Like most people we stayed at the Furneaux lodge while hiking the Queen Charlotte track. After a long day's walk it was an amazing place to stay.

We were in one of the new cabins / rooms away from the main resort. The views across the water were to die for and the cabin was surrounded by bushland and extremely quiet. It felt like our own little retreat.

The room was very spacious and included a separate sitting room and small kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities and a bar fridge.

The decor was lovely with prints by a New Zealand artist on the walls and everything was sparkling clean. Quality amenities were also included.

The main building houses a restaurant, and a bar area with a pool table if you want to have a drink before dinner. There are also outside tables overlooking the water which would be lovely on a warm night.

There isn't any wi-fi in the rooms (there is in the main building) but you don't go on a hike to spend all day on the net so it's not an issue.

Service in both the hotel and the restaurant was friendly and helpful.

If you are hiking they will happily pack you a lunch to take with you for $25 which includes more than enough provisions for lunch and snacks for a hungry hiker.

It's not the cheapest hotel we've stayed at, but the location and rooms definitely make it worth the price.

Hi indulgentexperiences, your review and feedback is amazing, thanks so much. We’re thrilled you had a great time at Furneaux Lodge, that you were pleased with your room and the food, and that the service was of a high standard. We are pleased the lack of Wi-Fi here during your visit enabled you to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounds, but please do be reassured that we're working hard on improving the Wi-Fi signal. We look forward to welcoming you back to Furneaux Lodge soon.

We arrived by boat, stayed two nights in a Cooks Cottage, which was perfect - clean and cosy with a small kitchen, a large deck looking out across the bay, and two bedrooms with comfortable beds. The bar was happy to supply wine with an ice bucket and glasses to take back to the cottage for complete relaxation in the afternoon sun. It's the ideal spot to walk a section of the Queen Charlotte Track, or just to relax and unwind. There is minimal cellphone coverage, wifi at the office area only, and no TV in the rooms, so you can get away from all the drama, or hang out in the bar and restaurant with other guests, have a delicious meal in the restaurant, or go out kayaking or paddleboarding.

On our first night on the QCT, we stayed at the beautiful Furneaux Lodge. Accessible only by Boat or the QCT walking track, this lodge sits close to the head of the Endeavour Inlet.
We booked the Hiker's Double cabin for 100 NZD, however due to some renovations happening at the time, we were upgraded to the Cooks Cottages. These had an Ensuite Bathroom and Kitchen, with 2 bedrooms. A pleasant surprise in an idyllic setting. Our big bags transferred by ferry, were kept at the door to our room when we arrived. Bags are left at the same place the following morning before leaving.
The interior of the cabin is cozy and clean with a comfy bed & hot showers. The room was warm, even though the heat pump was in the living room. Coffee and Hot chocolate were provided as well as a bottle of milk in the fridge.
We went down to the restaurant for dinner, by the reception, tried out the Mussels and Fish of the day. Considering the remoteness of the lodge and the quantity and quality, I would say the food is reasonably priced and very tasty.
The wharf is a great place to watch the sunset/ sunrise. Additionally ,There are kayaks to use and a hot pool for guests free of charge.
Would definitely recommend this lodge on the first day of the track or even if you're doing a trip via the ferry. The Lodge is well signposted from the track and hard to miss as a result.

Furneaux Lodge is still the same wonderful setting in a wonderful location at the head of Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds. The staff are still young, friendly and helpful but unfortunately the new owners have decided to charge 5 star prices for what is barely a 3 star facility. We were charged NZ$370 a night for a double and had to pay $95 each for a ferry (I understand the ferry company is under the same ownership) to take us out to the Lodge from Picton and back again so the two nights cost $930. Furneaux Lodge is still the same as it was, a bit basic, no television, no radio, very poor internet coverage, no swimming pool, a great place but just not worth that sort of money.
The standard of housekeeping was rough, outside furniture dirty, dirty ashtrays lying around, fridge on arrival was leaking water as there had been a power cut.

Hi Thecyclist25000, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience at Furneaux Lodge. While we’re pleased to hear our staff delivered great standards of hospitality and service, we’re sorry to hear that your visit didn’t represent value for money for you. Our aim is to deliver an incredible unique experience in the remote outer Marlborough Sounds, and we’re working hard with the team to make every guest’s experience a fantastic one that exceeds their expectations. We’ve taken onboard your comments and will use these to help improve going forward. Guest comfort is a high priority for the lodge, and we agree that a consistently high level of cleanliness should be a given – even during our busiest months. We’re working hard on improving this, and are also continuing to undergo a maintenance upgrade throughout the lodge. We do have Wi-Fi in the restaurant/bar area currently and we're working hard on improving the signal across the property. In the meantime we hope that our remote location and beautiful surrounds provide our guests with an escape from the digital world. We really hope to see you back, to experience the improved Furneaux Lodge.

