Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a round North Island road trip, easily one of the best campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Tucked away down a short access road, a short distance from Opunake township, the campground is very well sheltered and has a fantastic range of facilities, which were all spotlessly clean and very well maintained. In fact the faciilties seemed overly large and well appointed for the size of the campground, which is a good thing !! ie- no queues for anything. There was a large kitchen, a tv room, washing room with modern machines, and huge showers with great water pressure. To our surprise, the camp has a range of accommodation, its not tents only, they have caravans, bunk rooms, and even very modern self contained units with 2 rooms, toilet, shower etc, very classy for a campground. The hosts, Shelley and Julian were extremely friendly and helpful, check in - check out was fast and efficient, you always got the impression this was a well managed and well maintained campground. The camp has a great holiday family atmosphere, theres even a huge paddling pool for kids and a playground, and it was always quiet after 10pm, couldn't ask for more. There are also some amazing clifftop walks at both ends of the beach, with great gardens and views over the old wharf.
Opunake doesn't look like much when you first drive into the town, but as its only a 10 minute walk from the campground, we explored a little and discovered a great little NZ town, its got great cafes, (try Arty Tartz for breakfeast 10/10 !) , a magnificent old theatre showing current movies, bars, restaurants, op shops, we loved the place. Plus it had the cheapest gas of our whole trip at $2.01 a ltr. If you are planning a trip around the New Plymouth - Whanganui area, stop at this campground for a few nights, well worth the stop, easily the best campground we have ever stayed at. Will certainly return again.

We were lucky enough to visit in mid february when the schools had gone back so the camping ground was not crowded and we were able to choose our spot. I expect it is a hive of activity in the summer. The facilities were modern and clean but the shower was very annoying. The shower worked for only about 10 seconds at a time. It is very hard to take a shower in such short bursts and it can feel very chilly. I understand the need to conserve water but this was extreme. Apart from that annoyance we liked the site very much. The town is quite a lot higher up than the beach so it is a bit of a pull up the hill. The first time we went up we got onto the wrong track and it took us a while to find the shops but coming back we found a much shorter route. My husband enjoyed a good walk along the coastal track and is very pleased with the jandals he bought at the camp. The children's play area was getting plenty of happy use.

We love staying at Opanake Beach Kiwi Holiday Park, having the beach, a playground and paddling pool so close is amazing for the children. The facilities are always lovely and clean and Julian and Shelley are so friendly and welcoming.
We've stayed in a lot of campgrounds around New Zealand and the friendly helpful and welcoming service makes this our favourite spot to stay.

Great location just over the dunes to Opunake Surf Beach. Park had unfortunately received a lot of rain in preceding days that limited site availability, as they were trying to allow the ground to dry out and not get tyre ruts and mud everywhere. Facilities were fairly clean, but basic, really annoying shower set-up was the push button plunger timer affair with no temperature control, so if you don't like a luke warm shower, or a continuous one, tough bikkies!

+1
It is just literally in front of the beach, great place for the whole family in the quiet small town. We got a nice and full equipped cabin, clean ensuite shower, small but complete kitchen, comfy double bed and bunk bed, and flat screen TV and mini fridge, with open deck facing to the beach and west where the sun is set. Children play ground and small swimming pool are part of the facilities. Friendly and cheerful owner Shelly and helpful Julian when we had a problem with wi-fi connection, all good.

Fantastic location for those who enjoy surf. The township is within easy walking distance and there are a few coastal walks too.
We stayed in a basic cabin. This included very basic cooking utensils for use in camp kitchen but a couple items were missing which we asked for and got.
Double bed quit hard and I ended up with a sore back and didn't sleep well.
Good for a short stay but I would bring a tent for a longer stay.

We stayed in the new two-bedroom cabins and it was perfect for our needs. The separate sleeping spaces and living space was great when the little one went to bed. Wonderful shower, great little kitchenette and the deck was lovely to sit on and watch the kids running around.

Have settled on Opunake as the place for summer holidays - great location, good food options and shop nearby, some surf and great amenities. Particularly useful that you can go tenting or, if available, use the option of cabins. Always clean and well appointed, and the staff are brilliant.

Just wondering if you are pet friendly?
Thanks :)

Hello Sam, I personally love animals... Unfortunately the park is on council land and they have a no Dog policy on beach.
