I live out here in Paradise Valley, and had often wondered about the Querencia Kennel sign I passed between Emigrant and Livingston. Then I went to a local fundraiser and in a silent auction, won some training sessions with Joe Skaggs, who runs the kennels. Wow. I have trained and showed dogs in professional competitions, and after meeting Joe, with his intuitive understanding of dogs, am taking my new Golden Retriever pup in many new directions. Joe can be gruff, letting you know what an jerk your dog was in the first five minutes, but wait it out - he will then tell you every smart thing your dog did, showing you videos of what your dog did that day, how beautiful he/she is, what characteristics your dog exhibits that he suggests you pursue. And come on, admit it, all of our dogs can be jerk especially confronted with a 5 acre parcel to run, 5 energetic well behaved and obedient Labradors to share it with, ponds, pastures, the Yellowstone River.... I send Yankee now for play dates once a week now, and at the end of the day I come back to a tired, happy, better behaved dog. Whether or not you ask him for training during the day, Joe can't help it - he isolates them out and works with them. Yankee is SO much better a dog than he was before Joe! The kennels are securely fenced, double or triple gated, so I do not worry about security. I am planning a wedding and my family are all dog lovers, so will be sending most of them to his lodging facility and bringing their dogs with them, to be boarded during the day with Joe. The only down side is that at the end of day, I pull up all happily anticipating my dog's delight that I came BACK ... and he doesn't leave Joe's side. The dog ends up loving Joe more than me. He is firm but full of affection and happy encouragement to the dog. I am so grateful I got this opportunity to work with Joe. And I have been there on several occasions that owners have returned to pick up their dogs - happy, panting, healthy, energetic, healthy. If you want your dog to stay inside and sleep all day and be full of pent up energy when you get back, don't go to Joe - when you want your dog to run with other well-behaved dogs all da, strictly supervised, out in the pastures and pond and river, running and swimming and being patted on the head for being such a good boy/girl, and exhausted and happy and glad to see you .. albeit maybe a little smelly from so much swimming~ ... go see Joe. Especially if you want to go to Yellowstone or Paradise Valley or something nearby for a few days, you are giving your dog his/her version of Disneyland to have him/her go stay at Querencia Kennels. One other thing I love about Joe - he has a career as a dog trainer, yet works with many nonprofit pet shelters in Montana, and takes in troubled dogs - I've seen him work with a nasty biting older dog, complaining every minute, but then you hear the story and Joe is rescuing this dog and trying to make him into a companion animal - he may be berating the dog but he's devoting his life to helping ALL dogs. And I think that is special. He is tough but fair .... and Yankee, my very expensive foo-foo sleeping-in-the-bed Golden, is becoming a well behaved, perhaps championship show/obedience/field dog under Joe's guidance. He also trains dogs for the TSA, bomb sniffing dogs ... super obedient, but without their spirits broken. Gentle but firm, demanding but affectionate. Like I said .. any better referral than the fact that the dog likes him better than you at the end of the day .,,, or week? Highly recommended.

We wanted to include our dog, Milo, in our vacation plans to Yellowstone, but also realized it's next to impossible to have a dog along while touring the park. We were so glad to have found Querencia Kennels, to help us accomplish both! Milo stayed with us for our first and last nights of camping, and for 4 nights with Joe at Querencia. When we picked him up, it was obvious that he had a great time with Joe and the other dogs. This is a great place if you're looking for a way to bring your dog with you and enjoy the sights of Yellowstone. We highly recommend Joe and his kennel facility. He really knows and loves dogs, which put us at ease, given this was the first time we boarded our dog!

This could be a great place. The location and setting are incredible. Unfortunately, Querencia did not live up to the website's promise.

BE WARNED there is a dog kennel on the property. Lots and lots of barking at all hours.
Quiet? Peaceful? Relaxing? NO.
And we are dog lovers.

Though architecturally interesting, the building is very noisy - we could hear every whisper and fart from the other rooms. While we were trying to sleep, some of the other guests in the common room used our bathroom! (we stayed in the Beartooth "suite" which has saloon door between the common area & our bathroom, but a solid door to our bedroom)
Folks were up carousing in the common room until after 10 pm and we heard everything since they were only 6 feet away through thin walls.

There was no hot water in the much-needed shower.

PROS:
The deck of our room was great for relaxing and viewing the Paradise valley and surrounding mountains. The Yellowstone river was a quick walk away. The setting is unbeatable.

FULL DISCLOSURE:
We were reserved for 2 nights, but decided to skedaddle outta there the first morning. Being awakened before dawn by the barking made it easy to leave early after a lukewarm shower. We found a fun cabin at Chico Hot Springs down the road.
A letter to Querencia's owner failed to generate a satisfactory response. The owner refused to believe most of our comments and complaints. He accused us of blackmail for posting on Tripadvisor and called us liars for complaining that no bikes were available for our use as promised.
He did apologize for no hot water, however, and admitted to being one of the late carousers.

For full disclosure, we did not pay (in cash) for our miserable night's stay. We were supposed to settle up with the owner, but he was absent that day. There was no breakfast, so Querencia was only out for the laundry.

This could be a fabulous place, but our stay was exceedingly disappointing.

We stayed here before heading into Yellowstone for a couple days - though it would also be a nice "home base" if you can't get lodging in the Park since it's only 40 miles from the entrance. The rooms are well furnished with a nice common area and kitchen.

Even better was the dog boarding - Joe is a very knowledgable trainer, and our dog Huli had a blast playing with his other dogs (Joe had the GPS tracks to prove it!), running around on acres of land in Paradise Valley and swimming in the Yellowstone River.

We are so glad we ended up staying here, meeting Joe, and boarding our dog overnight (if you want to experience Yellowstone to it's fullest, do not bring your dog - board him here and you will both have a much netter time!)

My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights with our dog. Couldn't have been happier with our stay. The bedroom and bathroom were comfortable and clean. The kitchen was a dream for cooking and has everything you could possibly need. Joe also gave us a great recommendation for dining in the area. We were able to easily leave our dog in the kennel when we went to Yellowstone for the day. Anyone traveling to Yellowstone with their dogs should consider staying here and using the Querencia kennels. The view will not disappoint.

We had originally planned to bring our dog to Yellowstone but as I'm sure you've read, that is not a fun way to enjoy the park. So plan B- dog sitters. But that was becoming a logistical nightmare. So plan C - kennel. Querencia kennels fit the bill! Joe was very accommodating and worked with our scheduling needs. Our girl is a bit of a nervous Nellie and prone to bolt, but he took good care of her and made sure she got the exercise she needed.
Querencia kennels saved our trip, and we couldn't be more grateful. Thanks again Joe.

A wonderful kennel- great place to board a dog while visiting Yellowstone. Joe, the proprietor is wonderful to work with. Our dog had a great time, both indoors and outdoors. We definitely would board here again, and would love to try the B and B!

Querencia kennels was fun for our dog to run and play out in the open spaces. Joe was nice, knowledgeable and accommodating. We boarded for 3 nights. Would definitely recommend and would use again if we come through this area next time. Although we didn't go in the lodge, it looks like a really nice place to stay as well.

We boarded our two yellow labs (1 year old and 6 year old) at Querencia Kennels for three nights while we did Yellowstone park. All we can say is that these two city dogs had the vacation of their lives. Living outside and gamboling in the fields and ponds of Querencia with the other dogs, including Joe's. What a great place. If they could speak we are sure that they would ask that we take them back to Querencia again. And Joe is just great with the dogs. Stew and Sharon W.
