Komako Peonies and Cottage Garden at Waipiata alongside the Otago Central Rail Trail is much more than just a night's accommodation, it really is the place to stay. Here is where you can spend a few days relaxing and recharging energy levels, or make your escape from hemmed in urban living for a weekend away from the madding crowd in the wide-open spaces of the 'Big Sky' Maniototo Plains.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Arrive at our accommodation to be greeted by Heather and Grant our hosts. Such a warm welcome, a really lovely couple after a chat they showed us to our rooms, these were presented beautifully and the beds were so comfortable, the kitchen facilities were just what we need for our one night stay, with a separate toilet and shower/bathroom, couldn't have asked for a more pretty surrounding. After our transport to take us curling at Nasby didn't arrived we were offered a car for our use, such kindness.

my room was small, perfect and delightful. and just outside the door there were peonies and poppies rioting in the garden bed. our hosts Heather and Grant made us a wonderful dinner in their home, allowed us free range of the gardens and the peony fields and made us feel as though we were long lost family in for a visit

Our family of 5 had the pleasure of a visit to Waipiata during our time on the Rail Trail. We were greeted with a stunning garden, immaculate cottages and a fairy lit bathroom. Beautiful linen and a comfortable sleep after our day cycling. Thank you to Heather and Grant for their kiwi hospitality.

Hosts are welcoming and accommodating, but guests should be aware that the cabins are tiny and not insulated while the toilet and shower are across the yard. Fine for a night whilst on the Otago Rail Trail though.

Three of us ladies stayed a night here while biking the Otago Central Rail Trail recently. We were utterly delighted with every aspect of our stay. As we were the only group staying, we were generously upgraded to a cabin each, rather than having to share, for no extra cost. We loved the beautiful French provincial decor, luxurious linen, wonderful hot shower, flowers and the fragrance of flowers everywhere, friendly cat, nice continental breakfast and very friendly hosts, Grant and Heather. Heather provided tips on places to visit nearby, even offering the use of their car! - and we especially valued good information about an easier shortcut route for our biking sidetrip to Naseby. Did I mention the caravan "lounge" with DVD player and boardgames? We could quite easily have stayed a week! Thank you very much, Heather and Grant!

What a magical place and a stunning garden. Grant and Heather are fantastic hosts and go the extra mile. I would highly recommend it. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and had enormous character.

We two women cycling the Otago Rail Trail considered Komako Peonies and Garden Cottages one of the highlights of our trip. The peonies - a sea of colour - were in full bloom and so were most of the other flowers and shrubs in the beautifully landscaped and tended garden. Our host greeted us warmly and gave us excellent tips on what to do and see in the area. We took up her suggestions and went to Naseby, Hamilton’s Cemetery, and the Waipiata pub for a drink and excellent dinner. Our cottage at Komako was attractively decorated and we had a brilliant sleep in the quiet of the countryside. A generous breakfast awaited us when we awoke - especially appreciated the leaf tea and delicious yoghurt. Enjoyed the tour of the garden and drinking in the magnificent view of the distant mountain range and pastureland. Thank you to our host for giving us a real taste of the area and for making our stay so special.

We cycled the rail trail and booked the room in advance. Arriving very early we were welcomed and given a choice of charming rooms

The owner was generous in the extreme and I can only recommend this quirky country holiday let. The garden is beautiful as you would expect from the name

The toilet and kitchen are small but immaculate and adequate

Wonderful property after a day of cycling. Heather warmly welcomed us and was very hospitable. Great breakfast supplies and very relaxing. A visit to the pub for the venison pie is a must. A visit to the TB hospital is worth a side trip by car.
