Lovely location best enjoyed from old homestead verandah. Inside decor tired. Nice enough rooms lack privacy or place to put wet gear. Charges of $8 each for poured juice and coffee seemed extortionate. Eggs Benedict good but another $30.

Upon our arrival we were given a lovely lodge (quite new) but with lots of construction taking place right in front (they are building new staff quarters). After mentioning this to reception we were moved to a 2 bedroom lodge - which was older but at least quiet - where we stayed the night. For the money paid, I must say accommodations are very, very basic and pretty dated. However its all about location which is hard to beat in Marlborough Sounds. The arrangements between Punga Cove (same owners) so that luggage can be moved between the two properties is an added value so that guests can walk between the 2 hotels which is a real experience. Breakfast and dinner in the hotel were both excellent and once again, it's all about the setting of this hotel.

Dear Valued Guest Thanks for taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback. We apologise the construction was not finished and this impacted your stay. We did have some really bad weather weeks which impacted the barges and completion dates quiet dramatically. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the meals and service and location. We sincerely hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the sounds and we look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future. Regards Furneaux Lodge Team

As we walked of the Queens Charlotte Track (QCT) we arrive at what I could say was a beautiful spot for lodgings. But it kind of stops there. We were third in line to check in and waited 30 minutes before our turn. As recommended by the receptionist. She booked a reservation in the restaurant for that night. The suit we had was clean, large, comfortable with views across the garden and bay, so no complaints there.

Went to use the spa, but the water was colder than the stream out of the hills. It was more like an ice bath with bubble. Which was great for tied legs.

Went to the restaurant for dinner. No reservation for us in the system, so we were asked to sit in the lounge area next to the pool table where there were a pile of kids playing. Not place to have dinner so we found a table outside under the veranda and watch the rain come and go across the sounds. Our server arrived and then said no oysters, no mussels, no cob loaf tonight. We ordered from the remaining choices. The food was okay at best.

Before we start the next walk of QCT we grabbed some breakfast. Our server said no bacon. So we ordered smashed avocado on toast with eggs. After 40 minutes and chasing the server to locate our breakfast it arrived. Not sure that 1/4 of an avocado is smashed avo on toast. Grabbed our pack lunch and was off for the day.

I know times are tough with staff shortages and tourist coming back to places. But I can not see why a 4 star hotel has not got its business model together. Everything on the menu should be there. Checking in shouldn’t make you wait more than 30 minutes and not to have our reservations in the restaurant. Just a bit of care on the smaller things will go a long way to make peoples experience better.

Many, many years since I visited Furneaux Lodge. What a treat to find it still such a tranquil, beautiful place. We were walking the Queen Charlotte track and got completely soaked alllllll day on the first leg. We so very kindly got upgraded from the hiker's hut to a suite which made the world of difference since we could dry everything out over night, it really made our trip. Dinner was hearty and generous (burgers) and we loved a soak in the hot tub and entertainment from the hardcase local wekas, it was all quite magical. Very kind and helpful staff, top marks all round - thank you so much.

We stayed at Furneaux Lodge while walking the Queen Charlotte Track in February, 2024. After hiking the ~10 miles on the first day through a symphony of cicadas and outstanding views, feeling hot and tired, we walked into the magical oasis that is Furneaux Lodge.

The setting is absolutely dreamy with a large grassy yard leading down to a pretty beach. It feels tranquil and elegant. We'd splurged on a suite and were astounded by how beautiful it was. The suites are two to a building and set off on one side of the property. Ours was huge with a large living area, a separate bedroom and a big bathroom with a large shower with fluffy towels. The decor was beautiful and there was even AC (!) which meant that we were able to sleep well that night.

One small but appreciated touch was the little package of cookies in the room to go with morning tea/coffee and also instant decaf coffee (it was the only place with decaf in the room in our month of travel in NZ).

After a day of hiking, it felt great to spend some time in the hot tub and then have a drink on the main building's pretty verandah. The bartender was very sweet and let us taste several beers and ciders before deciding on one.

The one downside to Furneaux, though, is that there are no other dining options nearby and their restaurant is NOT vegetarian-friendly. There was only one vegetarian entree and no vegan ones. It's also expensive but that's to be expected given the remote location and lack of other options.

