It is an ok place to stay if you are not asking for a lot. Staff is not the most helpful. It us very easy access to NYC. Take a bus across the bridge for $2 and take the subway. The rooms are a bit small. Cleanliness ok

memorial day night room was $90+tax (overpriced, but not necessarily for the area) nicer hotels there but you're gonna pay for it due to location. (apparently edgewater and ft lee are "upscale/affluent" towns bordering the border with nyc. i don't see anything special about either but the area is indeed pricy.) the AAA discount is minimal.

the hotel is conveniently (sort of) located right off the GWthough bridge. its old. and dated, and dark inside the rooms but (seemingly) clean. but you know how you get a fresh room with a fresh smell in newer places, this is NOT one of those hotels.
rooms are teeny tiny so if you need space, this is not your place. the bed was comfy enough and I THINK i had a fridge microwave but literally cannot remember. the bathroom is also dated, teeny (and awkwardly configured. the door is so close to the bed its obnoxious to get through) but clean (enough). tv was fine wifi was strong enough to stream. teeny little high window so at least when it was open, people walking past can't TOTALLY see inside do you see this TEENY theme?

i could hear the traffic from the room which was not pleasant but i could judge the traffic congestion there which did tell me when it was NOT a good time to get back on the road. that bunch up there is AWFUL...coming AND going. its motel style with ample parking for front rooms and back rooms (2 floors NOOOOOO elevator)

anyway, the lobby is about the size of a bathroom and has a computer that can be used. though i was asked to get off of it by the hotel manager as he needed to use it? no office desktop or laptop? now granted, i had been on it for a while, but it was the way he asked that kind of annoyed me "are you a guest" (now i just happened to cross the GW bridge, exit I80, to stop by the econolodge to use the lobby computer???) to which i answered "why" (i didn't know this guy from adam) and he said "because i am the hotel manager" so i said "i don't know what that means" and only then did he tell me that he needed to use the computer. weird.

he became a little more congenial after that exchange. even offered me a (free? paid?--he offers "shuttle" services to/from nyc locations at a cost, pricing listed on a sheet posted at the front desk--nice side business it seems you'll want to check how that business is insured if you get into an accident) ride to go retrieve my car in the VW shop up the road. and then revoked it when i asked about timing of the ride because he said he had errands to run out of town. that COULD have been a HUGE snafu but thank goodness the dealership had a shuttle cause i have no idea if taxis run up there and the dealership was a few miles up the road.

the breakfast was all continental, OJ and coffee, not even sure if there was tea, but you can toast waffles at least. there is no where to sit and eat it so you have to take it back to your room.

the area looks sketchier than it is. and there's a pretty tasty but pricey restaurant next store. delicious overpriced food and crummy service but if i have to pick one of the 3, i'll pick the food quality over all else.

the hotel could look quite different inside with a few renovations. its smaller than most hotels so i don't know if or how often they reach capacity. i asked the manger about average pricing and he said it hovers right around what i paid.

I WOULD ONLY STAY HERE IF LOGISTICALLY CONVENIENT OR IN AN "EMERGENCEY" BECAUSE I DO NOT SEE ENOUGH VALUE, GIVEN THE PRICING, IN THE STAY.

Ok this is an older motel, which could use up dating. The staff are friendly, and work hard. The location is great if your looking at bicycling over the George Washington bridge. The hotel is just across the street to the walk path over the bridge. We wanted to bike NYC this time. So we took this hotel, which s extremely budget friendly.

PROS:
1) budget friendly.
2) if your using bridge - perfect location
3) clean rooms
4) stores around the corner - east access
5) access to NYC buses - which we never used.

CONS:
1) TV in room was old and needs to be replaced.
2) bathroom are closet size. If your a large person good luck using the toilet which is up against the sink.
3) always had to go down to get towels. Cleaning staff wash on site. Therefore it's a constant cleaning process for them, not their fault.
4) no face cloths.
5) location looks shady, but never any issues, our vehicle was left a lone, and we walked around at night - no problems.

In conclusion, I would consider returning again. When I travel all of my time is spent outside. This hotel was ok to sleep at night, get up, shower and then split. If you spend time in your hotel go some where else.

