We just returned from a conference in Big Sky. Several co-workers and I stayed in Big Horn 32 and found it to be perfect. It was clean and had everything we needed to cook a few meals. It wasn’t fancy, the furniture is a little dated but my bed was comfortable, which is most important to me. The location is great, it’s only about a 5 min walk to the conference center and there’s a Pomo lift literally across the street. We were there for the snow, the conference, and to hang out with each other and it met all those needs perfectly. I would definitely stay there again.

Six of us (two couples, 2 singles) stayed in Unit #44, which is a 3 BR, 3 Bath condo during a week-long ski trip to Big Sky. It was not deluxe accommodations but it was good value and comfortable (for 4 out of the 6 of us). I would rate this as a 3.5 property.

Pros:

1. The condo provides easy access to the slopes via the Black Bear Poma lift which is a very short walk from the condo. The Poma lift starts running at 9 am and takes less than 2 minutes to ride. From there, it is a quick ski run down to the base area. All in all, we could make it from our front door to the base area in less than 10 minutes. The Poma lift stops running at 2:30 pm. To get back to the condos, take the Silver Knife trail. On days when the roads were not plowed, we could ski all the way down, over the road, to our front door! (Just keep an eye out for road traffic.)
2. The main living area of the condo was large enough to accommodate 6 people without us feeling like we were tripping over each other. There was a nice, large dining table that could easily accommodate 8 people.
3. In addition to the TV in the living area, each BR also had a TV.
4. Each BR had an en suite bath. Big plus!
5. There is a nice mudroom/entryway to the condo, with nooks for everyone to store their gear (helmets, goggles, gloves, boots). Big plus!
6. This is an attached one-car garage for ski storage.
7. Toiletries are provided along with a blow dryer. While the room is only cleaned once during a 7 night stay, there were additional towels in the vanity.
8. There is a full size washer and dryer and laundry detergent is provided.
9. A fully equipped kitchen (including tea kettle) is provided.
10. Free wi-fi is available in the condo. When I called the Big Sky Resorts, I was told the Big Horn units did not have wi-fi. So I was pleasantly surprised. this amenity is dependent on the owner.
11. TVs were hooked up to DirecTV.

Cons:
1. The Big Horn condos are a little more isolated than the Huntley Hotel or Summit Hotel. We had to walk about 5 minutes to get to the base village (for dining/shopping). The rest of our ski group (60+ skiers) stayed at the Huntley Hotel so we felt a little isolated from them. But we had more room and the convenience of a kitchen at our disposal.
2. The 3rd BR in our unit was geared toward children. It was a small room with bunk beds. The two single males were too tall for the beds but managed. There is a sleeper sofa in the living room, but neither guy felt it would be any more comfortable. When reserving a condo, be sure to inquire about the bedding. We erroneously assumed that the 3rd BR would contain twin adult beds.
3. We ended up with the master BR which was quite large and comfortable. There is a nice walk-in closet too in that BR. Only drawback was that there were only 4 hangers in the closet so it seemed like a little bit of a tease to have that large closet. The guys in the small BR were cramped with limited space for their clothing.
4. This unit does not have a hot tub.
5. The unit was a little dated but, that said, it was comfortable.
6. If you want to ski home, you have to be able to ski a blue trail called Silver Knife. A true beginner would have difficulty. But such a skier, I believe, could ski down to the base area and then call for a free shuttle to take them to the condo.

I didn't get a chance to check out the hotel rooms at either the Huntley or Summit. Both lobbies looked nice. I got the impression that the Huntley rooms may be a little dated (but a nice breakfast buffet, so I was told, is included in the price.) It looked like the Summit was newer and had a better location with true ski-in, ski-out. Between the Big Horn Condos and the base village, we walked past other condos that looked newer and more upscale. But I couldn't see the names of those condos.

Other notes:

On our day-off from skiing, we went to the nordic center, called Lone Range Mountain, is one bus-stop away, maybe 10 minutes. (Shuttle bus is free and runs every hour or two). You can get the bus schedule from the concierge at the Huntley.) It is a very nice facility with over 50 miles of groomed trails. It is a historic dude ranch and has a nice dining room in addition to ski rental shop. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. It costs $20 for a trail pass and $20 to rent skis. They also will take people into Yellowstone for cross-country skiing. Had I known this ahead of time, I would have signed up for such a trip.

There is a nice little two-screen movie theatre in the Town Center which is a couple of bus stops from the resort, maybe a 20 minute drive. You are allowed to take beer into the theatre. In the Town Center, there are a couple of outfitter stores, a couple of art galleries and a handful of restaurants.

Finally, I will end with my observations about skiing at Big Sky. This was my second visit. It is a wonderful mountain for skiing. Lots of terrain and no lift lines. Very easy to maneuver and you are never more than 10 minutes from the Base Village (unlike Vail when you get into the back bowls and need more than an hour to get back to the base.) During this trip, the weather was good (no arctic air) though the mountain could have used a little more snow. If the apres-ski scene is important to you, then Big Sky may not be quite right for you. But, for skiing, it really is a great destination.

