Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our campsite on Kings Clift was so nice! very private and the most beautiful view over the sea. The dappled light from the Pohutukawas overhead and the crashing surf encourage relaxation. The big white sandy beach is perfect for swimming and lounging.
The only down side is the substantial walk up and down a hill to get to and from the car, but if that's the only exercise I get whilst on holiday, then that's not such a bad thing.
The only amenities are a "compost toilet" (long drop) and a shower stall to hang your own solar shower, both are kept spotlessly clean due to regular cleaning. There is a cold water tap at every site.

A wonderful camp with sites scattered around the hills and foreshore. Ocean Beaches and estuary lap at your doorstep. The sites are relatively large and trees provide shade. The facilities are basic but well maintained and overall good value. To top it off the camp is a 5 min drive from really lovely fast food. We will visit again.

We spent Christmas here 2 years ago, and loved it so much we went back for 3 nights this Christmas. We pre-booked with Bruce a couple of weeks before, and asked for a private pitch if possible, and he gave us an amazing spot on the cliff side, overlooking the beach. It was a bit of a climb back up from the beach, but it was well worth it for the view from our tent. It was pretty busy there, but we felt like we were the only ones there while up on our site.

While there are only cold showers and long drop toilets, they were clean and always had toilet paper and soap. Freezer space is available for hire at $3 a night, which I didn't mind paying as it was only $15 a night to stay which is reasonable for such a lovely site.

For those who surf, there has been waves of some sort every day that we've stayed there, on both our visits. It gets dumpy at high tide, and is a bit rocky over on the left, but it is a decent wave and good for me as a beginner, as well as my husband who is pretty good! It's a stunning beach, and I wish we'd had a chance to kayak as well as there is plenty more to explore.

I guess the only drawbacks are the lack of fridges, and no hot showers, but that's no biggy when the location is so amazing!

Be warned that some of the sites aren't accessible by vehicle. We were sent to the wrong pitch by mistake, and I was relieved it was the wrong one as it was about 50m down a very steep slope! Not an issue if you travel light, but if you have a lot of stuff then you'd need to be fit! If you book ahead though, there are plenty of nice, private, easily accessible sites. A 4WD is very useful (especially for us when leaving on a very wet day, and having to drive off the site down a steep grass slope!), but there are a range of sites to suit all vehicles.

We've done quite a lot of camping in NZ, and this is by far the nicest site we've been to, and we will most definitely be coming back a third time!

We have been camping here for years can't wait to get back next year. Truly a stunning place to camp. There is no power but all you need are good lanterns. The beach is beautiful. You also need solar showers, which is fine they heat up nicely during the day. There is freezer space you can hire and a small shop down the road for milk bread etc

We had never stayed there before but based on these reviews we took the campervan and headed north. The first night was a Friday night and we had a nice site with a view of the ocean. On the Sunday night after most of the campers had left, we relocated to the beach front. It was simply magic! Fellow campers were courteous and quiet. The long drops are the best we have ever encountered! Immaculately clean and not smelly. Yup you read that right. Never ran out of loo paper either as regularly checked. There are numerous taps with lovely drinking water and the showers, although cold, weren't icy. We took a solar shower and were stoked to see there were hooks and a pulley so we could hang it up it in the shower. Plenty of room in the shower stalls to hang your things so they don't get wet. We want to rave about this place to everyone we know but on the other hand, we want to keep it to ourselves! Haha. We went at the end of the season and had gorgeous weather for the last week in February. As most people had gone back to work/school it was brilliant and many times we had the beach to ourselves. Can't wait to go back and in fact, may go back end of March because we miss it already. We stayed at Barrons South and it was easy to get the large-ish campervan around with no issues. Cellphone service is patchy but if you walk around you can sometimes find service. Otherwise top of the hill near the office has ok signal. Local shop is a few minutes drive away, would take ages to walk there and back I reckon.

Oh and did I mention it was only $15 a day each?

We spent the weekend there, a group of friends with a mix of tents and caravans. Beautiful scenery and clean toilets. No power sites (that I was aware of) but we are all quite happy with that.
Lots to explore in the area whether walking, running, mountain biking or in and on the water. If the wind is blowing in one direction you can head over the hill and get out of it

We only stayed here one night, but we could easily have stayed longer. The location is very good: the beach is only a few steps away.
There are also a lot of camping sites and enough space for everybody.
There are only cold showers and long stop toilets though. But that doesn't matter for the fair price they offer.

A spectacular place and a wonderful experience.
The views are incredible and this camping spot is just made perfect.
Plenty of sites to pitch up that are separated from the others by just enough to feel that you have your own slice of paradise.
Easy access to both a lovely beach and a calm bay.
Immaculate long drop toilets are everywhere, as are the camp showers and rinsing hoses.
Other that that, the facilities are a combination of what you bring and the stunning scenery that surrounds you.
Outstanding camping for everyone.

This campground is just fantastic. We spent 3 nights with friends and family and enjoyed the fabulous views and the spectacular beaches. Facilities are basic with cold water showers, but always clean. The individual sites are huge and the place is perfect for kids. Truly a hidden gem.
