very friendly owner, however no heating underfloor as advertised, pool was green with algae hadn't been used for ages.
No instructions on using TV and had to get them over to show and it reverted when turned off so had to go through whole process each time. One pillow each provided.
Seal of fridge had grime and crumbs in it.
It would have probably been ok if the advertising for it was true.I went there because of the heating and the pool and neither was available. 200mb wifi given.

The owners German Shepard barked until 10.30pm both nights of our stay. Disrupted sleep as a result of inconsiderate road worker guests next door - when they did finally go to sleep, I heard them snoring through the wall later to be woken in the early hours with their trucks warming up for 15 minutes before finally leaving at 5.00am. Room stunk of cigarette smoke. The thermal pool which was to be the highlight of the stay for our son, was luke warm and very dirty. Only one bar of soap and one shampoo sachet was supplied for two people. No hot water at 7.30pm for a shower. Very expensive for what was offered. We wont be back.

I stayed in this hotel with some of my friends since we planned on going to White Island the next day. It is only a 1/2 hour drive to Whakatane. When we pulled up it looked really dodgy and was a bit hard to find we drove up and down the street three times so a better sign would be nice. It didn't look like much from the outside and we were skeptical.
We checked in and the guy was very friendly and made us feel at home. Our worrying was useless becasue our 2 bedroom room was actually really nice and clean. The pool was right next to our room which also looked a bit unappealing. But after dinner we spend the whole evening in the pool becasue it was so warm and had a great time.
There is not much to say about Kawerau itself, so we bought food to cook in our room and as we were returning back to our room the man from the desk which I assume was the owner was loading other guests into his van and asked us as well if we'd like to go to Karaoke. We didn't especially since we were hungry, but thought he was really nice.

Dirty, not properly equipped (e.g. camping elements for oven! empty salt shakers, missing frying pan, dirty dishes..etc..no proper place to hang clothes). We found this place expensive for what is was...no doubt because it is one of only two in Kawerau - would NEVER stay here again.

There are only two motels in Kawerau, we chose this one at Easter( visiting for a wedding) as it seemed closer to the town centre , slightly cheaper, and supposedly had a thermal pool which I really enjoy. Note that Google maps seems to have it in the wrong place. Coming in from Rotorua direction it is not far past the turn-off to the town centre, on the road you come in on. Well, when we went to check in, we asked if any of our friends were there for the wedding. No, said the woman,"maybe they're at the flash one" ! ( I'm like" there's a flash one?") That should have been a hint to go I think... anyway, we stayed. No thermal pool, the council has taken away the strength of the thermal heating or something... we pointed out the website still says there is a pool- "we keep telling them to update it", she says. But we may go to the Council-owned pool in town which is free- we actually did , the next day, and it was really good, but I digress. Unit is very old-looking with concrete block walls, just a kettle and microwave, No kitchen sink, you can't get the kettle under the basin taps properly to fill it, you wash your breakfast dishes and cups in the handbasin, yuck. And we think we had to ask for a teatowel. Not the very cleanest either. At least the bed was moderately comfortable. We had to laugh in the end, or you would cry. We did have fun at the wedding. I wouldn't recommend it- maybe give " the flash one" a go!

A very pleasant place to stay. We had three days there recently. Clean, and tidy. Room functional with comfortable beds. Friendly staff and a great location close to our meeting place. Handy to other areas of the Bay of Plenty for tripping around. Price very reasonable.

Only accommodation available. Old fashioned and used by people involved in the logging trade so noisy vehicles coming and going at odd hours. Units old style and some aspects need better attention to cleaning eg door of fridge round the seal was not clean. Bed was clean and very comfortable. Owner very friendly and welcoming. Plenty of parking. No breakdast available and Wi fi not very dependable.

We and other family members have stayed at this Motel previously and found it comfortable and convenient. So it was our pleasure to go there again in March 2014. Rooms have been recently refurbished and are of a very good standard. The friendly welcome and helpful advice on arrival made us feel 'at home' again.

This place is wonderful to stay at. The owners/staff are so friendly and helpful. When I told them I hadn't slept much due to leg cramps, because I cant sleep on mattresses with springs and that my bed at home had a latex mattress, the said next time to tell them when I book and they'll move a latex mattress (a single) into the unit before I get there. The pool was great!

Oh yeah. Be careful of where you buy food in Kawerau. I had been recommended The Golden Horse Chinese takeaways. So I bought a smorgasbord selection and took it back to my unit to eat after my wonderful swim in the Thermal Pool.
I showered before I sat down to what should have been a wonderful meal. However apparently the Golden Horse cooks had soaked (over soaked) all the cut vegetables in salt. The salt had seeped into the broccoli, cabbage, carrots etc, making the meal totally inedible.
I did return the dish with remaining food (almost full) to the Golden Horse next morning and put it on the bench complaining had they put some chemicals in their food that shouldn't be there. They happily returned my money and told me about the over soaking. My reply is next time I'd be asking them were the veges safe! I can still 'taste' those veges when I think about them and shudder. Luck for me I'd brought some bananas with me and had them for dinner.

I've decided to go to the Indian Restaurant next time.
