Catlins Farmstay B&B is a great location for visiting the many scenic attractions of the beautiful natural Catlins area of Southland. We are situated 10 minutes drive from the 160 year old fossil forest at Curio Bay where dolphins and penguins may also be seen.We are genuine kiwis farming 2800 sheep, 500 deer, and 150 cattle on 1000 acres with the help of 3 sheep dogs. You may choose from hosted accommodation at Catlins Farmstay B&B or self contained studio accommodation at Waterside Cottage (built in 2007) in the village of Waikawa - an old fishing settlement.

We enjoyed our stay very much. We had a comfortable, large and clean room, we liked our friendly and helpful hosts and we enjoyed a very good breakfast. We wished we would have stayed longer! A good accommodation to explore the Catlins.

This B&B was quite unusual as it is in a Forrest and secluded. Our hosts, Murray and June were very welcoming and joined in the conversation with other guests over a lovely cooked breakfast. They were able to tell us where to visit to see various scenic sights and watch penguins return from the sea at dusk. Our room was spacious and clean with lovely views of the garden. You need to be aware that a vehicle is essential and a full tank of fuel is advisable as there are no service stations close by. Nearby restaurants are not plentiful and you may need to drive up to 12 kilometres to find one to suit your taste.

Murray and June welcomed us to their excellent bed and breakfast. We had an en-suite room room overlooking the garden that was very peaceful and quiet. We awoke to the dawn chorus from garden and nearby trees. We were provided with an excellent breakfast and furnished many tips of things to do and see in the local area. It may be off the beaten track but it is well worth the detour.

We stayed here for 3 nights.
Beautiful gardens. Lovely hostess Jacelyn with son Bo. Husband and the other son were away. Jacelyn was very welcoming and gracious. Her breakfasts were wonderful! Although this is not a true Farmstay any longer, Jacelyn lined up a sheep farm tour for us, which we really enjoyed. The beach at Curio Bay was the best we’ve seen in New Zealand. Wide, expansive, beautiful and empty.
Do take precautions for the sandflies.

We had an all too brief one night stay here as part of our tour of South Island. Hosts June and Murray are former farmers who have semi-retired to run the B&B (the farming operation is in the hands of family).

We received a warm country welcome and Murray whisked us away for a tour of the area in his ute - a great journey in (his words) a 'farming hack' - i.e. wipe your feet on the way out.

Our room was nicely furnished and, as June and Murray were out for the evening, we had free run of the house - wifi is available only in the lounge/dining room area. We were able to share in the family history through the series of photographs around the place - a really nice personal touch.

In the morning June provided the best B&B breakfast I think we've ever had (and we've had quite a few) and struck the perfect balance of friendly conversation - leaving us to eat in peace and coming to chat afterwards.

After breakfast Murray provided us with some wellies (google it) and took us to a neighbouring farm to see a sheep shearing team at work - actually working, not a tourist demonstration. It was really interesting to see the team at work and chat to the farmer.

The Catlins and the Southlands in general is a more gentle area of countryside compared to Otago but is well worth visiting, both the country and beaches are beautiful and a B&B is the perfect place to stay to see them. I doubt you'll find a better one than this.

We arrived at 24 December 2014 just before teatime. We were invited to have tea with homemade pie in the garden. June and Murray are wonderful hosts. Our breakfast in the morning, Christmas day, was overwhelming. And June just replied "o it is not much more than a regular breakfast".
Next time we will definitely stay a bit longer to enjoy their hospitality and see more of the Catlins, which is very beautiful.

Staying here was a lovely contrast to the chain hotel we'd just left. The location is wonderful, so peaceful & tranquil, our room cosy and comfy, but the real highlights are the owners, June & Murray. They couldn't have made us more welcome, and just sitting with them in their lounge, in front of a warm log fire, drinking tea, eating scones and talking to them was a real delight. They went out of their way to recommend things to do, and sorted out a reservation at the local restaurant.Really glad we stayed here.

Lovely country farm location with a beautiful garden and very clean/comfortable rooms with their own en-suites.Very short dirt-road ride to Niagara (and NZ's very own Niagara Falls).
June welcomed us with friendly chatter in addition to tea/coffee and jam scones on the garden table. Murray was a very attentive breakfast host - providing cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast and any cooked breakfast meal you might ask for - and supplier of local information and activity guidance. He'll even give you a guided tour of their very extensive farm.

We stayed only for one night but we enjoyed it very much. The room we stayed in was very lovely and clean with a own entrance. June and Murray were very lovely hosts and gave us good hints where we could find hector-dolphins and penguins.

Not just the hosts - Murray and June - are totally warm and nice, also the huge farmland itself is charming and worth a stay! June took us on a car ride arround their farmland which was a very nice addon after the breakfast with the self made muffins ;-) The area arround the B&B is very quiet and beautiful - wish to come back one day!!! Our trips to porpoise bay and curio bay were stunning - the penguins will make you laugh over and over again! The bottom line here is: everything was perfect for us.
