I have stayed at the Sugarloaf Mountain Inn many times. It is a small, quaint family run hotel at the end of C St. The prices are reasonable and comparable to the other establishments in the area. It is conveniently located within a short walk from downtown and two doors down from a Mexican restaurant, which I have reviewed separately. There is an on-site convenience store, which is where the check-in counter is. The store carries regular and adult beverages, snacks and other miscellaneous items you may have forgotten or needed in your travels. There is no icemaker on site; however, there is ice available in an icebox located in the store in convenient grab bags for guests to take. The pros of staying here are by far the friendly staff. Heather, who checked me in and operated the shop during my stay, was so helpful and kind. I also met two women that tended to the rooms who were very friendly. I had my pup with me, who I bring with me on my travels and everyone here was accommodating and welcoming. I stayed in room 11 on this visit, which was a first for me, as I am usually traveling with someone and get the double room, which is number 5. Room 11 was recently updated I was told and while it is a small room, I typically am only sleeping there, so it did not bother me. The bathroom is larger than expected and the newly installed shower and tiles were a lovely update. The room had a smart TV, microwave and refrigerator. If you want coffee, bring your own, I knew this ahead of time, so that is what I did. They may have it in the shop in the morning, but the shop does not open until 8 am and I am an early riser. Parking is available in the front of your room and if for some reason the lot is full, there is parking on the street. If you have a dog, you will need to walk across the street to the empty lot to let them relieve themselves. Thank you Heather and staff for making my stay so comfortable. I am sorry my pup chewed up the roll of toilet paper, lol. I will be staying with you all again on my next visit.…
This is a nicely cared for motel in a terrific location. All the fun of the Virginia City boardwalk is a short stroll away. There's a little market on-site open until 8 PM for munchies, wine, soft drinks, fresh fruit, and other items. Heather enthusiastically shared what to do with my one day in town. I'm sure she has to tell people the same thing over and over, so I appreciated her patience and helpfulness. Cafe del Rio, a great Mexican restaurant, is a few doors down. Note its historic building. Get the famous gospel fried chicken.
Oh my gosh! This is the greatest little Inn that I've stayed at. They make you feel at home and treat you like family. Candace and Heather are the BEST ❤ The room was nice, the store on site was fully stocked and to make it even better, it's just a short stroll into town. Can't wait for our visit to the Sugarloaf Mountain Inn.
I guess I didn't know what to expect staying in a motel in Virginia City. I know there are no chain hotels in VC. I read all the reviews (and just re-read them to see if I missed something) regarding this motel and don't understand how it got so many 5 stars. For me, it was 2-3 stars. First the good. I was able to check in early, as my room was ready. The owner who checked me in was super nice. There was a binder in the room that had menus and info about the area. I thought that was a nice touch (for me, it's about the little things). The location is great. It is within walking distance to town and there is a restaurant very close by. The things I didn't like about this motel (the little things). The source of heat is a radiator type plug in heater. The room was really cold and it took a long time for the heater to heat the room. I actually had to close the bathroom door to get the room to warm up but then the bathroom was freezing. But once it got hot, it got really hot so then I had to turn the heater down, but then it got cold during the night. It was tricky to keep a good temperature that wasn't too hot or too cold. When I first walked into the room, I noticed that both bedspreads had holes in them (more than one hole which led me to not have a great first impression). The shower head was removable but the shower arm was so long that when you stood under the water stream, you hit your back against the wall. It was very tricky taking a shower. The shower arm was way long and it didn't need to be. There was also only one garbage can in the room. We stayed for two nights so this was not ideal for us (but the owner did tell me when I checked in if I needed anything to let her know so I'm sure the garbage would have been emptied if I asked). I know the motel cannot control this but there were people talking outside the door after midnight and then again before 7 am. I could hear the people next door talking in their rooms and the people outside woke up both my daughter and me several times. My daughter and I actually thought about checking out after the first night and moving onto Carson City. However, we decided to stay because I didn't want to have to pay for a night I didn't use. I have never stayed in a small historic town like this before so maybe I was just expecting too much from a family-owned motel in an area like this.…
We visited Thanksgiving week, 2020 on a poignant mission to scatter ashes, four in our group, We had two cozy rooms, 2 beloved dogs. I was charmed by the appropriate cotton, embroidered bed covers. No polyester, static-y bedding. Our rooms were clean & quiet. The hosts were attentive & caring. It was freezing in November but the oil radiator heaters keep the rooms cozy, It takes a bit for them to heat up but they're very warm. Small rooms, but who travels to stay in a room? We even managed to find good food when everything was SO deserted--not tourist season & Stupid Covid. To top it off, one in our party left a beloved wool beanie that belonged to her Dad. Candace (from Sugarloaf) kindly mailed it to Detroit for us! I'm not sure that would happen in a huge, corporate hotel. Thanks for taking good care of us & our dogs.…
I stayed for a night and upon check in inquired if the "doll room" was available and I was in luck. It's one of three historic rooms they have. It's located in the back of the building, kind of dark, kind of creepy. No ghostly activity to report asides from some footsteps outside late at night, but those might have been other guests. I didn't peek outside to find out. This motel is located on the south end of town so a small walk from all of the downtown hubbub.
I traveled to Virginia City to spend a day on the Railroad and to explore the history of the area. The Sugarloaf Mountain Motel was a great place to stay. Right on the main street, only a few blocks from everything. Walking distance even to the Virginia City Railroad. The outside look of the motel was the classic motor hotel of the late 50s-early 60. The view of Sugarloaf mountain and the valley behind it is just a step out the door of your room. The room I stayed in had been recently updated/remodeled. Everything was new, fresh, clean. The bed....... I slept like a log, didn't want to get out of it in the morning. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Able to answer any questions I had about the historical town. The office is also a little store with all sorts of snacks, drinks, etc. If I hadn't had to move on for a job the next morning I would have stayed at least another day, maybe two. I haven't written a review in a few years but... this trip/stay deserves one. One of my favorite trips in the last few years and I plan to stay again soon. Two thumbs up for the Sugarloaf Mountain Motel. P.S. they are in the process of remodeling the rooms, one by one. Rooms 10&11 are new, 2-9 are more the classic interior.…
We only stayed for one night but it was clean, comfortable, and in a great location too. Handy little shop next door with free coffee, which was a nice touch. If I came back to Virginia City I would stay here again.
If you are going to stay in Virginia City, Sugarloaf is a must! Rooms are small. but very clean and comfortable. The owners are amazing, very helpful with restaurants and things to see and do info. And so very friendly and welcoming. Walking distance to main street. Fresh coffee served at 7am , and they offer a small convenience store in the office.
This fine establishment is a great representation of what the flavor of Virginia City is all about. What most people are looking for in a fairly remote area is a place that is clean and comfortable. The Sugarloaf Mountain Motel checks both of the boxes quite nicely. The rooms are small but more than adequate, and the cleanliness of the rooms and the comfort of the bed exceeded expectations. The owners, Charles, (call him Charlie), and Candace were delightful hosts. They take the time to chat with you and are sincere about asking questions about yourself and your travels. On this particular evening we purchased two rooms as walk ins at a rate of $85 per night per room. Well worth the money. And the little mini-mart that they run as part of the property definitely comes in handy as most food establishments in Virginia City close very early. No doubt I would stay here again. Thank you Charlie and Candace for making us feel welcome!…
