Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Recently stayed at the cabin for a week. Could not have had a more peaceful stay. Everything was perfect and the cabin has everything you need and it is spotless. Thank you Mary Ellen and Heidi for having such a nice place to stay.

This is a gorgeous B&B in the Paradise Valley, about 40 minutes north of the entrance to Yellowstone. The house has three large B&B rooms, all with en-suite and very nicely decorated. We stayed in the rainbow room, which has a jet tub and a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. The breakfast is superb and served in front of an equally superb view. Highly recommended if you want peace and quiet in Montana!

My husband and I were on a long road trip around the western states - it was the conclusion of a road trip we began a number of years ago. We had hoped to do it about five years ago and had booked the cabin then but had to cancel when health problems intervened.

A family wedding in Northern California enabled us to rearrange the trip in May/June 2017 and we contacted Mary Ellen once more to book. We were so glad we did. The views are wonderful and the cabin has everything you might want for a self catering holiday without fuss. We stayed five nights and went into Yellowstone on three days driving the length and breadth of the park with its amazing landscapes - so varied.

Mary Ellen is a wonderful host and as helpful as anyone could wish. Her knowledge of the local area is prodigious and she was very helpful to my husband in booking a surprise dinner in a local restaurant to celebrate my 70th birthday which took place in Emigrant (she also left a lovely bouquet of flowers and card on the table to wish me a Happy Birthday - really so very kind and thoughtful of her)

We really recommend Johnstad's - the cabin is great and I am sure the B and Bs will be too as Mary Ellen's standards are very high. We recommend her to anyone looking for comfort, peace and quiet in a convenient location for visiting Yellowstone and the surrounding area which is beautiful.

Could not have asked for a better place to stay while exploring Montana/Yellowstone. Both the house and the room I was staying in were immaculate and waking up to Heidi's cooking every day was an absolute treat. Their family has lived in the area for decades and knows everything there is to know about the region (geography, history, things to do) and is more than happy to share that information with you.

Being close to Yellowstone Park, Livingston, and Bozeman makes it the perfect headquarters for exploring the surrounding area. You also can't beat the stunning view of the Absaroka Mountains right in their backyard. Speaking of the backyard, their house is located right on the Yellowstone River and it's just a quick 5 minute walk to some of the best fishing the river has to offer. I had some slow days fishing in Yellowstone Park but those days were quickly forgotten when I would walk through the Johnstad's backyard down to the river and hook fish after fish until it got too dark to tie on my flies anymore. I have nothing but good things to say about this place and I hope I will be back soon!

This B&B is wonderful! Mary-Ellen, and daughter Heidi, were such gracious and attentive hosts during my husband and my stay. Conveniently located near Yellowstone, we drove 2 days into the park and came home to a tranquil, picturesque room. We had access to a private, larger living area with a fridge for food and drink as well as a coffee and tea bar with a Keurig. Mary-Ellen provided cream and sugar and even to-go cups for us each morning as we set out to Yellowstone. Our last morning there we enjoyed a wonderfully cooked breakfast overlooking the mountain. We felt more comfortable and at home here than any other places we have recently stayed. This is truly a B&B worth visiting and if you do visit, be sure to ask Mary-Ellen about all her travels too - great conversation to be had!

My wife and I stayed for two nites in the Rainbow Room. Beautiful, quiet, modern, functional, comfortable. Mary Ellen and Heidi could not have been more accommodating or gracious, helpfully answering every question and request, and even anticipating our needs such as towels for Chico Hot Springs. Delicious, generous breakfasts, served family style upstairs in lovely living room / dining area. The other guests were friendly, kind, and intelligent. Magnificent view of the mountains outside our front door. Far from the congestion of Gardiner, easy 30 minute-drive from Yellowstone. All for a price less than the touristy places.

We stayed in the log cabin rather than the B&B proper so we can't speak to the accommodations or the breakfast in the latter. Instead, we prepared our own meals but otherwise our stay was quite pleasant. The cabin was very comfortable and well appointed. The setting was fabulous.
We could sit in the living room facing the Absaroka Range in the distance with deer wandering by and eagles soaring in the foreground. A beautiful sight and a lovely stay indeed.
