The hotel staff were all very courteous and helpful. Lucia and all of the waiters were eager to make any accommodations necessary. The housekeepers were also excellent at keeping everything clean and replenishing anything that was needed. Everyone treated us with excellent manners and respect.

Great breakfasts at Beloved! With great service too.
Privileged beach area was problematic in that lounge chairs were scarce, and although service was there, it could have been better. The beach was cleaned of seaweed on a regular basis.
We found the theater seating very uncomfortable, not having back supports in a bleacher like environment.
Despite these issues, the staff treated us well, and we had a wonderful holiday.

We are half way through our trip at the Catalonia Privileged Maroma resort and we are loving every minute of it. My wife and I want to take a moment to thank the staff at Alegria Spa. Brenda does the bookings and is so friendly and helpful and assists in making the best choice for yourself for your personal massage. Then there is the Massage Therapist Liliana, She is a Gem at this resort and I am so thankful to her. Over the last 5 days. I had two different treatments with her and my back pain and mobility has greatly improved. Thank you/Muchas Gracias Liliana, you are definitely an asset to this resort.

Now that we are back to California, it is time to share our opinion about Catalonia Privileged Maroma.

It happened that our stay at Catalonia Playa Maroma in 09/2022 coincided with the record 10-day heatwave in our state, so not being in California in 116 degrees weather was already a big reward!

This year we came back to CPM after a 5-year break. We were looking for information that would help us to make a decision but surprisingly there were not that many reviews online. Maybe because it is small hotel and those who know how great it is want to keep it for themselves?!

So, here it goes.

The premises: very green, very clean and very shady! If you have problems with direct sunshine and heat - this is a place. The hotel designers preserved so much nature at this place - it is just amazing. You do not get the feeling of massive concrete structure pressing down on you, instead you are walking in the shade of the evergreens with many small wild animals casually crossing you path. Still, the territory is very clean and the gardeners work hard every day keeping it clean.

The beach: Maroma beach is one of the best beaches in Cancun/Playacar area. On the days we were there seaweeds were coming daily, but they were cleaned up as they came. The beach is also shady, with plenty of coconut palm trees and there is no need to get up early in the morning, “reserving” you palapas or the beach lounge chairs. There are plenty of them!

The restaurants: here I will have to say that the buffet food was not what it used to be, before the pandemics, but they are trying hard to satisfy all the tastes. My honest opinion, upgrade to Privileged - you will not regret it. The “a la carte” breakfasts and lunches at Bloved, which are available for Privileged, guests are great and the personnel is fantastic. Thank you, Janet, Jose, Alejandra, Quirino and all others! For the dinner, their menu is also good and the people are great: we wanted to thank Nephtali, Brandon, Mary Carmen!

From other restaurants we put “Grill” as number 1 ( Alexander, Carlos, Arely, chefs Jose and Erik), but we also loved the Japanese restaurant “Ayami” (thank you, Eleazar, Rocio, Gerardo and Elizabeth), Italian restaurant “Toscana” (where we met our old friend Armando Cuevas, Rodrigo Manzo, Hanna, Geovanni, Juan, Theodore). We ate couple times at “Adelita” and were pleasantly surprised by their menu and loved the people working there, thank you Secundino, Cittaly, Juan, Rocio. All I can say- the dinners were great and satisfying, and served with respectful attitude. No food poisoning or any other problems at any restaurants! We skipped Terrace, we’re not much of tapas lovers, so nothing to say there.

The rooms: the buildings are not that new, but our room was remodeled and it was cleaned daily, no mold, no smell, no pests, no issues. The air conditioner worked as designed. We stayed in a Privileged room, since we booked Privileged Honeymoon room and we were happy with it. We loved our cleaning lady’s service. Thank you, Magali! You work hard and you are appreciated.

A few words about the reception service. We wanted to especially thank Christian, the Reception Manager. He said on the first and only time we met: my job is to make you happy and you outdid yourself! Because of you we may come back again and again! Thank you to Rafael from Guest Services and Jessica (Guest Services Manager) for your help!