The Tollgate is the most disgusting motel I have ever stayed in, only slightly better than the horrible place I stayed at in Cicily. The sheets had blood stains. The floor was littered with cigarette butts. Other unfortunate travellers had scribbled their comments on the wall. It's one of these places where you stay in your clothes to sleep. All in all, it was not bad.

A guy impersonating a cop tried to break into our room. There was no manager, staff did not help. No staff answered phone at front desk during break in. In fact, staff assisted in giving the guy the key to our door after he flashed a fake badge at them! THE STAFF HELPED THE MAN BREAK INTO OUR ROOM at 2AM! He was arrested for impersonating a cop. DO NOT STAY HERE. There is criminal activity at this hotel.

We didn't want to spend the money to stay in New York so we staid here for 3 nights and went to Manhatten every day.. This hotel is great.... The staff was really friendly, the prices were great, and our rooms were really clean. We were simply amazed. There was even high speed internet free. We had everything we needed. I'm definitely coming here again.

i wish i could give 0 stars. This place is the ABSOLUTE WORST. i have been to bad hotels before but this takes the cake. The door to the room does not seal i had cold air bowing on me ALL night. Breakfast is just gross. The people at the desk dont speak english and are SUPER rude. The room smelled like marijuana. I HIGHLY recommend NEVER booking here.

Myself and a friend stayed here due to refusing to pay ridiculous prices to stay in NYC. Fort Lee was recommended by an acquaintance to stay at due to being a short little jaunt from town. It all sounded good in theory. That day, that former acquaintance became a sworn enemy. First things first, we arrived at the hotel at about 2 or 3 in the morning. As i came inside for the rooms keycard, i noticed to my right the "breakfast area", which was a table (no chairs) with some newspapers, magazines, and two cereal dispensers that looked like something you would see in a gerbil cage. i will never again eat Captain Crunch and/or Cocoa Puffs in fear that any individual piece of cereal may have been in those infamous containers at one point in their lives. Needless to say, there was a haphazardly taped sign on the cereal containers that cereal is only available "for breakfast". Darn, i really was jonesing for some cruddy cereal from antiquated canisters. Note sarcasm. Well on to the room. Being a 26 year old male i step in and get excited because we have a huge, decent looking 42ish inch flat screen hdtv. Again, being a male, i begin to rummage through the cupboards for the remote. After 10 or so minutes i gave up and resigned to just turn on the tv old school style and attempt to find some sports to watch. If it wasn't 2 in the morning i would've called and made a big deal about no remote, however, our search for the remote led us to find other things. By things, i mean giant scrapes on the wall in which all the paint was off and it was down to concrete, a giant black paint (i hope it was paint, please tell me it was paint) stain on the covers, the shower was looser than Lindsay Lohan, as simply turning it on or looking at it the wrong way would cause it to shake and quiver and half of the pipe was out of the wall, which probably did not help the cause. The only thing worse than the hotel was the trip we had taken to go to Wal Mart in North Bergen because we were hungry at around 3 or 4. But if i talk about how horrendous that trip was i would get all itchy and nauseous again. When we returned to the hotel we attempted to wash off the stank of North Bergen off of us (we dubbed it "the Berg"), however, the water pressure in above mentioned loose shower felt like 7 or 8 (maybe 9 max) little angels were tickling my back so it did not do a good job of cleansing myself. I slept in my jeans and long sleeve shirt in the hopes that whatever venereal disease residing in the bed did not know how to operate such things as zippers to be able to get to my body. My life changed that day. Do not let your life change. Find another hotel, its really not worth it here. To make matters worse, its not even much cheaper, and then all night you hear the freight train sound of the traffic on the bridge driving by. I always swore when i was a little boy i would never write reviews online because i thought it was a waste of time and what the heck do i care about strangers and where they go. Well this place changed my opinion and opened my mind. Have a great day. Its been about a week since this trip and i am slowly but surely getting better, and my psychologist says that i should be back to normal in a week or so when the manic depressant pills start to kick in. I cannot wait.
