We arrived early prior to the appointed 4pm check in time. We walked in and shortly were greeted by the owner/host Nick in his paint clothes as he was working on the trim in the peak of the 3 story gable. He has transformed this property himself about 16 years ago. That is a long time for a B&B host to own a property. The average in Wisconsin is about 5 years. He has a lot of himself in the nicely appointed facility. We were allowed to occupy the Barrister Suite we had reserved as it was ready. Unfortunately, only 2 of the 5 rooms have in room baths - an important factor in my choice. At the supposed hospitality hour, we asked Suze (a college student hostess) where the wine etc. was. She said it appeared no one was interested so got nothing out. (how do you look interested in nothing?) She pulled out a couple of carafes of wine from within and on top of the fridge and a couple of glasses and told us to make ourselves at home. No hors-d'oevers offered. We had no idea where to dine and there was no one around after Suze left to ask. You do have run of the house - two computers with internet access as well as wired and wireless access for your laptop. The next day we did get a couple of snacks after special request about the hors-d'oevers. Shaded off street parking is nice. Breakfast was different each morning and sufficient. We stay in B&B's regularly. I have never stayed in one where I felt so much at home even though there was a lack of a host or hostess much of the time.

The Barrister B & B, which used to be a residence for the diocese of Helena, is a lovely, relaxing place. We took over the house for a small, family reunion, complete with dog who had the run of the house. Breakfasts, prepared by Nick, are both healthy and tasty. His sister LeAnn does most everything else, and does it well. The place is spotless. The first floor has several small hideaway rooms, a wonderful porch, where we spent a lot of time, and the usual parlors. The Victorian decor may be a bit much for some, but isn't that the point? Check out the phone both in the front hall.

For those with accessibility issues, take note: The entrance is up several stairs, and all the bedrooms are on the second floor. However, if you can navigate this, it's a perfect spot, right across from the cathedral, from which you can hear the organist and choir practicing and the hymn-singing during mass. Pretty cool.

PS--I always take off points for accessibility issues, so don't be put off.

This was my first time staying in a B&B. Until now, I thought I was more of a Hilton or Hyatt type. We stayed here in part because of a family wedding reception that was to be held on premisis. After about 24 hours of relaxed comfort, I would say that I might have to re-think being a Hilton or Hyatt kind of guy. The atmosphere and morning breakfast really add to the great personality of the Inn. Nick and his sister run the place with pride, care, and attention to details.

Great wedding reception site for 150, great food and company, great rest and relaxation. Don't forget to stop downtown at the farmers market and shops. Great pottery artisans and local personalities.

When I arrived, Nobody answered the door. I walked around downtown, then came back an hour later. The owner, Nick, said he didn't hear the door. We had to ask for wine and snacks; which are advertised. Our bed did not have linens. I'm not sure if it had been cleaned. It took an hour to find someone to get linens. I think the owner left then came back. The breakfast was better than the room.
I am not a B&B expert, but I've been to about 10 across the country. This is worst one I've been to.

Wonderful old house that is well kept. Innkeepers seemed nice, but there was no breakfast either of the days we stayed. The first evening we came in late and left the slip on the room door indicating the time we were going to be there for breakfast--7:30. No one there, we had to leave to a business meeting. Next morning, same thing, kitchen was dark. Innkeeper showed up and offered us coffee as we were leaving. No apologies, no mention of breakfast. Definitely the most disappointing food experience I have ever had at a bed and breakfast.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 5 pm, which was right in the middle of what we thought was supposed to be the "wine and hors d'oeuvres". After letting ourselves in the opened screen door, we poked around the silent downstairs a bit to try and figure out how to check in. We finally went back outside to ring the doorbell, waited 5 minutes, called the Inn's phone line, waited 5 minutes, and then rang the doorbell again. One of the owners (Nick's sister, Leanne) finally came downstairs to check us in and told us we should have rung the doorbell to get service immediately. What?? Anyway, we were shown to our room (the Lilac Room) and the owner offered to bring us glasses of red or white wine - saying they weren't doing the wine reception because several people were checking in. She brought a very nice silver tray with our requested glasses and a bowl of mixed nuts. The room was very nice looking, and the bathroom across the hall was nice, with a claw tub/shower.

Sleeping was a little difficult, due to the heat in our room. The air conditioning is in the hallway and they keep the window above the door cracked open. But even lying sprawled on the bed with the fan on full and a window open, we were too hot to fall asleep for over an hour.

Breakfast was good; we had huckleberry pancakes, bacon, and fruit. You specify what time you would like to eat the night before, within a range of 7:30-9 (ish), and your places at the table are set for you when you come down. We enjoyed talking some with another gentleman coincidentally also from our local neighborhood (in Arizona). But it's not a specified breakfast time at the big table, as I was originally thinking from other reviews, so be prepared to have people coming and going from the table.

We left with a poor impression of the inn because we were basically made to feel that we had overstayed our welcome. The Lilac Room is just across the (narrow) hall from the washer/dryer. A young man was cleaning the linens and, at 10:30 AM, knocked on our door to ask if we were staying on for another night. It was pretty clear he was wanting to clean our room if we weren't staying a second night, so we rushed to pack up our things and left the Inn. We were never told a check-out time, nor did we feel 10:30 was overly late for us to be relaxing in our room. It was just a bad way for us to leave, after waiting so long at check-in and having difficulty falling asleep. Let's hope this was just a one-off experience for them.

The Barrister B&B is truly one of the most beautiful and well run B&B's I have ever stayed in. It is located next to a beautiful historic church on a quite street. Our breakfast was delicious each morning. Every afternoon they hosted a wine and cheese get together. The guests would sit on the big wrap around porch and visit while sipping wine and enjoying the fantastic Montana summer weather.
The Inn keepers are very accomodating. They were very helpful in planning our outings in Montana and very knowledgeable about the area and all it has to offer. I highly reccomend this B&B in Helena. You will never stay anywhere else in Helena!

We loved the Barrister Bed & Breakfast! Our room was perfect. Clean, calm and very comfortable. Nick and Beth are amazing hosts. The house is historic and offers large common areas. We also loved the amazing breakfast. The only bad thing was that we stayed there for only 1 night. We would definitely stay there again!

Got a call July 27 " er...umm just kinda checking that we were staying with them" and something about integration of their reservations calendars. I advised I would check the specifics if our visit (reserved 5 MONTHS earlier, did so,and, as agreed, Presuming all was good since what they had jibes at my end, I did not call back as there was issue. Seven days later we were called to advise there was a "mess up" and that they could not accommodate us at all. They gave a phone reference to another B&B which was supposed to have a room available . We called that B&B but NO return call. Finally we just gave up and booked into a local motel. Dissapointed. They offered a free stay next time we are back which won'y be anytime in the forseeable or distant future.

We don't very often stop in B&Bs, because they make us feel constrained when we are traveling. We chose this one because it was one of the few highly rated places to stay near downtown Helena, and we are glad that we did. Each room has its own striking style, and the common areas are gorgeous. From the veranda or back porch, where the host offers breakfast (and wine and cheese in the late afternoon), one looks across at the cathedral. In short, a very, very beautiful place to stay. Plus, the owner, Nick, is a native of Helena and a fountain of knowledge about the city, including its seamier sides, things that don't show up in the guidebooks. We had a blast talking with him. The people who work with him were extremely warm and welcoming. We would love to stay here again.