We also had a brief meeting with Tatiana, the General Manager, a very lovely and kind person, while she was observing the work of the restaurant personnel one morning. She gave us some of her busy time and listened to our suggestions, again we had no real complaints! Thank you, Tatiana, you run the place very efficiently!

A very important note on the guests of the hotel. I think they were mostly from Europe this time: we communicated with a couple from Nederland and spoke to a few Portuguese couples, there were Italians, Englanders, Spaniards, etc. Surprisingly, not many drunk and loud people at this location. OK, maybe some people from England had a few extras due to the Queen Elizabeth’s death, but that is understandable!! (The raw of tequila shots in front of one man from GB shocked me, but he survived!)

The entertainment was away from our building and we did not have to wake up @2:00 am by drunk people coming back late to their rooms, like in many other places.

So, if you like a quite hotel with the great green location on one of the best beaches in Mexico - go to Catalonia Playa Maroma! And go as Privileged Guest! You will enjoy it.

First off would give this normally a 3,5 star if option available. This is the 4th resort I have been to in Mexico and countless others around the Caribbean and Europe. Spent 1 week here from New Year’s Eve. Arrived later in evening so checkin process was no wait. Fairly efficient however not a lot of details for how resort works and you need to figure that out more yourself. Bellboys were great (Jose and Rodrigo). Extremely friendly and great ambassadors for the hotel. They also helped with breaking large bills from ATM in hotel that only spits out 500 peso bills. It is a Santander machine. Exchange seemed ok but they do charge a 34 peso fee for service (~1,75 USD) and also exchange rate they take 6%. Note the resort is not for those mobility challenged. A long 500m walk between the hotel lobby and pool area. Good for people looking for their 10,000 step days! But it was pleasant and nice environment with coati (lemurs) and othEr animals. Full marks for how they set the walking path up. New Year’s Eve party was also top notch. Well planned on the beach with fireworks, dancing, drinks, and party favours.

Hotel room we opted for privileged. The rooms were nice and big as advertised. Clean. And TV worked, bar fridge well stocked with water, soft drinks, beers. Shower/ bathroom good. Safe in room for valuables. Air conditioning did not work the way it should have in 1 of the rooms (we had 2 adjoining rooms), but was fine enough for sleeping and ceiling fan also helped. I called front desk to let them know about issue. They mentioned they would send maintenance right away. Not sure if anyone showed up but no change. Was not big enough issue to change rooms so just lived with. I mentioned again on a hotel survey 2 days later. No change. Mentioned on check-out where they apologized for inconvenience and said they would send someone there. Not sure if that is just being polite but would bet no change. Nice sized outside balcony but did not use. Groundskeeping was ok and being worked on. Since hotel was shut for almost 1 year believe a lot of catch up is occurring now. Beach was nice, but odour noticeable as mentioned in other posts if you go into the water. Water looks awesome and no sea urchins or other sea life to worry about as you walk into the water. Only nice sand.

Privilege status has a number of advertised benefits. One of them being 24 hr room service. Tried it out twice. 1 for breakfast and once at 11pm for a hotdog and salad snack. Both times it took almost an hour for food to arrive. Food arrived cold. I think they purposefully do a poor job at this service to discourage its use.

Restaurants/Food: primary food buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is Parajito. Good quality of food/ meat. Decent selection. But does not really change the options very much from day to day. Longest wait is usually omelette station at breakfast for 5-10 minutes. Staff try to keep up with filling up stations and cleaning surfaces. Hand sanitizer and plastic gloves to avoid transfer of germs but to be honest not too many guests were using these. Scan of temperature for people entering restaurant but this is more for optics than actual function. No one gets turned away. I will say that all staff wore their masks at all times, even in hot heat. They must have some kind of fear driven into everyone as it was strictly adhered to. As for tourists, reminders as you walk through the restaurants but other than that loosely followed. Would give it a 7.5/10 stars as far as buffet goes. Pastries could be fresher or perhaps they need a French trained pastry chef to up the game.

Trick with most AI resorts is to learn how it flows quickly to maximize the benefits. For restaurants that means booking in advance 3 days out. They do have a modernized QR scan for access to reservation system. Means each morning or at midnight you should make your booking for 3 days out. If not there is a system for talking to them about extra tables (either at guest services by the pool or at each restaurant around 5 pm) but we never went that route.

