Detailed Reviews
we were warmly greeted by lady melville and might just be my favourite b and b stay. horses and dogs greet you and you get a real feel of being in the countryside whilst being near local amenities eg post office /pub. book early to get a good room as they vary in size and style of bathroom. No need to come to luckington for a particular cause; swimming pool/tennis/long walks all on offer. A county house experience. The breakfast 9/10. Only have to ask what you would like and all usual options available. would def stay again,

Luckington in Wiltshire is what the mind conjures when “English village” is mentioned. The Street, which runs through it, is bordered by old stone houses and high walls. Not far, the village church is visible. A pub and a small shop, at the post office, round out the high spots. It is into this timeless image that I drove our rented car. My wife and I were in search of a little history.
Bridges Court is a manorial historic residence behind a wall in the center of Luckington. It is a beautiful stone structure which is a listed building. Upon entry, behind the wooden gates, there are stables to the right where agreeable horses whinny a welcome. There is an ample car park. Entry is gained after knocking on the wooden door. We had found our bed and breakfast.
We were met at the door by Lady Fiona Melville. Through the passage we entered into the main entry hall. Family portraits and photos, as well as trophies emblematic of significant family equestrian success, abounded. Our room, on the third floor (second floor to our English friends), was reached via a wooden, carpeted spiral staircase from the second floor hallway.
The room was very comfortable with television and heat as well as the makings for tea and coffee. The en-suite bath facility was also newly remodeled and the shower was vigorous, a welcome luxury after a long drive. At Lady Fiona’s invitation we joined her for tea and biscuits in a warm drawing room. Lady Fiona could not have been more welcoming. We had a very pleasant chat.
It was during tea that I told Lady Fiona the reason for our visit. I have an interest in history in general and have developed a particular interest in intelligence history. As World War II raged, the head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, Sir Stewart Menzies, would spend, when possible, weekends at his home in the country: Bridges Court. Sir Stewart was a colossal figure in the allied intelligence effort both during the war and after. He was a spymaster who lived the life of a country gentleman, including riding with the nearby Beaufort Hunt, which provided wonderful cover.
Lady Fiona, upon hearing of my interest, conducted us on a tour of Bridges Court, which was described in detail in the major biography of Sir Stewart. The history of the house and the graciousness of Lady Fiona made for a wonderfully memorable afternoon. She also showed us around the property, which included a walled garden area and a walk through the barn in which she retains a trunk that once belonged to Sir Stewart. I should also add that we were welcomed by her three dogs in residence, especially the particularly friendly little Molly.
Late in the afternoon, we strolled down to the local church, Saint Mary and St. Ethelbert, a building of Norman origin, and visited it and Sir Stewart’s grave. Later we dined at the pub, the Old Royal Ship, which was excellent. The locals in the post office and in the pub were very welcoming.
The following morning, Lady Fiona served a fine “Full English” breakfast and we were off. Bridges Court and Lady Fiona’s hospitality make a visit to this lovely bed and breakfast well worthwhile. For anyone with an interest in intelligence history, it is a piece of heaven.

Bridges Court is a beautiful old house and Fiona is a most welcoming host. The rooms are located on the top floor but we soon got used to the rather steep stairs leading up to them, and the beds were extremely comfortable. Fiona was so kind to provide us delicious full English breakfasts very early each day and couldn't have been more helpful generally. Hopefully we will be back again for another stay one day.

Wish I could say our stay at Bridges Court was as lovely as the village it is in, but I can't.
We stayed here for one night and wish we had chosen elsewhere nearby.
What was wrong with our stay?
Rooms had been overbooked and we were given a room in an extension with no hairdryer, no en-suite (in fact we had to share this with other people and it wasn't clean - and had to use some random shampoo/soap that belonged to someone else), no water/tea/coffee and twin beds (neither of which were comfortable and we both had a sleepless night).
We met some fellow guests who told us in their room (which did have en-suite) there were half used bottles of water.
Breakfast was the only saving grace of the stay, although I wouldn't say it was remarkable, and neither would I recommend staying here just to eat in the morning.
Some people might think the opportunity of having your breakfast cooked by a Lady would make up for the errant English eccentricity, but then some people might also like the Emperor's new clothes.
Also, photos of Bridges Court are out of date. When we booked we thought it might be nice to take advantage of the swimming pool as weather was decent, however it resembled a swamp not the blue tinged clear water in the photos.
Despite having our contact details (email/mobile/etc) we were not informed of overbooking so it did not give us a chance to book elsewhere.
We rarely manage an evening away, so staying here was a big disappointment.

we have just returned from 2 nights stay at Bridges Court unfortunately we were not lucky enough to get a refurnished room. We had a double room which was not en suite. the bath room was next to the room there wasn't a shower only a bath which was a little inconvenient and the lock on the bathroom door did not work. The only hanging space in the bedroom was 4 hooks on the back of the bedroom door. one bedside lamp didn't work and the shade kept falling off the other one. I have never seen so may dead flies and cobwebs. We did not find breakfast very enjoyable as there was a very limited choice. Overall we did not enjoy our stay and thought it very overpriced. We would not stay there again

We recently stayed with some friends, occupying all the rooms. First impressions were good but when shown to our (second) floor rooms were surprised at the steep staircase with sharp winders. It would be difficult, to say the least, for elderly persons to negotiate then with a large suitcase.
The TV in one room didn’t function and when this was mentioned to the owner, she said “Oh yes, I never know how to switch it on” but nothing further was done. A remote control in another room didn’t work and it was discovered that the batteries had corroded some time age.
We were surprised to see dead flies etc on some window sills.
However, the breakfasts were very good.

Thank you for your review. The staircase to the top floor is steep but I always offer to take people’s suitcases up for them so it hasn’t been a problem. Re the television, I’m sorry that it didn’t work but I did offer the use of the drawing room with television although I realise that that isn’t necessarily as convenient as watching it in your bedroom. The dead flies are removed daily if there are any but it’s an old house and I apologise if some more had appeared. I’m glad you enjoyed the breakfasts!

A completely harmonious experience is to be enjoyed at Bridges Court.
One feels welcome to all the house has to offer-a beautiful house redolent of history embedded in its garden and landscape.
Fiona is welcoming and solicitous and enjoys her guests!
Breakfast was lovely.
The price is way below its value.
This is a place to gain wonderful memories.

The rooms are a good size, with good lighting and very comfortable. The host (Fiona) is extremely accommodating and friendly and the place has a very relaxed and warm atmosphere. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in the area now I've been there.
Also has a tennis court and swimming pool!

The house, owner and breakfast are 10/10 but my colleague and I were staying on the top floor rooms and the sheets we felt weren't that clean. I had to clean the bath before I ran it as it was grubby. The tea tray and window were dusty and mouldy. Such a shame, can't believe its a Sawdays b and b.
No hair dryer in the room, and when phoned/tried to phone the owner no response.

I'm so sorry you felt that way. All the sheets are washed and ironed before being put on the beds. The bath had been cleaned too. As regards the hair dryer, the one in your room must have been removed but there was one in your colleague's room. I was in the house and would have been happy to get you a hair dryer if you had come and asked.

We stayed here over the Bank Holiday weekend - returning after previous relaxing stays. The bedroom was comfortable and quiet, showers hot with plentiful water, and breakfast fantastic (including the vegetarian one!). We look forward to returning again - next time we will definitely explore the swimming pool! Thank you so much Fiona!
