The Dude Rancher Lodge is an historic downtown Billings hotel. We are proud to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which is America’s official list of important properties that provide a valuable link to the past and have been deemed worthy of preservation. Built in 1949, our hotel near downtown Billings is a rustic ranch that features weeping brick mortar and full-length porches. Our interior is designed with knotty pine paneling, custom-built western-style furnishings, decorative lampshades and carpeting that is adorned with the brands of local ranchers who originally invested in the property.

I had not stayed at the Dude Rancher for probably six years but I returned because it is so much more affordable now than other downtown hotels. I stayed four nights over Thanksgiving so occupancy seemed light, but I found it much as before – I got a smallish, basic room that was clean, comfortable, quiet, and safe. I slept very well, after requesting an extra blanket, and I enjoyed excellent water pressure in the shower. The front desk staff really impressed me with their genuine warmth and hospitality. I loved the short walk to both Billings hospitals and to downtown bars and restaurants. The in-room coffee maker made delicious dark coffee. The Dude Rancher is a solid option well-located and loaded with Montana charm.
I will stay again.

My wife and I were staying one night in billings before our early morning flight the next morning. So we went with the cheapest place we could find that we thought wouldn't be awful. The Dude Rancher was very unique but really nice. I got nervous with the dingy-ish stairs and hallway, but the rooms were surprisingly nice and comfortable. Seriously, I've stayed at $500/night hotels in major cities with beds not as comfortable as these. The rooms were very clean and charming. We couldn't stay for breakfast, but if I was staying in Billings again I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

My husband and I were passing through Billings, and I wanted lodging that reflected the west and was not one of a chain. After looking at reviews, I chose the Dude Rancher.

Check-in was smooth and fast (I had booked through an app).

Our room had a lot of personality, and had plenty of room, even though it was smaller than modern hotel/motels. It was exceptionally clean.

The bed was comfortable and pillows were good.

I appreciated the touch of real mugs and glasses versus paper and plastic.

Fridge was cold and clean.

The air conditioning wasn’t the best, but Todd, assured me that they are doing their best to get it working at a more optimum level.

The postcard in the room stated that it was nostalgic and had the feel of an inn, which I agree. It is not your steel and glass establishment and I appreciated that—thank you Todd.

When we checked in, the rate we were told we would be charge was higher than the rate the room was booked for online. Hotel staff agreed to a rate of $80.00 per night which was less than the rate initially booked online and this was copacetic. Although interior of the hotel was somewhat rustic in its design and did have some character, the carpeting everywhere we looked was stained and dirty. In our room (#212), there was a smell reminiscent of human urine. We also found the the A/C did not work well and that there was a dearth of electrical outlets to accommodate electronic devices in need of being charged. Upon bringing this issue of the room odor to staff, we were given another room (#216). Although there was still a slight odor in the new room, the A/C didn't work appreciably better and there were still insufficient outlets, we decided to stay in the room as the intensity of the objectionable odor was less noticeable (but not absent) than the previous room. We cannot recommend this hotel to others.

Stayed here for a night on my way from MN to WA. When I got there in the evening after having driven 11+ hours, hotel staff told me that their AC got busted the night before, and it wasn't just my room but the ENITRE hotel. The staff I talked to was very nice, feeling bad about us guests and was trying to address the issue as well as she could handle as someone who (she said) just started working there a couple of weeks ago. I got an extra fan from her just to barely survive the 87F temp until it got cooled down past midnight.

And as if the broken AC wasn't enough, when I got to my room I found out that everything was unplugged for some reason, including the fridge, which had mildew smell that made me feel like the room hadn't been used for a while. And to make things even worse, the room didn't have enough outlet to keep everything "on". For example, I had to unplug the fridge to plug in the microwave (and vice versa). Such a design failure...

The owner and/or the general manager of the hotel should've stepped up to deal with the broken AC situation instead of putting everything on the staff's shoulders. They could've given us a significant discount to stay there w/out AC, or if they wanted us to find somewhere else w/ working AC, they should've helped us to find a place with a comparable price (which was just impossible at 8pm).

Staff was very nice and tried to help me/us as I said, and I understand that a problem happens. However, the way in which they dealt with the issue was very disappointing.

This place is older and has a lot of character. If you’re picky and want nice and new you won’t be happy. I gave 5 stars because the staff were real people with nice attitudes. Todd the Mgr called to alert of an employee who was tested with COVID and wanted to know if we wanted to find a different place and he would help. I declined his offer and we continued with the reservation. There haven’t been much updating in the past 20+ years but the brand carpet was interesting as well as the thick roped stair handrail. The restaurant was open and Dana served us breakfast along with good conversation and great tips on places for our travel. I’m not gonna tell you about my socks, just that it was quaint and people were nice. If you’re picky and expect too much, don’t go there.

First off, the front desk clerk was from outter space and while I was waiting to be checked in, a guest came in to complain that the bed hasn't been made from the last guest. The clerk didn't apologize as if it was a daily occurrence.

Get to my room and there are people smoking everywhere outside.... Then I walk in and everything in there smells like it did outside! Everything inside is over 20 years old and you just get the immediate feeling of an old stale fart the second you open the door...

The toilet has not been cleaned since they installed the AC system which is probably 20 years old! The AC doesn't work, so I called the front desk after removing yellow gunk holding down the hangup button only to get the same stellar representative who said these words....

"I checked the basement and there are no fans available and that I could leave if I wanted"

This place is a damn nightmare!

I have never written such a direct and honest review BUT I need to warn you. I wanted to like this hotel. I love old historical hotels. This one is at least old and not in a good way. It is clean but dirty...what I mean is that the room was clean but shows years of stains and use. Walking down the hall there was a smell I couldnt figure out. The carpet throughout the facility is stained A LOT. The front staff was a mix of very nice and AWFUL. Several times I over heard the staff complaining about other staff. The site says breakfast for $5 and on Sat morning at 8:30am I went to have breakfast and it was closed. The front desk didn't know why and didn't care. They are doing some construction outside and I can only hope they will gut the inside! I will say the bed was great and sheets and towels were clean and there was plenty of hot water. I almost changed hotels but I considered it a challenge and survived but wont try it again. Oh the location is great but that doesn't make up for the rest. The pictures posted are not a true reflection of the property

Be forewarned - the room and experience is not like the photo. Those must be after Hotel Impossible was here 10 years ago. Our room’s a/c did not work and at least we were given a fan (this evidently is not a new problem). Coffee was not available in lobby like promised and the clerk said it was due to short staff. Breakfast was not available but would be coming (7 am when asked). Could not get a receipt cause it was Expedia’s policy to email them (no it’s not). Room needs remodeling especially as there is not enough electrical outlets.
Yes the room was clean but small.

Very clean, friendly staff, comfortable beds. Rooms are a bit dated but in a charming way. My favorite was enjoying my morning coffee from a glass coffee cup instead of the normal tiny paper cups! Only negative was the parking. (Just a bit crowded and tight)
