We just returned from a 4 day trip to this hotel. Let's start with the pro's shall we... The hotel is easy to find right off the Garden State Pkwy. Beautiful exterior. Interior quaint/Victorian style. Reception Staff friendly daytime as well as night. Complimentary continental breakfast good variety of bagels, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, waffles, cookies, juice, coffee, tea and wonderful condiments. Also in the breakfast room there are games and great old books to occupy your time. There is a fitness center which unfortunately we did not have time to check out and Great wordy signs placed throughout the hotel. Close to host of beaches i.e. Long Branch, 7 Presidents, Point Plesant etc. Great eats , movies malls etc.
Now, let's move onto the cons...Our first room although supposedly a king size bedroom Room 207 was very small. The rooms are well air-conditioned which can be controlled. Our first room smelled like smoke although this is a smoke free Hotel.
(Our 1st Room Experience)
As we were preparing to lay down we noticed that not only was the bedding dirty we then stripped the bed and noticed that the mattresses were well stained with urine (unacceptable. We tried to turn it over but found the other side was worse. My husband went down to notify the staff who wer apologized and moved us to a bigger room one that had Jacuzzi, a king size canopy bed, leather sofas with leather ottomans a smaller TV & of course air conditioning. Because of the previous experience with the other room we removed the bedding and to our surprise AGAIN the mattresses were stained with urine!! My husband goes back downstairs again to address the issue with the staff and of course they were AGAIN very apologetic. They offered to change us once again but we were so dead tired from traveling we declined and also because the issue was never the ROOM. So, we took as many towels as possible to cover the mattress and remade the bed with new bedding. Sleep was uncomfortable because you just knew that the stain was lurking underneath the clean sheets. The mattress was very lumpy and soft which didn't help in sleeping. Honestly, had that room not been prepaid I would have left.
(2nd Room Experience)
At 2:30 in the morning, my husband had to go down to the reception area to ask for Tylenol. For some reason my eye decided to give me theobbing pain, the eye became bloodshot and swollen thus the reason for hubby going downstairs. When he got there, there was no one at the desk he did run into a Woman who asked him if he saw the receptionist. She wanted to notify her that she had left a note that was face down on her chair. He acknowledged and said if he saw her he would let her know. After a few minutes of waiting he came back upstairs to inform me that there was no one there to ask for Tylenol, 15 minutes later our phone rang, the receptionist informed us that there was complaint from a Woman who was on the first floor stating that we were banging, jumping or doing whatever and it woke her out of a dead sleep we couldn't believe it we are GROWN people empty nesters so we were totally confused by the complaint.
I informed the Receptionist that my husband had just came down for Tylenol but there was no one at the front desk and he was on his way back down to address the complaint. Before he gets back down there, I guess us answering the phone call was a little bit too much because the resident below us actually took their chair and started banging on the ceiling. This resident knew they had done wrong they were already at the desk trying to head off which was now OUR complaint. The minute my husband got down there he overheard this resident speaking about us. My husband recognized that it was the SAME Women who told him about the note. She then started to rand about his shoes, stating that he was wearing boots (he was not, they were leather soft bottom slippers which she clearly saw when he lifted his foot up to accommodate her (and seen by the Receptionist as well). She nicely informed Hubby that he needed to take his the shoes off anyway. The truth is that the hotel is old, has wooden floors and which creek when one walks. The night Recep was wonderful she defended us and actually told her that this is a hotel, that people walk, doors close and people talk. Later, that same Women also complained about another residents talking and finally on the third complaint the night Receptionist informed the Manager and that Resident who was supposedly booked through September, was asked to leave.
It would have been nice if the Manager would have made sure she met with us to apologize on on behalf of what took place, to apologize about the mattresses, credit us for one day. This is her brand and you would want people to be comfortable enough to come back to your hotel but we heard nothing from her.
The hotel is pet-friendly. All dogs stay on the first floor, we ran into one of the dogs (Marco) very sweet and well-behaved but, again I believe because the dogs are allowed to sleep in the beds that either the urine came from dogs or children. Was this the reason why my eye went crazy? I don't know but, whatever the case is, note to the Manager, your housekeeping staff should do a better job of informing you that mattresses need to be replaced, OR made up with waterproof liners on every bed. Housekeeping should be doing a better job making sure bedding is clean.. making sure without asking that all samples are replenished, rolls of toilet papers are replaced and lastly the bathrooms could be scrubbed better... you can clearly see around the bottom of the bathtubs and toilets where dirt has accumulated over a period of time (based on the two rooms we occupied per their moving us)
Please note only 10 pics allowed 1st 8 our 1st room.. last two our 2nd room...
In closing, for the cost of my 4-day stay, I expected a little bit more I don't believe I will be back at this hotel again.
We stayed here two nights, arriving late in the evening. Check-in was quick and uneventful. The room was not as cluttered as many generic hotels. The bathroom was spacious and everything worked; water flow was great, towels plentiful, two lights. Minimal closet space and the room furniture was clunky. The refrigerator was really nice--a full freezer and big refrigerator. Clean, comfortable bed. The decor was clunky but functional--wouldn't take that much to make this place really top notch. Definitely good price performance. Parking is weird but there was enough. Lobby was inn-ish and well done.
Great option for this area of New Jersey. Quaint and historic hotel. Spatious rooms, peaceful surroundings, kind and efficient staff, easy access from the highway. Good breakfast options in a cozy atmosphere. For those of us who travel constantly this place is a welcomed change from the chain hotels which although efficient in providing excellent services are cold, meaning: you wake up and don't know if you are in Missouri, Kansas, North Carolina, etc. because they all look the same (yes, there are outstanding exemptions though). I loved the orange scented toiletries and really didn't "suffer" due to the lack of a coffee machine in the room. There is a self service 24/7 pod coffee machine in the lobby with cookies and all the flavors of coffee you can think of!). Because I am on a business trip I did miss the iron/ironing board in the room, but the WiFi is excellent. Keep in mind that it is located in a countryside kind of area with a tiny stream nearby so there are birds singing, as well as ants, ladybugs, and other insects in the garden, but I really enjoyed sitting on a chair outside, in the garden, able to see the stars and the full moon shining in the sky, feeling the soothing breeze. Probably the building could use some cosmetic TLC, but it really feels like an old homestead, full of stories and good times. The signs with brief wisdom pearls are really enjoyable, I loved the one hanging by the elevator on the first floor. And I really loved the fresh rose they put in the room.
Had to attend a wedding nearby...made a last minute reservation and was pleasantly suprised....if you want super modern and a cold shoulder go to the big chains...if you want quiet. ...nostalgic. ..friendly...then by all means it's a great place....our room was spacious and very clean....could it use some updates. ..maybe but then where would all that nostalgia go?...
Stayed with my sister for one night June 8th on our way to visit friends in Freehold..no complaints at all, our double queen room and all public areas were spotless, everything smelled fresh but not overpowering like others have complained about..room was very large and nicely decorated, even a rose on the bedside table..bathroom was very roomy with ample towels & toiletries, and again, spotless...very quiet, never heard another guest or noise from the street...I agree with some other reviewers that the upstairs hallways were uncomfortably warm, as was our room when we first entered, since the A/C hadn’t been turned on & it was a hot day..I was worried that so small a window unit couldn’t sufficiently cool so large a room, but after just a little while, the room was really cool & very comfortable for sleeping..I would stay here again in a heartbeat..small independent family run hotel, doing a great job & I’ll support them whenever I’m in town
