The Hut at Wood Pigeon Lodge allows you the chance to stay at a romantic rural retreat where no other offers the same. You have views of the Tongariro World Heritage area and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from your windows at a location away from the noise of a busy tourist village. A cosy fire treats you on a cool night and the views offers NZ at its best. My promise is that you wont be disappointed.

We were a group of 5 adults and 5 teenagers. We stayed to ski at Whakapapa and it was an ideal location.
Tim is a fabulous host. The barn sleeps 10 easily and it has fabulous character.
We enjoyed being off the grid with our teens. They played cards, helped with dishes and had to be considerate of each other in a small space. With great friends and delicious food it couldn't have been a better famiky break away from the city.
The location is 5 minutes from a mini supermarket and some restaurants and bars. Only 10 minutes to the Chateau and 35 minutes to Ohakune for a change of scenery too.
There are board games, theres an outdoor bbq under a verandah for cooking and the second bathroom is a godsend for a group of more than 6 people.
I loved that the accomodation includes linen and towels and cleaning. Everything has been considered here. Great cooking facilities, two fridges.
Highly recommend this venue, lovely hosts, the barn was so lovely and warm for a winter stay. We'd love to go back in summer.

Can highly recommend this property. Tim was the perfect host and came to welcome us on arrival. We stayed in the Barn which was huge! Certainly more than two people needed, but it was the only option left. Communication was good with Tim and he was quick to remedy an issue we had in the house. My original email request was made on their “online query form”, which went into his junk email folder. So suggest you email direct if you want a response. The kitchen was well equipped. We appreciated their commitment to the environment, with separator food scraps, recycling and general rubbish. They had a good selection of games and jigsaw puzzles (most with pieces missing!). There is a lovely outdoor area to sit, and the washing machine came with washing powder, which was great. The Barn is better suited to larger groups, but it was a great place to stay. Would not hesitate to come back to this whisper quiet location!

Tim is a great host and this is the best location to explore the area.
We stayed in the Hut and loved it. Perfect for couples. View of the mountain from your bed. Warm shower. Fire going when you arrive. Tim will even light it for you if you are late getting home.
Can't beat that.

Great views of the volcanos of Tongariro. The Hut was gorgeously decorated and had all the facilities you needed including cooking utensils. Tim was friendly and accommodating. Didn’t have the fire going being autumn but it would be lovely there in the cooler months with a log fire and snow.

While there is no doubt that this is a beautiful property, in a beautiful part of the country - my family will not be back. Shortly after we arrived, Tom the owner popped in to introduce himself but was distractedly looking past me and said "there's more than 5 people staying aye?". I replied "no, there are still 5". The next day he turned up again and said "there are definitely more than 5 of you here aye." To which I replied "no, there is definitely not." and itemised our family members by name. This is the first time I have been made to feel like a liar or a cheat on my holiday. If you had checked the number of seats in our car Tim, you would have seen that more than 5 people would have been impossible. It's a shame that the possibility of missing out on $20 was so important to you, when we paid over $600 for the stay anyway.

Response from TimAndEwan, Owner at Wood Pigeon Lodge
Responded 25 May 2016
We often get people booking then turning up with more people, so it is not unusual for us to ask for the numbers actually staying. Sorry if this upset you. No insult or questioning of your honesty was intended. We are genuinely distressed that you left our accommodation with such feelings.

This really is a magical place - staying in the Hut feels like dropping into a older, quieter, richer time and place. Vintage furniture and kitchen accesories, views to pastures and volcanoes beyond, bird song and baaing lambs, the perfume of freshly cut garden flowers, The bed is very comfortable, the shower hot and with good pressure, the kitchen equipped with everything you need to make gourmet meals. We stayed three nights and ate in every night We had time to take several national park hikes, including the Alpine Crossing as well as relax and explore the pastures and woods around Wood Pigeon Lodge. I also enjoyed reading about the history of the area in the books and journals in the Hut. Wood Pigeon Lodge is easy to find and a short drive to Tongariro National Park. It is also handy as a midway point between the South Island and Auckland. We were able to take the 10:30 AM ferry from Picton and arrive at the Lodge by 7 PM even with a grocery stop. Wood Pigeon Lodge really has the best blend of peaceful and private with close access to Tongariro and wonderful and helpful hosts. We couldn't recommend it more.

We knew this was gonna be the highlight of our trip and it only was confirmed. We were very much looking forward to the hut and in reality, the place was even better than on the pictures. Just imagine a little heavenly place on the top of a hill, that gets light first and last in the day, with an amazing view on the mounts Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu, and a setting in green, peace and birds singing. Tim and Ewan put a lot of love and passion in decoration both the hut and the barn. We were lucky to try both as the hut was only available the first 2 days (we stayed 4). I can only recommend it to anybody seeking peace, relaxation and an inspiring place.

Planned to do the Tongariro Crossing 2 mums and 3 girls - Dec 2011 - weather turned nasty so ended up doing the Taranaki Falls and the Tama Lakes instead. Still a great experience. . The Barn was fabulous - beautiful views and very cosy. Tim lit a fire for our return and was a perfect host. The homemade marmalade which I took home is yum!!! Flat battery when we were leaving but Tim to our rescue jump started our car - nothing a problem - going back to stay in April and try the Tongariro again. My daughter just wants to go hang out at the Barn - wants to take her Dad here for skiing !!! - as she loved it so much!!! Comfy beds and hot showers !!!! And yes it was the highlight of our trip. Beautiful countryside and views from the Barn. We will be back.

The beautiful & perfect rainbow arching over the mountains and plains on our way to the Barn, was an amazing introduction to the serenity and beauty we would enjoy on our overnight stay there. The Barn is quaint and has been lovingly set up and maintained by it's Owners. It is well equipped with everything you would need. We communicated with Tim and he was a dream to deal with - reliable, welcoming, warm & friendly. The best part for us was the wide open space and the gorgeous surroundings. The kids had a great time running around enjoying the sweet mooing cows, the frisky lambs and the bunny surprises around the Barn. It is an experience we would recommend.

We stayed in the Hut for two nights in October with a view to doing the Tongaririo Alpine Crossing walk while we were there - as it happened the weather was not good so the walk was delayed, but on the plus side that meant we spent a bit more time than planned in the Hut, which was great fun. We stayed as a couple, but there was additional bedding to cater for up to 5, though that would be a bit of a squeeze! The kitchen was well appointed and we ate at home both nights - unless you want to drive, that is the only option as the property is relatively remote, but that suited us fine. The Hut has been thoughtfully decorated to give it a retro feel, and the fire is the definite highlight! Our hosts were very welcoming and we enjoyed walking around the property and meeting all the animals We would definitely stay again if we were in the area - as the hosts warn, there aren't many shops nearby that open late, so come prepared if you are arriving late!

Room Tip:Two couples would be a bit claustrophobic in the Hut if you spent a decent amount of time indoors...

Yes we have a washing machine and laundry detergent that you may use at no extra cost. We do not have a clothes drier as we believe in drying either outside on the line on fine days or inside on a clothes hoist, rather than using electricity to dry clothes. There is a clothes hoist for this purpose in all of our accomodation units.

"The Barn is a large open space, with two separate bedrooms and many beds upstairs in an airy loft, and there is not much soundproofing. The large beds were very comfortable, but the mattress on the single bed upstairs was in need of improvement."