Toscana Tapas Spanish restaurant - excellent 9/10 stars. Food from central kitchen did come a little tepid at some times indicating they might prep in advance and serve as needed. But very tasty appetizers such as Calamari, olives, grilled veggies.

Ayumi Japanese restaurant - great sushi and teppanaki. 9/10 stars. Books up quickly.

Grill restaurant - steaks/ bbq. 6,5/10. The meat was cooked as requested to wellness however cuts of meat offered were not the best. From awful and hard to cut to some pieces being very tender and well marinated. Would opt for the picanha in the end as it seemed the best. Rib-eye and New York steak are not what one would expect. Appetizers tend to come fairly quick however you need to wait a long time for main meal.

Adelitos - Mexican 8,5/10. Nice and no line ups. All the Mexican and Spanish tourists likely wanted something different.

Italian restaurant 7/10 - did not try for dinner. But ordered pizza and pasta lunch one day. It was ok. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Pizza not terribly great.

Creperie - 8,5/10. Nice sweet and sour crepes. Ice cream. Likely lacking if you were French but ok.

BLoved - specialty restaurant only for Privileged. 8,5/10. Ate there only once for dinner and once for lunch as it was closed for a few days and other days booked solid. The times we did eat there the service and quality of food were good. Very small number of tables.

Beach chair and beach bed hogs and towel game like most resorts. Learn to live with it and in general enough chairs were around. Entertainment team was great. Tried getting everyone involved. Only 1 ping pong table with paddles and balls they keep locked up so not sure why more tables are not around for a resort this size. Beach activities like kayak, stand up paddle board, catamaran sailing were there but basically shut down the entire time. Opened only 1 day out of the 7. They have a flag system for the beach to indicate conditions but I think they only have a red flag. If you do want a kayak or sail boat the paperwork is meant to discourage and time given is also meant to discourage. A real disappointment. They seem to only want to upsell the motorized sport options.

Night show was well done and highly enjoyed. 9/10 for that part. Professional dancers who put 110% into each show.

Used massage services at resort. Excessively expensive for Mexico but massage ladies did a nice job. If looking for cheaper head into Playa del Carmen. Like all thinks on resort, you can expect to pay through the nose for convenience. But keep in mind it’s a vacation.

Overall a good resort. Staff tries really hard. Just wish management in general at Mexican resorts would pay their staff more, especially considerIng the amount they charge guests for a room and food/drinks. So definitely tip as they really make so little. 1000pesos (50 USD) every 2 weeks for most staff is all they make. Generally I was giving 50-100 pesos each time as I know I can afford it and makes such a difference in these peoples lives. For really nice restaurant experience a bit more. They share tips as a team in restaurants or at bar areas so it will be split.

Covid testing available at the resort. Antigen with quick turnaround and PCR with a longer time. Lots of options available in Playa del Carmen as well but same price. $22-25 for antigen test. $80-90 for PCR. Scan QR code at guest services building by pool area. My only advice is you should take a self test kit with you prior to taking your official test and check result. You also should watch and ask to see the entire process to ensure you are seeing your actual result. Recall, everything in Mexico is commercialized and everyone is out to make their dollar from the tourists. Doctors, nurses are no different unfortunately so although on vacation be sceptical and be observant. And keep in mind there is a price for everything that is for sale! Oh and as far as tourist departure tax at airport goes you either already paid for it at hotel so no need to pay at the airport. Just walk right past the “mandatory” signs as with most things in Mexico this is a gimmick and opportunity for one more inventive business to try and get some more money out of the tourist. No one checks which makes me feel this is indeed a cash grab.

I think it was fair for the money and high season that I went however would likely keep looking for a different resort with more snorkelling or water sports available. I stayed about 12 years ago at the Hotel Catalonia Mayan Riviera resort and overall found that resort at the time higher rated. However time does that with my memory and I was at a different stage as well with small kids. Good luck to all with your choices. You won’t be disappointed if you come here, remember it is all about expectations and for a middle of the road resort it delivers that. Just don’t expect the 4 Seasons (as you are not paying that) and you will be fine!
