Just 5 stars all the way! Wonderful service and a beautifully clean room with all the services you’d wish for in an apartment. Yummy breakfast with plenty of very personally touches we will definitely be back. All the photos don’t do this motel justice and would highly recommend to all those thinking of staying.
We cycled the trail in the less popular direction (Middlemarch to Clyde) so the Waipiata Motel was our first night on the rail. Declaration up front; I used to work with the wonderful Jen back in our book publishing days. Knowing her exacting standards, I was confident that her Waipiata Motel would be a first class experience and we were not disappointed. Jen was a terrific host - her flair and her longstanding love of Otago shine through in everything she does. The rooms in this wee motel are warm, comfy and beautifully done, with wonderful local touches. Jen's continental breakfast was perfect. More than enough to set us up for a day's cycling. Everything fresh and tasty and presented with charm. Loved that it was all in the fridge when we got back from dinner, ready for us to help ourselves when ready the next morning; none of that awkward uncertainty around whether your breakfast will be on time when you have a preset pick up time! In short, can't recommend the Waipiata Motel highly enough.…
This was our favourite accommodation on the rail trail and surpassed our expectations. The photos do not do it justice. The rooms are comfortable and we enjoyed the view from the deck. The furnishings of natural fibre and sheep skins suit the environment. I was doing the rail trail with my teenage son and was grateful we could have two beds as many of the places along the trail didn’t offer two beds. We were greeted with a lovely homemade afternoon tea and breakfast was a perfect start to the day. I highly recommend staying at Jen’s place.
My expectations weren't high based on the name, but gosh, Jen and the Waipiata Motel completely over-deliver. A Lockwood-style building with generous room size, some lovely feature furniture and lots of comfy sheepskins and woollen blankets respect the sense of place. Breakfast provisions are in the fridge and will fuel hungry cyclists for hours and Jen is a great host and easy conversationalist. Enjoying the view from the deck with a cup of tea and home baking was perfect. The pet lambs were a bonus too. 'Motel' doesn't paint a picture of the personalised excellence in hosting here - highly recommended and probably the highlight of our Trail.
Jen was the most wonderful host! While she may be a new(ish) motelier she is a true natural at making her motel beautiful and comfortable plus ensuring that all her guest feel welcome and relaxed. Nothing is too much to ask of Jen and my family and I are so appreciative of her hospitality as we came of the Rail Trail looking like drown rats. From the delicious afternoon tea, lending us her car so we could go for dinner that night to an amazing breakfast that set us up perfectly for another day on the trail (in the rain) - I highly recommend a stay at Waipiata Motel.
