning was very casual and simple, although adequate. There were pancakes and bacon if you wanted them, but they were really only OK. But there was fruit and cereal and yogurt, and really - what more do you need?
The Inn's grounds are well-kept with several attractive and colorful birdhouses and feeders at various spots on the grounds. Had it been warmer/drier weather the porch would have been a great place to have had an sunset glass of wine or cup of tea and watch the birds. But, alas, it was cool and damp at the end of October - and big snow was coming!
Over all, it was a lovely stay and we really felt like we took a step back in time - and how lovely it all was!