We had plenty of space for our family of 8 in the 3 bedroom 3 bath condo. The price was right, the condo was clean and everything was in working order. We all enjoyed a good night's sleep in the comfortable beds.

The first night, we missed having an air conditioner; the bedrooms on the second floor were warm. We quickly learned to keep the bedroom doors open and allow for cross ventilation. I would definitely stay there again when vacationing in Big Sky, Montana. Everything you need is in the resort area. We really enjoyed spending time there!

We stayed in unit 21. It is well stocked with everything you could need. Three bedrooms and can sleep 10 or so with all the bunk beds. It was comfortable. Had a garage, fireplace, full kitchen, and in a good location. It is an easy walk to the base where the lifts are or you can take a pull lift pretty much across the street from the community. Would highly recommend for multi generational families so everyone can come back and forth when they want

We have stayed at several different condos here over the past 27 years and this one was perfect for our current needs. (Have stayed at Huntley, Shoshone, The Lodge.). When we had kids, it was nice to be directly ski in/ski out and have a pool. Now it’s nice to have a comfy spot, full kitchen and quiet.

We stayed in Big Horn #5. I booked thru Big Sky Central Reservations in order to get the lift tix discounts. I then called a couple days in advance hoping I could get insight on which condo we would be staying in, having read some poor reviews. They said they wouldn't know which unit it would be until we arrived. Got there to find that the unit was well-equipped with a VCR, cassette-tape player, 1 19-inch tv, and NO INTERNET access. Sorry, but in this day and age, I shouldn't have to confirm with the reservation desk whether a unit has internet access. Not having the ability to check e-mail is a deal-breaker when it comes to vacation lodging. And asking adults and pre-teens to share one tv for 4 to 5 days completely ruins the non-skiing hours of a vacation. I did call the desk that first night asking to be moved to a different location, but they claimed they had no available units. We love Big Sky for the skiing, but I will no longer book thru Central Reservations. I assumed they would enforce some level of standards on their condo units, but that apparently is not the case.

We just checked in a Big Horn Condo's and it is a disaster. This unit should not be in a rental pool for any Resort Company. This is absolutely the worst unit I have ever rented in my vacationing life. Furniture is old and the beds are still spring mattresses that are really old.

I stayed here for a Medical Conference with my family and rented 3 bedroom unit.
Pros: Great location to conference center; spacious 3 bedroom condo with 3 full bathrooms; one car garage that will fit any vehicle smaller than midsize vehicle; full kitchen; Great price at $215/day plus tax.
Cons: Elevation is almost 8000ft so prepare for that and possibility of Altitude Sickness. See your doctor for prevention; security is poor, we had kids throwing a baseball and hit our car, security did nothing about it; Rooms in need of maintenance, blinds were torn down and condos from across the way could see unobstructed into our living room; lastly housekeeping is a joke, unit was filthy!
Only reason I upgraded to 3 stars was the amenities for the price, so plan accordingly!

Came to Big Sky for the first time in late July. We're from Colorado and have a ski condo here, and have rented units all over the western states. This was the worst! On the good side, it was spacious enough for my large family, but the positives ended there. The garage door didn't work. The dishwasher and washing machines sounded like they were being pushed down a flight of stairs. The plumbing fixtures were falling off the wall, as were the baseboards and trim. The heaters had melted the linoleum flooring in the bathrooms. There was an adequate size deck in the back, but not a speck of furniture on it... not even a grill! Totally unusable.

To top it all off, when we booked the unit, we were promised linen service every other day, but during our stay, they changed the policy to every 4 days and didn't tell anybody- not even the front desk staff! 6 kids on vacation have a hard time going 4 days between fresh towels!

In summary, we LOVED Big Sky, but wouldn't recommend Bighorn, or ANY Big Sky Lodging property. If the resort is going to put their name on the reservation, they should stand up for the quality of the unit.

The skiing part of our vacation was great, but the return home to the condo each day was a serious dissappointment. Like many other reviewers, we found that our condo had not been updated in about 20 years. More importantly, so many things were broken, like the garage door, the fireplace screen, the coffee table, the latch on the back door. In addition, there were big rips and stains in the bedding, and the blanket draped over the couch was in tatters. The couch cushions were so old that they would collapse into the seat when you were sitting on it. In addition, our unit did not have WIFI, which is crazy for 2012. Some of the surrounding units did, which made it even more irritating. I paid $4,000 for a 7 night stay, which was really an insult given the condition of the condo. The owner should be embarrassed.

Hi Linda, Great question. There are grills at some Big Horn's but not all. It really just depends on the owners. Your best bet is to call Big Sky Central Reservations because they will know what specific unit you are in and if that unit has a grill. And yes all units are right next to the slopes. Reservations: 800-548-4486. Thank you! -Anna
