I found this place linked to website for town of Washington, NH. Took my elderly mom to visit a friend who lives in the country. Seemed ideal since it was very close and mom can't do stairs. Dark unfamiliar roads and windswept rain kept me from leaving to find a better place for our one night stay. First the negative. Room smelled old and musty. Room hadn't been cleaned, everything was covered in dust and bathroom was moldy. Floor sloped down in one corner under ceiling that had water damage. Deadbolt on door didn't work, so I jammed a chair under doorknob for added security. Non-smoking room, but pillows smelled like smoke. Now the positive. TV, heat and hot water worked well, one bed was comfy(one over slanted floor was not). When I expressed my feelings at checkout, owner sincerely apologized and excused conditions for age of property and limited staff. In daylight and better weather on the ride home, I checked out some other places in the same price range that aren't much farther from Washington. I'm bringing mom to area again in June for a wedding, but won't every again stay at 1830 house.

First let me clarify that our first stay at the 1830’s house was from 3/31/2013 – 6/4/2013. Then in July due to the death of a family member we found ourselves heading back up to New Hampshire for a memorial service. Although the 1830’s House was not perfect the first time we were there, as I had stated it was very clean, so we decided to stay there again. We were given the same room, which was sort of nice, because it made us feel more at home. We had mentioned the bed sloped down and that had actually been fixed, which we thought was really great. The main difference on our second stay was the fact that the room was not cleaned daily, nor were we given fresh towels. Now, I don’t mind making our bed each day or cleaning up after ourselves, nor do we really need clean linen each day, but I do like fresh towels. I think we actually got fresh towels once while we were there. Then there was the pizza. When we arrived it was late and we stopped at a local pizza parlor right before they closed and bought a large pizza. Since it was now about 9:45 PM and there was no way we were going to finish a whole pizza, I put the pieces on the paper plates that we got at the restaurant and we put the five remaining pieces in the fridge. Two days later, we went to heat up the leftover pieces and one was missing, and ironically the microwave seemed to have pizza sauce in it. One other plus was there were beautiful new comforters on the beds. If we go back up to New Hampshire we might consider trying the 1830’s house one more time, but I would want a different room, and make it clear that the room needs to be cleaned daily and fresh towels put in the bathroom.

'm a frequent, frugal traveler on a budget typically looking for lodging bargain, always accompanied by Mike, now a gentle old soul of a Chocolate Lab. Recently having been treated terribly by the cheaper chains -- Super 8 and Motel 6 come immediately to mind -- I've been experimenting with paying a bit more in the hopes of having a more peaceful stay.
This property certainly didn't fit my lodging plans, but somehow the hotels along the Merrimack Valley on this date were ridiculously expensive. At $74 before taxes this particular evening, amazingly this appeared to be a real bargain. Besides, I was really tired and the alternative would be to sleep in my car.
All that said, after the owner's blathering instructions about ... EVERYTHING ...and he then saw Mike, my Chocolate Lab ... telling me he "wasn't going to charge me extra because I was a nice person" ... proceeding on with tht tired claptrap narrative about "certain people having bad animal allergies," etc.
SO ... I was moved to the "pet friendly" room -- actually a smoking room that reeked so badly, it literally felt like I was sleeping with a dirty ash tray strapped to my face. It's hard to see the positives of a room that smells so bad that, at that price, may have been competitive but certainly not cheap.
Everything else about the room was okay, though ... IF you accept the fact that the baseboard heat took more than an hour to warm the room and that the fridge was unplugged when I checked in ... including the TV and WiFi, often trouble spots in cheap motels like this one. After some people bumped and banged their way into the room next door around midnight, I was really ready to leave.
Bottom like, if you're desperate for a bed, this place will work ... IF you expectations are low and you're will to shell out nearly $80.

Our daughter was caught in a snowstorm up in the Hillsborough area. Every other hotel, motel, and B & B in the area was either booked or did not care to help. The gentleman at the 1830 gave us a room and also went down and turned the heat on so it would be warm when she arrived. He left the door to her room unlocked and told us to have her go right to the room. He kept an eye out for her and checked on her in the morning. It's good to be able to trust that some people in hospitality still care about others. We will be staying here again!

The last negative review was in 2008, and more recent reviews were complementary so we decided to take a chance. It was late and decided Keene was too far away for the night. That was a decision we lived to regret. We always give mom and pop's a benefit of a doubt and have rarely regretted it. We'll just chalk this mistake up to being too tired to make a wise choice.
The owner was very friendly and that's about the only good I can say. Warning lights should have gone off when the owner could not even light the sign to the motel. Definitely should have known when we were told there was no ice machine but we could buy ice from the local market across the street. Hopefully the sheets were clean - we didn't want to think about it. The carpet looked like it dated to the seventies and was probably last cleaned then. I made the mistake of walking around in my white socks and they were immediately brown on the bottom. And who knows what the carpet was hiding - the floor had mysterious lumps and depressions. Some outlets didn't work. The heat was marginal and we noticed that if we had needed air conditioning, a dirty fan would have to suffice. The wires to the fire detector were disconnected. The bathroom featured peeling paint, stained fixtures, moldy tub, and corroded faucets. Apparently guests are supposed to enjoy rotten egg smell - the water out of the faucets reeked of sulfur so bad that I refused to even brush my teeth.
Fortunately I didn't think to look under the bed until we were leaving to make sure nothing had rolled under there. Apparently a vacuum hasn't rolled under there in years and I was glad I had spent the night not knowing what was accumulated over the eons under us. The next night I took an extra long shower just to feel clean again.
Mom and pops don't need to be perfect - but gosh, at least make an effort.

This is a very comfortable & affordable motel. My wife & I come up to Hillsboro every May for trout fishing. We love to stay at the 1830 House! We've been staying there for 20+ years. Always clean and the host is very friendly & accommodating. Across the side street is the Country Store where you can get a great breakfast/lunch or anything else you may need. The 1830 House is an excellent value!

This is a quintessential roadside motel - not a chain cookie cutter type, but an honest to goodness independant owner. Yes it is a dated decor, but my room has always been clean. The owner John, is pleasant and accomodating. I travel here with a group of friends to an reunion that has been going on since 1950. When I was younger, I packed a tent and sleeping bag, but these days I prefer a bed and a bathroom. I have recomended this hotel to others who attend and all have been completly satisfied with their rooms and have been re-booking every year as well. My only observation would be lighting for the sign - I head back late to the hotel and the roads have no street lights. I have driven past the hotel twice and not known it for serveral minutes. The ages of our group are as young as 2 and go through 72! Some have pulmonary and respitory conditions - no one has had any problems with the condition of the rooms!

Me and my Sister inlaw stayed at the 1830 House Motel on October 2&3 of this year. My Mother had passed away on September 27th... And since we both live in Connecticut and her Service was on October 3rd in Hillsboro,, we rented a room there for those 2 nights.. To be honest we were not pleased with the room at all !!! But under the circumstances we bit our tongues... Come to find out we were just informed that the manager charged us for 3 nights instead of 2 !!!! I could go on and on about the FILTH in our room!!! John the manager should be ashamed of himself for charging us for 3 nights!!! Which we refuse to pay!!! We give this Hotel the lowest rating possible !!!

Myself and several business colleagues stayed at this motel while working in Hillsbourough. It was an efficiency motel. The rooms were clean and service was friendly. Nothing more , nothing less.
