Now that lock down rules have all but gone we decided to take ourselves off for a last minute trip to the south of France. On our way south we decided to revisit La Croix du Rapt and although the weather was somewhat cooler than it had been when we were there a few years ago, the welcome from the live-in host Dorothy was a very warm and welcoming one. We packed our few day stop over with a few old haunts. The local bar is a must and I am sure you could, like we did, twist Dot's arm to go with you especially if, like me, you could do with someone to help you with the language as the owner speaks no English. On the recommendation of Dot we tried out a few new restaurants that had opened and, as she always visits them herself before recommending, we were not disappointed. We also spent a wonderful afternoon in St Emilion which is only a short drive away and is well worth a visit for all its glorious wines. Sadly our short visit ended all too soon but it is a place we will visit again.......and again!! If you book I have every confidence you will not be disappointed with your stay as all the rooms are well presented and have spectacular views across the surrounding countryside.

Just returned from a 9 day break at this lovely property in a fantastic rural setting. The sun was shining everyday so we had breakfast, lunch and supper al fresco either at the property or at one of the many restaurants a short drive away. The owner is more than happy to give recommendations as to where in the area to go as there are many interesting places to visit as well as eat. On our arrival we lacked some provisions as the supermarket was closed and Dorothy was more than happy to provide us with some basics, free of charge I may add, which was very kind of her. The rooms are of great proportions, all have en-suite facilities and spectacular views out over the surrounding farm land. Some of the sunsets we witnessed were wonderful and the ability to stargaze is amazing. The guest sitting room has UK TV and there is WiFi available at no extra charge. The village bar, short walking distance away, is an old world gem and has become a regular feature of our visits. We have visited this property on a number of occasions and will return again, of that I am sure.

We had the most magical time staying at Dotothy's B+B, stunning converted farmhouse surrounded my brilliant sunflowers and a sunset to die for.

All huge rooms with ensuites which our group size occupied the entire property for 8 days. A great kitchen area and outside area dinning which we had to ourselves. Overlooking a large pool. Large grounds full of plum trees so quiet and picturesque.

Dorothy made our whole trip even better with her extreme kindness and local knowledge and we thoroughly enjoyed sharing a few evenings together and many bottles of wine. We fully intend to return one day.

On arrival we found the property to be in a dirty and rundown condition, particularly the kitchen which was filthy. The doors and light switches were grubby and the kitchen table, worktops, splash back, hob and cooker had not been cleaned for months. Outside the garden and paths were unkept and overgrown. Some of the tiles around the pool were loose and the pool walls were covered in green algae. The pool lining had a bad repair and the steps into the pool were uneven and dangerous. For a 5 bedroom property there were only 4 loungers, all of which were broken. The owner who we found to be most intrusive and disagreeable lived in an adjoining part of the property with her dog and had her television on loudly most days and nights. The view from the pool was the her private garden which was also overgrown and unkept, and looked like a scrap yard. We complained to the owner who came in intermittently over three days to clean, but this was far from satisfactory so we ended up cleaning it ourselves.

We stayed here as a group of 11. Having read the reviews we were a little anxious due to the lack of photos and the last review being over 2 years ago but booked regardless. Upon arrival we were very pleased with the location and the views were spectacular. The property is well laid out and has 5 large bedrooms all with en suites which we were pleased with. I believe that the owner usually operates as a B&B and therefore is not used to large parties and the owner nor the property were adequately prepared for accommodating us. Renting a property in its entirety would usually give you the freedom to treat it as a home from home but with the owner on site 24/7 it was quickly apparent that she was very uncomfortable with having a large group. Her dog would bark loudly every time we entered the property which was very unsettling for my mother in law who is afraid of dogs. We ranged from aged 12 to 74. Not exactly club 18-30 but that’s how we were made to feel after one evening when our grown up children (aged 12-15) went for a late evening swim (9.30pm) and we were lectured aggressively for being irresponsible despite being in the outside courtyard. Never in over 20 years of renting holiday villas have I ever had an issue with the management or owners and it has always been a real highlight to have the opportunity to swim in the evening. Nevertheless we abided by her rules and never swam in the evening again. Despite the appalling manners of the owner, we nevertheless had a really great holiday and we did not allow her constant petit complaints to destroy our holiday. As a family, we chose not to complain and simply accepted the quirks however you should be aware that the property was very dirty, the poolside had uneven slabs and was poorly maintained. There was also no pathway leading to the pool which was dangerous. The septic tank gave off a bad smell all day. The shower didn’t drain. The lounge area was dusty, poorly furnished and smelt of must. The outside garden was poorly kept and full of weeds. It really has the potential to be beautiful but looks uncared for and neglected. As a family who never complain, we would have usually overlooked all these things but as the owner was so irrational I felt that they needed to be disclosed to other potential guests. Perhaps if she was approachable we would have tactfully highlighted these areas of concern but we thought this would just cause more problems for us. All in all a beautiful farmhouse but with an appalling host!

