I feel almost conflicted writing this review as I want to keep this place my little secret but it is too good to not share. We stayed here for 5 nights for our wedding so our expectations were already high. However Ed and his team went above and beyond our wildest dreams and created magic for us at this paradise on earth.

The highlights:
EVERYTHING! The resort has newly renovated impeccably clean and tastefully decorated rooms with breathtaking views from every balcony. Everywhere you look is picture perfect rain or shine.

The pizzas at the well stocked Boat Shed bar are so delicious made with super fresh local ingredients, you can really taste the difference!

After eating at some very highly rated restaurants around the world Punga Coves is right up there with the best of them and hands down one with the most stunning view.

The lowlights:
Eventually we had to leave, but are already planning our next trip back!!

Our second night on the QCT track and we booked a Basecamp Ensuite Room (Double Bed) for 120 NZD. The kitchen, living room, dining room and deck was shared with 3 other bedrooms in the house. We had an ensuite Bathroom., though I don't think all the bedrooms in the house did. The kitchen was fully equipped with stove, toaster, fridge, coffee-maker etc.
The views from the deck were stunning overlooking the Punga Cove, and as our Room (12) was located up on the hill, furthest away from the reception, it had a birds eye view and also is the closest to the QCT track if you're continuing on to the Torea Saddle the next day.
The room was very spacious and clean, bathroom was spotless and bed very comfortable. Maybe the only negative was that the wall heater did little to warm up the entire room sufficiently on a cold ,windy night.
We even tried out the hot pool, which is free for guests to use, and pool towels are provided at the reception. Wifi is available only near the reception and the restaurant though you maybe lucky if you get it all the way up to your room. There is no mobile reception.
We didn't get a chance to try the restaurant on this occasion, though it looks like they do get busy quite fast and would be a good idea to book a table earlier in the day for dinner.
The reception was very helpful when we arrived, and even organised some food we left over at our previous accommodation to be ferried over later that afternoon. The Punga cove resort is well signposted along the QCT track while you make your way from Endeavour inlet, so you won't miss it.

Hi gregoryf779, thanks so much for your amazing review. We're delighted that you had a great time at Punga Cove and enjoyed the Basecamp ensuite room, which is popular for hikers on the Queen Charlotte Track - and yes it has great views! We're very pleased to hear that you found the facilities in the kitchen useful and that your room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. We will take your feedback about the heater on board - thank you for bringing that to our attention. It's great that your supplies could be delivered to Punga Cove and that our receptionists were able to help. As you mention, the Punga Fern Restaurant is popular and does get busy, so we always encourage guests to book ahead to avoid disappointment. We're working hard on improving the Wi-Fi signal at Punga Cove, but in the meantime hope that the remoteness of our beautiful location allowed you to escape the online world for a bit. There is, as you mention, no mobile reception in many parts of the outer Marlborough Sounds, but we do have a landline phone at the resort. Thank you again for your great feedback, and we hope you'll be back soon.

You can’t beat the views at Punga Cove - they are exceptional and out of this world.

The resort itself is on a steep hill, so make sure you are still fit from hiking as you’ll be going up and down a fair bit between sea, pool, accommodation and restaurant.

The restaurant was … a bit of both worlds: on one hand, the food was exceptional and really nice. On the other hand, the service/price/dress code of waiters made it feel like you were in a beach cafe. On average you will pay $45 for a main dish and that’s without your veggies or potatoes. One waitress (she was lovely and very friendly) was literally in running shorts whilst serving. The menu is limited (approx 4-5 main courses) and was the one and only menu in the whole resort when we stayed. When you have lunch, dinner and lunch again, you seem to put the “repeat” button on. For the kids it was even worse as they only had 3 choices (fish and chips, chips and nuggets and pasta napolitana top of my head) with no veggies in sight unless you took it as a side platter. Breakfast was average - sourdough with egg is literally that: 2 tiny toasts of sourdough with 1 poached egg at $14.

The kids enjoyed the paddle boards and kayaks. Pool was dated (incl broken tiles, non maintained garden bed, 1 broken stool and only 2 sun loungers for the whole resort) and didn’t appeal. The hot tub was ok although it was a bit grotty (probably sweat/suncream from other guests?).

Furneaux Lodge is from the same chain and although the views are spectacular at Punga, it felt Punga tried to be something they were not (high priced yet I still can not see why except for the views).

Furneaux Lodge felt more authentic, true to what they are (more reasonably priced for accommodation and food, cleaner hot tub). For families, I would recommend Furneaux Lodge and Lochmara above Punga.

Accommodation was superb, we stayed in the Fern Suites, there was absolutely nothing to fault, exceptionally clean and modern.
The restaurant however was disappointing. The menu was horribly overpriced and quite frankly shall we say taking the piss. $19 for a few tablespoons of canned Sweetcorn heated in a fry pan and a spoonful of mayo on top as an entree was insulting to anyone sitting down to eat, (was burnt, and so the chef did refund the charge). $34 for a piece of salmon and few tablespoons of mushed peas. Sides were necessary to any main to have an actual meal, so another $9 for some potatoes and a further $12 for Broccoli (5 pieces). # Pizzas are Available from the boat shed, that we would recommend in preference.

There are two spas onsite for guests also that while are amazing after a long walk are in desperate need of some fresh water!