That said, we'd definitely go back and would stay for 2 nights next time.

(btw - you don't need to hike into Furneaux - the water taxis will bring you right here)

This is a review for their restaurant, not for their accommodation.

I did the Queen Charlotte Trail from Ship Cove. After 5 hours of hiking, was happy to sit down and have a great lunch, and they delivered!

Despite the remote location, they have quite an interesting and varied menu. And the food was very well cooked.

Seafood chowder was delicious. Lots of seafood inside. Almost a main sized portion, can be a good lunch on its own for one person.

Market fish of the day was delicious, and was some species I'd never heard of before, but was from the local Marlborough Sounds.

Fish and chips were good, albeit nothing special. Using gurnard fish, also from the local Marlborough Sounds.

Pricing was very good ($33-42 mains) considering the remote location of the restaurant, and also for the portion sizes.

Dining environment was more bar/pub dining room like, rather than fine dining.

They accept reservations. Officially, last order for lunch is at 2:30pm, but we arrived a bit late at like 2:45pm and still managed to get food orders in.

I know opinions vary depending on where you stay at FL, but I for one had a wonderful stay for my birthday a few weeks ago. We stayed in one of the couples chalets, Endeavour Suites, and not too close to the hot tub which was in constant use (maybe there needs to be two haha). I had brought our own snacks but we splurged on a bottle of wine & had a lovely afternoon relaxing & enjoying the stunning views. The chalet was gorgeous. Don’t think there were any negatives. Maybe more hooks in the bathroom? I loved the bathroom products and wish I’d bought a gift pack as a reminder because they all smelt amazing! We also splashed out on the seafood platter for our bday dinner (it was husband’s bday as well) and special mention to the staff (man and two women -all dark haired) who were attentive, friendly, warm and efficient :) We were lucky enough to have cracking weather for our stay and the walk to Punga Cove the next day was the icing on a very sumptuous cake. Thank you Furneaux for a lovely weekend!

From the free overnight mooring, tender service, and warm welcome from the whole team, we had an amazing service experience at Furneaux Lodge. The restaurant menu offers a first class range of delicious dinner and breakfast options plus an excellent wine list (we didn’t stay for lunch). Really enjoyed our dining experience in the cosy lodge by the fire. But our suite for the night was a special treat. Very comfortable, well appointed, with gorgeous waterfront views. Impressed by the quality furnishings, artwork, a separate lounge, large bathroom and the high gable ceiling added that extra luxe and spacious feel. Set in a gorgeous bay at the end of an inlet, the property is surrounded by beautiful water and bush views and birdsong. Everyone was so attentive and friendly. Absolutely loved it, thanks for a fabulous stay!

my family and i went for a day trip to furneaux lodge. having gone last year, we knew that it would be a good experience as it was a great one last year. we booked ourselves a table and ordered food and drinks. the issue arose when we received our “iced chocolates” if they can be called that. they were hot chocolates that had been dumped in a tall glass and had ice put in them. the bottom half of the drink was still hot, and had absolutely zero flavour.

i didn’t want to be that complaining karen so i asked politely at the bar starting with the words “i hate sounding fussy” as i hate complaining and being that person. i explained the issue, and the man that served me rudely told me that they are made that way and i explained they were still hot on the bottom. i gestured the glass for him to feel, and he snatched it out of my hand, threw a curt “ill make a new one” over his shoulder, and threw the contents of the glass so harshly into the sink, it went all up the backsplash.

i expected better than this type of service. aside from that, awesome food and awesome time with my family :)

We arrived by boat, stayed two nights in a Cooks Cottage, which was perfect - clean and cosy with a small kitchen, a large deck looking out across the bay, and two bedrooms with comfortable beds. The bar was happy to supply wine with an ice bucket and glasses to take back to the cottage for complete relaxation in the afternoon sun. It's the ideal spot to walk a section of the Queen Charlotte Track, or just to relax and unwind. There is minimal cellphone coverage, wifi at the office area only, and no TV in the rooms, so you can get away from all the drama, or hang out in the bar and restaurant with other guests, have a delicious meal in the restaurant, or go out kayaking or paddleboarding.
