We found The South Pier Inn to be a lovely hotel in a unique location. This was our first stop in Duluth, but it won’t be our last! There are a surprising amount of things to see and do in Duluth, definitely an “under the radar” gem of a city. We had a Deluxe Waterfront Suite, King Harbor Upper, and enjoyed watching numerous big freighters coming and going to and from the harbor over several days. The South Pier Inn has the perfect location right by the canal, the harbor and the aerial lift bridge, with easy strolls to the pier. We also enjoyed being able to sit in our living area or on the balcony and watch the harbor activities. Pretty sunsets and the lights of Duluth made for relaxing evenings. Our suite was super clean and very well maintained, we have stayed at many, many hotels at all price points over many years of business and pleasure travel, and I can honestly say this was one of the cleanest hotels we’ve ever stayed in. We felt welcomed by the staff, felt comfortable and at home from the minute we entered our suite, and enjoyed a chance meeting with two of the owners on the patio area. It is clear they enjoy meeting their guests and take much pride in providing a clean, comfortable and enjoyable Inn for their guests. A few other points to mention: Despite being in the heart of Duluth right by the busy bridge and Canal Park, our suite was very quiet at night. The King bed was very comfortable. The towels were plush and plentiful, and there were actual towel bars! So many hotels (mostly mid-range chains) don’t have towel bars but ask you to conserve water by reusing yet give you nowhere to hang them. No worries here, several nice towel bars were in the spacious bathroom. Lighting was very good, but not so bright as to blind you when you turned on the bath lights. Handy little kitchenette area with wet bar and fridge, plenty of paper towels, tissues and toilet paper provided upon arrival. Chairs and a couch in the living area that were clean and comfortable and you actually wanted to sit on them. Nice variety of grab n go breakfast items, yogurt, donuts, muffins, coffee etc. (no dine in area due to Covid restrictions). My only suggestion would be the addition of small cartons of milk for guests. To sum up a rather long review, this was our favorite hotel during our 7 state, 3400+ mile, 3 week trip “Up North.” We have already booked the same type room for another stay next September and look forward to returning.

I had to travel to Duluth for my 2nd Covid vaccine shot. South Pier Inn on the Canal is a great location, not too big and crowded, room was delightful, great view of harbor through large clean windows on 2nd floor PLUS a small walk-out balcony!!
(NOT for smokers.) Jacuzzi/hot tub in room if you crave that kind of thing. (Plus full bathroom with standard shower as well.) Room was very clean, tidy and comfortable. Soaring high white clean ceilings with sunken lights give a feeling of being at beach resort! Great natural light, feels uplifting, airy. Front desk Service was very good. Staff highly conscientious about proper masking. Room was very quiet and serene. Only possible drawback is that there really is no desk surface to speak of nor table suitable for eating, even for 1 person. Only table in the room is a small round glass cocktail table between 2 TV-watching armchairs. No surface to put your laptop on if working, you will just have to sit on the bed. These rooms are clearly designed for guests who intend to eat their meals out, not in, which is not surprising since this is mostly a tourist/vacation type town where most guests are likely to want to eat meals out. Coffee machine set up did not include tea bags so BYO, tea drinkers.

Ask for a 2nd floor room w/water view. If none are available and you get a first floor room you will still have an ok experience. Just ask for a better price than upstairs rooms.

After a terrible experience in Duluth last month for my first Covid19 shot, when I stayed at The Inn on Lake Superior which supplies a dirty lobby, dirty hallways, a very dirty dusty room that stank of mold and mildew , air duct vents in the wall came off BLACK after a wipe with a damp washcloth, PLUS a bed with soiled bed sheets stained with human body fluids... After that experience, the The clean, light, bright, room at the South Pier Inn was a great relief and pleasure. I would stay here again if I could get one of the 2nd floor harbor view rooms.

There are many things about this property to give high marks but the first has to be it's proximity to the central point of interest in Duluth - the bridge. This hotel is at the foot of the historic and iconic bridge and thus affords a relaxing experience where you can fully appreciate the fascinating structure and waterway. We've visited the north shore numerous times and stayed in Duluth often but this was our first time lodging on Park Point. It was so nice to avoid the challenging crowds (even in a pandemic people flock to this landmark) and vehicle logistics of canal park. This is just a great location to stay and walk or bike to park point or over the bridge to canal park.

Our room (103) was very clean and quiet with a comfortable bed. We stayed on the 'neighborhood' side overlooking the smallish parking lot. From the second floor, our windows offered a pleasant view of trees with a sneak peak of the lake. Lot's of natural light poured into the room and there is a nice little terrace with potted flowers. An added bonus in Covid times was the main entry to our area served only two units. It was nice to not worry about walking down crowded hallways.

The property really shines with the spacious manicured lawn that faces the canal and harbor. We took advantage of the various Adirondack chairs placed around the hotel to relax and watch the boating activity and take in the city views. There is a very nice patio area near the entry with chairs, tables and a gas fireplace. We enjoyed several nice meals there while keeping an eye on the bridge activity. Don't miss a walk by the beautiful garden just east of the hotel by the harbor.

