Detailed Reviews
The location was sublime tucked away around the Sounds along winding forest covered roads and right on the waters edge. The room looked out onto the bay and it was a touch of paradise especially at night with the waves gently lapping at the shore.
The room we had was spacious with a full kitchen, dining and lounge, lovely sized bedroom and a large bathroom which included laundry facilities.
There was an on-site shop for coffee and other drinks and a food "truck" cooking great food to sit and enjoy looking over the water again....mind it did close a litle early at 7 p.m. but really this is not a major issue.
Loads of history, friendly owners and staff....we will go back as it was simply beautiful.....add to a bucket list lovely!

Our extended family stayed in a Heritage room and other family members stayed in a Waterfront motel. While the heritage room was a little dated in terms of interior, that was insignificant compared to the stunning views and wonderful memories we created during our wonderful stay!
We took full advantage of all the facilities on offer including kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming and fishing. We also loved that it was a laid back, idyllic location, but still catered for life’s little pleasures like a wonderful massage, good coffee, well stocked shop and great meals courtesy of Tinkers Kitchen caravan!
Our family group ranged from ages 15 to 75 and every single one of us loved our Te Mahia stay. We are already planning to return again next year!
Thanks so much for a wonderful stay.

We were staying in an Airbnb further out near Portage and were looking for somewhere for lunch when we found this fabulous little haven. Run by the lovely and ever-smiling Jann & Trevor it has a stunning position overlooking the water. The recent addition of Tinker's Kitchen mobile eatery is what made this a particularly memorable stop for us. The food is simple but really fantastic. Although there is nowhere else to go in this area, this place would be a 'stand-out' in any location with any amount of other options. It was brilliant and certainly somewhere we would go back to... and stay... in the future. Thoroughly recommended.

Went here for morning tea whilst walking the QC Track. Ordered slice, sausage roll and drinks from the coffee shop and sat in the very pleasant garden of Tinkers Kitchen. Average sausage roll. As we were leaving I needed to fill my drink bottle up as I hadn’t had any water with my coffee. I went to use the glass water cooler in the shop and was told not to use that (despite daughter using it earlier) there was a tap outside I could use. The tap outside was a hose pipe so I had to fill my bottle with warm hose pipe tasting water. Poor show for a resort. We had spent $25 on food and had to drink suspect water. Not very happy and wouldn’t go back because of this.

Thank you for your comments, we do provide complimentary glasses of cinnamon and mint water with our coffees - these are delivered with your coffee. The glass water container is a unique drink dispenser for our complimentary flavoured glasses of water and not a general purpose water bottle filler. We always have plenty of chilled bottled water for sale if you had wanted to purchase any of that. Every day we get dozens of requests to fill copious water bottles- our little coffee shop is not designed for this- nor are any restaurants in town for that matter. The water supply available outside is from the same source as our internal supply. We pride ourselves on our service delivery.

We didn’t stay at the resort but drove there for lunch. The meal was fantastic, cooked in a caravan on site called Tinkers Kitchen . Sat on the deck overlooking the beautiful bay.
Great meals .
Only gripe is that access to the beach is only for guests staying there.
We went to the nearby jetty and swam of that which was great and swam around the corner to the next bay which was once again beautiful. But it would have been nice to be able to use the beach at Te Mahia - even if they had a small charge for it, especially since we dined there.
Friendly staff .
The bay is beautiful, lovely swim.

We are so pleased that you had a lovely meal at Tinkers and enjoyed your experience...yes the beach is just for guests that are staying at the resort, as that is one of our unique selling points that we have Riparian rights and can offer this feature for our guests, so they are not unindated with other visitors to the resort wanting to use the facilities. Perhaps next time you might like to book in for a night and experience more of what Te Mahia has to offer.

Te Mahia resort offers huge rooms with lovely decor overlooking the bay. They have a "Tinkers Kitchen" a caravan onsite that does amazing lunches and evening meals which can be eaten al fresco or taken back to your rooms. From here you can walk pars of the Queen Charlotte track and take in view of both sounds at once. If you need a chance to unwind this is the place

We arrived by road after asking the road workers if the road was ok to drive on, and the go ahead given. Well, the owner Jann Hook couldn’t have been nastier or more belittling if she tried. We were subjected to a 30 minute rant regarding road safety…. Totally and utterly unnecessary as we’d gained permission by the safety warden fixing the road, she could easily have said “you were mis informed and the road is possibly dangerous so take care going back”.
My intention was to arrive and ask to see the rooms as there were many many free on line for the 3 nights I wanted. However after the abuse and our long drive from beautiful Kaikora we just opted for her cheapest room at $200 since we were told we could only stay 1 night and needed to get off her property by 8am.
The property:
1 star for the lovely view, nice view of water & mountains.
Negatives: the room is so outdated with everything plastic or polyester, the tv was smaller than my laptop and the WiFi was non existent. It was reminiscent of 1970’s Butlins, the shower was a dribble at best. Weirdly there were beds in the sitting room and an extra bed in the bedroom.
According to Lonely planet this is supposed to be a fabulous place, it isn’t. I peeked in the other rooms in the heritage bit and it looked just as dreary.
Aside from 2 slices of sad looking quiche in the office fridge we’d have gone hungry as no food truck & place deserted. Luckily we’d shopped in Havelock.
No doubt the owner will come back with a smart retort, but as they’re apparently trying to sell (so I hear) she may not even bother.

The road is officially closed and has been since August 2022, due to the severe storm damage in the sounds. The clients took it upon themselves to ignore the very prominent 5 Road Closed signs and continued to drive the severely damaged road to access our property. Thus, endangering themselves and others who need to use the road in an emergency. The roading crew person was not working on the Kenepuru Road, but the Queen Charlotte Drive and had no jurisdiction as to the state of the Kenepuru Road and its access- this was explained to the client. Road closure information is also on the Marlborough Roads website, our Te Mahia website and also Booking.com for all to read prior to booking. The safety of our clients is always paramount to us, and if we feel that they are endangering themselves or others by their actions then we will inform them of this. All access is solely by water and everyone who books with us in advance is notified via email of the water transport options to access us. Throughout this summer we have had hundreds of guests who have come by water and had a wonderful experience. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. A wonderful selection of food is available at the coffee shop, and Stone Grilled Pizzas are served when our Tinkers Kitchen is not open. All our units have full kitchens and we do sell a large array of groceries and beverages in the shop for those clients who arrive without provisions. Our wonderful Te Mahia Bay Resort is not for sale as we love our Resort and all our amazing guests who come back year after year to ever think about selling.

What a lovely tranquil place right on the water this is. We arrived late afternoon and we immediately offered, and accepted, an upgrade to a waterside view unit. This was certainly much larger than the normal studio type unit and when or if I stayed here again this is what I would choose.
All the ammenities were as you would expect but the welcome and conviviality of the hosts made it even a better stay. The bed was comfortable and we were lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of the water below us.
The meal we had sitting out on the deck area overlooking the water and next to Tinkers Kitchen was rustic but sufficient. if you are driving there I’d recommend going via Havelock rather than from Picton.

About the only place to stop on Kennepura Sound by road, for a coffee lunch or whatever. A warm and friendly welcome the twice we’ve been, good coffees, excellent choices of teas, homemade slices, and a pop up kitchen outside serving lunch or brunch foods. Shop inside with interesting ‘different’ items. Beautiful setting just above the little bay, and short walk to jetty, water taxi, and even a small sandy beach - when the tides out! Would love to stay here another time.
