Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A group of 10 British friends and family did the rail trail cycle route over 3 days in Feb with the motel being the final night of the trip, absolutely fantastic, rooms spotless, hosts Jen and Grant really friendly and helpful, wonderful location. Food was fantastic from the homemade banana bread, lemon honey and ginger breakfast juice and avocado on toast, rhubarb compote....yum!
Definitely a great place to stay and loved feeding the sheep too!

The pictures of this wee motel do not do it justice. The linens, knick knacks, crockery, toiletries, everything is top notch, considered and gorgeous. You can see the new owner really values style and quality. She was super welcoming and went above and beyond to help us and make us feel at home, including letting the kids feed the sheep and helping to clean up our biking gear that was wet and muddy. The continental breakfast was generous and the most delicious we have had on our travels. We wish we were staying so much longer. We would love to come back here.

When everyone is able to make plans again, and if you’re a cyclist making plans to ride the Otago trail, make this motel one of your overnight destinations. Just a lovely warm feeling from the moment you arrive which can be attributed to the attention and special touches provided by Jen. Rooms are nicely decorated with everything you need including a large ensuite bathroom, outdoor seating on the deck, fridge, comfy beds-(big plus) and TV. Jen provided us with a delicious continental breakfast and offered us hot cross buns as well. Really happy our accommodation on the last night of the trail was great!

We stayed 2 nights at the Waipiata Motel so we could have a rest day from the ORT. Jenn did everything she could to make the stay special from the well appointed rooms, providing the best freshly baked banana bread and even picking up our trail lunches from the Waipiata Hotel. Real hospitality.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Wawata. We absolutely loved having you all here. You'll be pleased you dodged the unseasonal snow we had a few days ago! Hope to see you down here again, exploring other hidden gems and experiences which the Mighty Maniototo offers. Best, Jen

My expectations weren't high based on the name, but gosh, Jen and the Waipiata Motel completely over-deliver. A Lockwood-style building with generous room size, some lovely feature furniture and lots of comfy sheepskins and woollen blankets respect the sense of place. Breakfast provisions are in the fridge and will fuel hungry cyclists for hours and Jen is a great host and easy conversationalist. Enjoying the view from the deck with a cup of tea and home baking was perfect. The pet lambs were a bonus too. 'Motel' doesn't paint a picture of the personalised excellence in hosting here - highly recommended and probably the highlight of our Trail.

We cycled the trail in the less popular direction (Middlemarch to Clyde) so the Waipiata Motel was our first night on the rail.
Declaration up front; I used to work with the wonderful Jen back in our book publishing days. Knowing her exacting standards, I was confident that her Waipiata Motel would be a first class experience and we were not disappointed.
Jen was a terrific host - her flair and her longstanding love of Otago shine through in everything she does.
The rooms in this wee motel are warm, comfy and beautifully done, with wonderful local touches.
Jen's continental breakfast was perfect. More than enough to set us up for a day's cycling. Everything fresh and tasty and presented with charm. Loved that it was all in the fridge when we got back from dinner, ready for us to help ourselves when ready the next morning; none of that awkward uncertainty around whether your breakfast will be on time when you have a preset pick up time!
In short, can't recommend the Waipiata Motel highly enough.

Thanks so much, Lesley. Needless to say, it was a complete pleasure, and very special, to have you stay here with us as former colleagues for several years. Your feedback means so much because You are such a perfectionist yourself. I feel so blessed to have always had the chance to work in roles over the years that I find enriching and stimulating; helping people to create their own stories and memories. Running the Motel is another one. I have always loved looking after people whether it be artists, authors or, now, exhausted Rail Trailers!

This was our favourite accommodation on the rail trail and surpassed our expectations. The photos do not do it justice. The rooms are comfortable and we enjoyed the view from the deck. The furnishings of natural fibre and sheep skins suit the environment. I was doing the rail trail with my teenage son and was grateful we could have two beds as many of the places along the trail didn’t offer two beds. We were greeted with a lovely homemade afternoon tea and breakfast was a perfect start to the day. I highly recommend staying at Jen’s place.

A warm, welcoming, and gracious stay. Waipiata Motel (might have a name change in the future) was this unassuming wonderful surprise on our Central Otago Rail Trail cycle tour. Jen welcomed us in off the dusty trail with kindness and fresh banana bread and fruit. Yum, hit the spot. The rooms are immaculately clean and beautiful, v Ralph Lauren country chic, gorgeous linens and decor. The next morning there's breakfast of homemade muesli, coffee, tea, avocado on toast, and this yummy fresh ginger lemon honey juice was outstanding. Be sure to stop here on your cycle tour, or stop in anyway even if you're not cycling through. A lovely experience.

We, like most others, stayed here for a night while riding the rail trail. We were the only ones that night and were a bit late in. The weather that day on the trail was poor and Jen was eagerly awaiting our arrival and could not have been more helpful. She assisted us cleaning our gear and even gave us another small gift which allowed us to get to the pub without getting wet. We were so very appreciative. Simply wonderful accommodation. Hope you enjoyed the red Jen.

Jen was the most wonderful host! While she may be a new(ish) motelier she is a true natural at making her motel beautiful and comfortable plus ensuring that all her guest feel welcome and relaxed. Nothing is too much to ask of Jen and my family and I are so appreciative of her hospitality as we came of the Rail Trail looking like drown rats. From the delicious afternoon tea, lending us her car so we could go for dinner that night to an amazing breakfast that set us up perfectly for another day on the trail (in the rain) - I highly recommend a stay at Waipiata Motel.