TIP: If you're new to Duluth absolutely make sure to check the shipping schedule!

Finally, the staff and owners are so nice. It's clear they take pride in this hotel.

I can hardly recommend the SPI enough.

The South Pier Inn is a perfect boutique hotel. The location on the canal is the perfect spot to watch the ships enter and leave the canal. A quick walk across the lift bridge takes you to Grandma’s Restaurant, the Maritime Museum, and some fun shopping. The fireplace was a treat on a cool night, and the propane fire pit facing the lift bridge is a great spot to relax on a nice evening.

The staff is the kindest, most attentive group. They all go out of their way to make your stay amazing. The owners are often present and are also so hospitable. They have planted beautiful tulip and dahlia beds on the harbor side for guest enjoyment. The beds are comfortable with nice linens and comforters, and fluffy pillows. The bath towels are large and fluffy. Two bathrobes are provided for use in the room.

The breakfast donuts, muffins, bagels, and cranberry/wild rice bread for toast are made fresh daily at a local bakery. Greek yogurt is available with several toppings. Hard boiled eggs, a variety of juices, and water bottles are chilled in the fridge. With the exception of the Greek yogurt bar, this lovely spread is available all day as long as each item lasts. They also stock fresh cookies and there is always a candy jar on the lobby desk. They provide trays so you can easily take your food to the room to earplugs.

I can’t wait to bring my husband for a relaxing getaway.

If you want one of the kind experience being on the water this is the place where to stay .It will leave you with lasting memories of large ships , beautiful sunsets and the peacefulness of the port . I know what are you thinking now ? Those two things do not come together but it is going to be an adventure that you will never forget .
The rooms are large and tastefully furnished with contemporary furniture , not to mention the balcony , fire place and jacuzzi -:) . The owners are very kind and you might be greeted by one of them when you check in -:) The breakfast bar offers some pastry and coffee from local business in addition to fruits , yogurt , cereal etc .
Great location , walking distance to restaurants and the beach , you can leave your car and explore many attractions that Duluth offers .

My husband and I decided to stay right on the canal! We were recommended South Pier Inn, and we were very pleased with our stay! It’s a small inn right on the canal, and we enjoyed it very much. Each room has a jacuzzi tub which I LOVED, the view from our harbor view room was amazing (pictures posted). They had a little fire pit we enjoyed with a few other guest in the evening. They also had complimentary breakfast all individually wrapped so we felt safe eating the breakfast items, and it made it easy for us to get up and go! The rooms had beautiful windows over looking the harbor and great blinds to block out the light.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at the beautiful South Pier Inn, and we will be back!

My husband and I chose this inn for a last minute getaway to Duluth. We booked just a couple of days before heading up for our Wed-Fri late July stay. Within the first 30 minutes of arriving we knew we had picked a great place. The inn is small, family owned, and perfectly located next to the lift bridge and canal in Duluth. We stayed in a standard room, which faced the parking lot, but also had a view of the bridge, and a peekaboo view of the lake between the trees. The rooms are simply decorated yet well appointed with charging cables, good lighting, small fridge, work space, seating area and balcony space. Linens are soft and comfortable and bathroom space large and clean. In spite of facing the parking lot and the inn being right next to the bridge it was very quiet at night. We slept with the patio door cracked and did not get bothered by any noises. The continental breakfast had plenty of choice for us and we appreciated the availability of water and coffee throughout our stay. Loved the Adirondack chairs and fire table on the front lawn of the hotel! Great place to meet some fellow travelers and the inn owners, who are lovely, friendly people. We also enjoyed the stories we heard during the morning walking tour of the pier. Highly recommend this as your lodging choice for a stay in Duluth!

We had a great mini getaway at South Pier Inn! Our boys loved watching the ships go by, the lift bridge, and watching the Bentleyville Christmas lights across the bay. We had a great room! The room was very clean and we loved that the room door was an exterior door so it was very easy to keep social distance. It was really nice to have a separate bedroom so our little boys were able to go to bed on time and we didn’t have to worry about waking them. We stayed in room 501 which was a Deluxe Suite Canal. We can’t wait to come back again!

I have just returned from a stay at the South Pier Inn on Canal Park. The Inn sits on Lake Superior and is an ideal spot to watch ships enter, and leave, the harbor.
While the majority of rooms face the water, our room (103) was neighborhood facing. Despite this, there was ample seating in areas facing the water. The rooms were inviting and clean and the staff was helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast included local foods and was healthy and filling.
The Inn's owners have paid attention to detail in planning and maintaining this property.

We went to see the Bentleyville Light Display and it was so pretty. Will probably do it every year. The best part of the trip was South Pier Inn. We started going there in 2007 I believe. It is still just as lovely as ever. The manager, Branden, and Eric are so very accommodating. We had a little issue with our reservation and they took care of us. My daughter and her friends were visiting the area just for the day and one of the employees offered to let them use their hose to rinse the sand off of their feet. My daughter says she had a great time at the South Pier Inn and she didn't even stay there. One of the housekeepers made a really cute little handwarmer pillow and left it as a gift in our suite. Just super nice people.