Disappointed. Had great memories of a number of visits. The price for the hiker huts is too much for what's delivered. Curtains on doors were mouldy. Rooms smelt. Beds need boards under all mattresses as they sink. Im now aware Furneau is revamping this as has had problems with flooding etc. Suggest a common room as rooms very small and a suitable kichenette for the 4 huts to utilise. Also, with the sometimes rain deluges that packs be put from the boat to a shelter and then in the rooms or at least kept dry somewhere please. Dining service was slow. We had to ask for waitress and ask to find someone so we could pay our bill...the girl behind the bar didnt know how to use the till she said and ignored us until we asked for attention. Oh well. We dont usually have adverse comments and are l Furneaux do, We think, have future plans.

Rode the boat from Picton for a two night stay. Nice rooms with good views of the bay. Nice service at the bar and the restaurant food was excellent. The room was not serviced (replenish soap in shower, freshen towels, make the bed, replace used glassware), even after we asked for service at front desk.

Fortunately, we had just missed a large wedding at the property, which would have made a quiet stay into a zoo.

We had a hiker cabin which we expected would be a little rough; It was very expensive too. It was rough, small and mildewy. Not as bad as the shared toilet which had one dark, dirty shower. After biking all day, both of us opted to go without a shower vs using these really bad facilities. There was no option between these cabins at about $150 and a suite for about $350. Regular hotel scale accommodation is sorely missing. A little upkeeping is in order too. Restaurant and bar were nice; staff were very friendly and helpful.

As we walked of the Queens Charlotte Track (QCT) we arrive at what I could say was a beautiful spot for lodgings. But it kind of stops there. We were third in line to check in and waited 30 minutes before our turn. As recommended by the receptionist. She booked a reservation in the restaurant for that night. The suit we had was clean, large, comfortable with views across the garden and bay, so no complaints there.

Went to use the spa, but the water was colder than the stream out of the hills. It was more like an ice bath with bubble. Which was great for tied legs.

Went to the restaurant for dinner. No reservation for us in the system, so we were asked to sit in the lounge area next to the pool table where there were a pile of kids playing. Not place to have dinner so we found a table outside under the veranda and watch the rain come and go across the sounds. Our server arrived and then said no oysters, no mussels, no cob loaf tonight. We ordered from the remaining choices. The food was okay at best.

Before we start the next walk of QCT we grabbed some breakfast. Our server said no bacon. So we ordered smashed avocado on toast with eggs. After 40 minutes and chasing the server to locate our breakfast it arrived. Not sure that 1/4 of an avocado is smashed avo on toast. Grabbed our pack lunch and was off for the day.

I know times are tough with staff shortages and tourist coming back to places. But I can not see why a 4 star hotel has not got its business model together. Everything on the menu should be there. Checking in shouldn’t make you wait more than 30 minutes and not to have our reservations in the restaurant. Just a bit of care on the smaller things will go a long way to make peoples experience better.

Rooms were clean and tidy, beds were very comfy (had the best nights sleep). Staff were all really nice, food was great and well priced considering the location. We were evacuated due to the tsunami warning and the staff had carried chilli bins of food and drink up to the top of the hill for everyone and had blankets spread out so it turned into one giant picnic - awesome!!

booked cooks cottage weeks in advance.
We arrived and the outside of the cabin had peeling paint, doors didnt open and shut properly. Doors had chipped paint, shower flooded. It wasnt a good first impression. We had a tiny deck with two chairs for the four of us. This seemed really weird. The cabin was two bedroom with two king beds but not enough outdoor furniture. Yet the couple in a large cottage next to us had a huge deck with outdoor table and chairs and reclining chairs. We felt a bit neglected.
Furneaux was missed the vibe and atmosphere. it was flat. Staff just werent warm and welcoming. Asking for things like cooked oysters, rather than raw oysters was met with a no “we are too busy”. we were the only ones booked for early dinner was i dont think too busy was the reason, rather than “how dare a guess inconveniences us”.

The beds were really comfortable. But for $500 a night the rest of the cottage was not maintained and i wouldnt stay here again.
In contrast the sister property, punga was warm and welcoming and helpful and I would definitely recommend it for great pimms, food and a friendly welcome.
