Detailed Reviews
We love love loved our afternoon at Lochmara. It was so much more than expected and we are a bit bewildered by what we got to experience here today. We paid the extra $20 for the underwater experience and absolutely do this it’s worth every cent. We loved getting to hand feed the stingrays, getting up close and personal with the fish, shags and seals! This was before we even went into the underwater area. Amazing to watch the fish and seals interact from under the surface. We watch the animal feedings and then had a nice lunch in the restaurant before kayaking and stand up paddle boarding the afternoon away. Would definitely want to stay here next time we are in the area and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants an amazing day out. I think value for money wise this is the best value of anything we have seen on our South Island holiday.

After having stayed at the Lodge twice about 15 years ago, we only went for a day trip with our kids this time, aged 10 and 15. The activities and the setting were still awesome and the staff very friendly. We booked the day trip package for about $200 and also added the underwater observatory which was so well worth it. However, we felt the place was so busy with daytrippers that we would think twice to stay there now, especially in summer holidays. Basically a couple of hundred people arrived on a couple of boats at lunchtime, restaurant took ages but also the loungers all got taken over, the water toys taken and all the activities had about 50 people joining. So for the over $200 one pays to stay, I wouldn't want to have this crowd. The restaurant food was nice enough but took ages and people fighting over tables, chairs and bean bags. Bathrooms were a mess already on arrival. Boat ride was great but every single seat taken. The art on sale was very cool. Happy to go again but not in school holidays I think.

We both had a Wonderful 4 nights stay at Lochmara lodge☺️❤ All staff were friendly, professional and accommodating. The meals were consistently very tasty and presentable. I recommend the Duck, so moist and the apple sauce tasted like apple cake! The Oysters were delicious too! My partner loved the fish as it melted in his mouth, and he wasnt even into fish! Now he is!! 😊 There were so many things to see and do. I loved feeding the stingrays and watching the seal splash around. I enjoyed patting Floyed the dog and feeding the kakareki birds. We tried paddle boarding for the first time which was cool and kayaking was fun too! We enjoyed a relaxing massage and had a romantic bath in the tree house. We walked the Queens Charlotte and took some Amazings pics! It was sunny and hot the whole time. We also meet other lovely visitors there. The whole place is so quirky and you can see and feel the passion and love that has been put into this place over the 20 years❤ I'm looking forward to going back and recommending Lochmara lodge to all my friends and family. We feel relaxed, refreshed and energized for the rest of 2020, Bring it on!!!☺️😎❤

+1
We were on a Cruise ship and booked a 3.5 hour trip to Lochmara lodge. It was not long enough to do everything we wanted. You can book direct on the docks at their store front.
The stingrays did not cooperate for the feeding.
The paddle boarding and kayaking took most of our time. Be aware there is no one to help lift the kayaks and paddle boards, so help a neighbour.
Nice spot on the grass for a Corona or two while watching people paddle board and kayak.
We would go back !

Fifteen of us descended upon Lochmara to celebrate 3 birthdays, and celebrate we certainly did, Pick ups and drop offs were varied, but all were timely and check ins were well organised and welcoming.Without exception, the staff were friendly, efficient and helpful, especially at booking time, when our numbers kept increasing. We enjoyed delicious food at the restaurant, made use of the kayaks, visited the underwater observatory and animals and took advantage of the many walks. It was a very special four days in beautiful surroundings.

From the moment we moored our boat and were taken to shore we were treated to outstanding hospitality. We had only planned on lunch but stayed and did all the lodge had to offer the kids loved feeding the stingrays and kakariki. Loved being able to use the kayaks and paddle boards. Staff were friendly. Will definitely be back.

Highlights were the friendly service, fantastic dinner at the restaurant, a luxurious soak in the private bathhouse and learning about various wildlife from the knowledgeable and passionate staff. Only slight let down was the tiny heater in our room was just not enough to keep us warm on the cold October nights we stayed. The fire at the restaurant warmed us up nicely though!

Lochmara Lodge is a beautiful lodge with stunning grounds. Our “Indulgent Night for Two” package included a beautiful room with a balcony and water view (well worth it) and reserved time in the Bath House. The bath was luxurious and relaxing. The restaurant is competitive and the food very, very good. Owners Chris and Nicki are very present and hospitable and staff members Jess, Liam and Bo were all terrific. In the Picton office where you pick-up the water shuttle, Paula is the best!

We only stayed for one night. Free use of paddle boards and kayaks is great. Lots of other things to discover like the underwater observatory or nice little walks in the forest. Many hammocks around the whole area to relax. Quality of food could be upgraded but otherwise we had an amazing time there.

Only the 2 bedroom unit was available when we booked in May for end December. It sleeps 5. However, the queen bed is in the living area, taking up most of the area, leaving only room for two arm chairs. The other room is a tiny dark room with bunks and one single bed.
Their was a kitchen, which did not have any glasses, you had to use mugs. There were plates and bowls, but nothing to use if you wanted to cook in the microwave. No teatowel either.
There was an outdoor table with plastic chairs.
There was no air conditioning.
And no privacy.
We felt the aim was to use the restaurant.
These units are right by the restaurant and outdoor seating for the restaurants, mainly used by day visitors from Picton. It is very popular with families, and noisy.
There is also the noise from the motorboats, jet skis, etc. Definitely not a tranquil spot, even when you went further away where the hamnock areas are.
Defintely underwhelmed us.
