Was perfect for a fall visit to Cumberland with my best friend. At only $89 per room per night, we were able to get rooms directly across the hall from one another and share a bath. Very clean and comfortable. We stayed 2-nights, and if not for weather, we would've stayed a 3rd.

Only issue encountered: during the pandemic, there's no office staff on-site. At one point, I had to get something out of my car and left my key and phone in my room. Since the inn's doors lock at night, I couldn't get back in. It was 20 minutes until my friend realized I was down there, and there is a sketchy element from the liquor store down the block. I was a bit rattled. Maybe put a "did you remember your key?" sign near the doors. Regardless, I hope to stay here again.

Stayed here 1 night while biking Pittsburgh to DC and had the best night of sleep during our 4 night/5 day trip. The building appears to be from 1870-1900, with 10 ft ceilings and original hardwood floors. Everything was pristine clean. Shared bathrooms were fine.

They have secure overnight storage for bikes and rags to wipe off daily grime.

We selected this hotel because of its history. We loved the idea of staying in a place built in the 19th century. This place is well suited to a certain type of traveler. For example, there is garage storage for the many cyclists who visit the area. The rooms were quite clean. We stayed in a room where you had to enter the hall to get to the bath. The bath would have been shared if the other room using it was rented to the same party. As we were alone, the sharing room was taken out of service so the bath was private. Some rooms have attached private baths. There is a lounge area with coffee and tea available anytime. If friends/family are traveling together, the lounge is a bonus for gathering. Disappointments included the stained carpet on some stairs and small bath towels. As some stairs were polished wood, leaving stained carpet on some of the stairs seems a poor choice. The b&b vibe comes partly because the staff is not usually on site, but is available by text or phone. Also, because of the historic nature of the building, there are many steps and stairs. There are some workarounds if stairs are an issue. Discuss at booking to be sure you can be accommodated. Overall, we enjoyed the stay. Very inexpensive.

The Cumberland Inn has the potential to be a quite charming place to stay, in a decent location. Unfortunately the execute just isn't there. From heavily soiled carpets and peeling paint to failing door locks this just doesn't rise to level of being considered by any but the most budget conscious traveler.

We had booked two rooms w/ a private bath. Unfortunately, the lock to the bathroom was heaving damaged, preventing entry. Based on damage, there have been many occurrences for folks to try to break into the bathroom, so it is surprising that it just hasn't been fixed. After calling the property manager, the response was simply "use another bathroom". No apology, no explanation, and no fixing the lock. So the alternate bath was only private in the event the other rooms had not been reserved.

This inn is hardly “luxury”. The outside of the building has charm and our room, the Eliza, was nicely decorated, if a bit spartan.
That is where the good news ends. We were texted contactless check-in instructions by David. Contactless check-in may be convenient, but I think in this instance it means “lazy”. We did not see or hear an employee during our visit. We were told to text the number with any issues, which we did when we realized that the dirty towels from the previous guest were still on the floor of our bathroom and we had no clean towels. By check out the next morning, no one had responded to our text message requesting clean towels.
Additionally, the guests above us appeared to be moving furniture at 4 am, but given that there was no response to our earlier text about towels, we didn’t bother escalating the issue.
While I prefer to support local businesses, I cannot recommend the inn to other travelers based on our lackluster experience.

We never saw any staff, but communication was easy and pleasant. We made use of the small dining area and appreciated (but did not use) the common 'lounge' area, which appeared quite nice. Nice big room with tub chairs. Interestingly, room lights controlled with a remote. Parking was convenient. No breakfast. Walking distance to downtown.

Our room was clean and comfortable and check in was easy since David texted us with info ahead of time. But the first thing that greeted us was a really dirty, gross carpet in the common room, a total turn off! Ugh! That’s not a great way to garner a favorable first impression with your guests. We were reluctant to use the coffee and tea station in the common room because of the soiled carpet.

We stayed here and had a nice comfortable room. There is no one onsite to assist us. Called “Contactless checkin”, which was ok, but when the coffee break room ran out of cups, there was no one to replace them before we left. Be careful which room you reserve. When they say the bathroom is private in the hall, it’s quite a ways from your room.

This review is a comparison between the two business since they share the same building and visitors to the Inn at Walnut Bottom may be interested in the changes.
Since the facility has re-opened I have stayed several nights.
The interior has been painted and there is new artwork on the walls. There is no longer a breakfast provided, or for that matter, any meals offered. In fact there is no private place to store personal refrigerated food. When it was the Inn at Walnut Bottom the staff would store and retrieve ones cold food. (At the Cumberland Inn and Spa I had a ten dollar food item disappear from the common refrigerator.)
As far as the traffic noise is concerned, the amount of noise depends on the room. The staff will provide a fan for no charge, which I use to block the traffic noise.
All in all, I find the Cumberland Inn and Spa a convenient and quaint place to stay at a reasonable price.

We normally stay at Hamptons and HI Express and that ilk of lodging. Based on reviews on this site, and frankly availability, we tried the Cumberland Inn and Spa. We are very glad we did! The manager and her granddaughter were very friendly and welcoming. They gave us the simple walking directions to the city center and recommended restaurants for dinner and breakfast which were both excellent.

The Inn is spotless, the bed comfortable, the shower great, Our queen size room was only $90; the nice chains were much higher. We were a 5 minute walk to the center of town for dinner.

We would stay here again!