Hi SpiderMonkey31, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience at Punga Cove. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay in one of our Fern Suites, which have just been refurbished. However, we’re so sorry to hear your dining experience at our Punga Fern Restaurant was disappointing during your stay and didn’t represent value for money for you. Our focus is on fresh, local produce, prepared and presented at its very best, and we endeavour to achieve this at both our smart casual Punga Fern Restaurant and our relaxed, lower priced, waterside dining Boatshed Café & Bar. We’re using your feedback to ensure we deliver a better value cuisine experience more consistently in the future. The spa pools are currently cleaned twice daily, however, with 40-50 people using it each day, they may show signs of discolouration between cleaning times. We agree that a consistently high level of cleanliness should be a given – even during our busiest months – so thanks for bringing this to our attention, we’re making it a priority to check this out further. Since taking over as owners of Punga Cove, we are working hard to make the resort a fantastic experience for every single guest – your feedback is helping us to do that. We really hope to see you back, for an improved experience at Punga Cove.

We stayed in a Two Bedroom unit with the most amazing view, the apartment was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and the staff very friendly and most helpful, the whole experience from start to finish was 10 out of 10, Cannot wait to return... to the team who were there, you were all faultless and it was most apparent you loved your location and job. Well Done and keep up your great service.

This place is an absolute paradise. Gorgeous views from every angle and great amenities including two restaurants, kayaking and paddle board gear, pool and hot spas. The wedding we attended was seamless and all the staff were wonderful and friendly. Staff also helped with contacting other services (eg the local ferry) to help us out. We stayed in one of the A-frames, a comfortable one bedroom plus bathroom space with direct views of the sounds from the bed. Highly recommend.

We went there on a day trip on a mixed day. There are lots of activities that can be done even if you don't stay there and it is a lovely drive and much more affordable than a boat trip. However, our day was rainy so lots of people just hung around the place and kept staff busy. And the daytrippers added to that. Not sure if I would want to share the place with heaps off people coming off the boat a few times a day and keeping the beach and kayaks and pool and spa etc all busy. the kayaks weren't cheap so we gave them a miss in that weather. Spa was luke-warm but ok after a walk on the track. Unfortunately a bit too far for our kids to walk longer than an hour. But would be a great place to stay, ideally out of peak season and if you are not too picky as accommodation looked a bit dated.

Hi Jana, thank you for your review, and for driving out to visit us on a rainy day. We hope you enjoyed the Marlborough Sounds scenery in spite of the weather. We are sorry the spa was not at its optimum temperature but glad it was pleasant after walking a section of the track. We have recently updated much of our accommodation to offer contemporary, stylish and family-friendly options, and find that even in the busiest season, our guests find plenty of secluded spots to relax and get away from it all on our spacious hillside location. We hope to welcome you back in future, on a sunnier day.

A shorter walk on Queen Charlotte Track from Furneaux Lodge and you arrive in a beautiful bay with lodge spread across the hill side. This was a great location, but some steep paths to get between suites and other facilities.
We had the suite at the very top (#20) and it had a lounge area and kitchen with views, king bedroom and a large bathroom. The place was very clean.

The dinner at the restaurant was nice, but same with Furneaux Lodge. They have a captive market and for what you pay in lodgings and price for meals I would expect more.

In the morning we were told that there was only one egg per person due to the egg shortage in NZ (this is not Punta Coves fault or is it a logistics issue they have). The insult was they charged us for a breakfast meal as if we still received two eggs on the plate.

Overall nice accommodation along Queen Charlotte Track.

I recently stayed at the beautiful Punga Cove for four nights, and had the most relaxing time. The views from the room (and from everywhere else) were stunning, the staff were all incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the location is secluded and unspoilt.

Having never been to this part of New Zealand before, I now can’t wait to come back.

This was our first overnight stay in the Marlborough Sounds and it met all of or requirements for a place to chill and rest. We liked unit number 10 that was spacious with a fabulous view. Dinners were good but at times we had to order a starter to fill us up. The mixed, green salad for $8 was good value that we shared as the servings were a little small. The restaurant service was ***** or a 10 out of 10, ie excellent all of the way. Pizza didn't have much to it. If you want a pizza with little or no toppings and a hard, crusty base then you may like this pizza but the pizza was disappointing. While we understand that the swimming pool and spa are scheduled for an upgrade...both of these really need it. Proximity to the Queen Charlotte Track was definitely a plus. We enjoyed the 12.5 walk to Furneaux Resort and the 15k walk up to Eatwells Lookout. Of the two resorts, Punga Cove is superior to Furneaux that has a rather dark, negative energy to the entire place, although the fish 'n chips were yummy. We wish Jason success in forming a team that espouses his ethos of looking after clients with a caring attitude. Taline, who manages the restaurant, was the brightest star of the entire team there.

Hi Larry & David, Thank you so much for your review and appreciate the kind words. Talin particularly loved your banter. I apologise that our pool enclosure was in the middle of a much needed upgrade but it is looking much prettier as we ready for a busy summer. I'm surprised that the pizzas were not too your taste but appreciate your comments, they are a hand rolled base so definitely on the crispy side of bases. I look forward to seeing you both again soon, Jason

Hi Mary-Anne. We were warned there could be wasps on the Queen Charlotte Track but we actually saw very few - may depend on the time of year. Don’t recall any wasps at this Resort though, it’s a magical peaceful place well worth staying at.

Hi yes it’s great, can’t tell you about rooms as we camped next door. Do go and see the glow worms between Punga and Camp Bay at night. Just along the path by the sea. It’s not cheap but is was great quality. The kids will love the pet goat, he’s only a a few weeks old at the moment.