Response from dorothy allan, Owner at La Croix du Rapt
Responded 8 Sept 2020
This a vexatious review from a group who treated my property with utter disrespect, and had the cost of repairing and replacing things they broke deducted from their breakages deposit. They broke the flush mechanisim of one of the toilets and never mentioned it. I discovered water running through it when I stripped the beds and when I asked them about it the said it was like that when they arrived. implausible. The three children were swimming unsupervised at 22.30 in the dark, (although it would have been 9.30 in the UK, but not here in France). The group had been told that the pool was out of bounds at night when they asked about lighting around the pool (there is none). You cannot see the part of the pool the children were using from the table in the courtyard which is where the adults were sitting. They breached the rental contract by allowing the children to swim unsupervised. I intervened because it was a dangerous situation. As they say in their review, they never mentioned any of these issues while they were here, that is because they are untrue. Each time I saw them, I asked if everything was okay and got confirmation that all was fine. As you can see here all the other reviews are 5 star. This was the worst group I have ever experienced.

Booked this place as due to Covid, our options were limited. Uncared for farmhouse, owner lives on site and not very welcoming. Toilets pans were stained, dusty and dirty under beds, foul smelling cesspit making the gardens smell terrible. Gardens unkempt with weeds and dead flowers and plants everywhere. Unstable poolside slabs, with no path leading to pool area, very slippery. Dead animal lying by the pool when we arrived. Fly infested kitchen, kitchen cupboards and oven dirty.
Has the potential to be lovely, especially if the owner did not live onsite, and some major clean / tidy up jobs were done. Explains why the good reviews on here are all very old ones - I'm sure at one time it would have been a great place. Will definitely not be visiting again.

Just returned from yet another great break in Champagne et Fontaine staying at the lovely La Crox du Rapt. The rooms are all well appointed with lots of space but most of all fantastic views from every one! The pool is superb and a real bonus to come back to after a trip to one of the many great places to visit nearby ( the owner has a fantastic knowledge of where is best to go if you are visiting for the first time). The local bar is also a must visit and again Dorothy will be happy to point you on the right direction. The fields round the house were planted with Sunflower but the flower head had not come out so those visitong later in the summer will have them to look out on from every bedroom.

All in all a real home from home and well worth a visit. I am looking forward to my next visit already!!

Stayed here with my family for a week and felt like a second home. Stunning tranquil location but close enough to all types of activities and sightseeing. Beautifully renovated farmhouse with large rooms and separate bathrooms. We had a 1 year old with us and had everything we could need...

Dorothy the owner was a fantastic host and made us all feel at home.... Also fantastic knowledge of the local areas to help you explore real France...

All in all a fantastic holiday and would stay here anytime...

We have just returned from a fantastic visit to the Dordogne. We stayed at La Croix du Rapt and could not fault it. The property is a beautifully renovated traditional farm house, which has very generously proportioned rooms with well equipped en suite shower rooms. Dorothy, the hostess, went out of her way to make our stay a memorable one, providing maps and tour guides for the surrounding area along with her own suggestions of interesting places to visit, nothing was too much trouble. The garden is large giving ample space for a lovely big swimming pool which is surrounded by a terrace which has a number of sun beds that can all be used at no extra charge. The property is also a short walk from the village bar if you are not wanting to venture further afield but if you do there are a number of very good restaurants, most of which Dorothy has visited and can give her views on. All in all a superb B& B which could only be discribed as fantastic value for money. This was our third visit this year and I am already planning our next one. A must to visit if you are in the area.
