Detailed Reviews
Tussock Lodge was our last night on the Otago rail trail. We had the room designed with a bathroom for the disabled. The shower flooring had issues but that didn’t detract from our stay. A welcome bed after a long cycle on the rail trail, including curling in Naseby. We had a pleasant walk to the Waipiata hotel for a delicious dinner.
The lodge was well appointed with great breakfast supplies and a ‘mini’ bar with an ‘honesty’ box system for payment. This place would be great for a family with four bedrooms with queen/king beds and also some rollaway beds.

What a wonderful place to stay! The bedrooms were very generous in size and the showers were hot and had good pressure. There was fantastic heating. The kitchen was spacious, with good breakfast food provided. There is plenty of space to relax and read your book, or admire the scenery. A shirt walk or cycle down to the Waipiata Hotel. Only downside is we didn’t stay here for longer!

Our second visit to Tussock Lodge when riding the Rail Trail. We were fortunate to be the only guests so had the whole place to ourselves. Mark is an excellent host. The Waipiata Hotel served the best chicken parmigiana and chips I've ever tasted throughout NZ and Australia! It was also the biggest serve. We will definitely return!

My daughter and I were very lucky to have Tussock Lodge to ourselves after looking for accommodation at the Waipiata Tavern. The owner was so obliging and welcoming considering we just turned up. He prepared our room and heated the lodge for us while we had dinner at the Waipiata Tavern. I recommend the lamb burger by the way - gourmet and delicious. The lodge was comfortable and warm with a nice view from the upstairs living room area and a big range of breakfast cereals, etc included. The starry sky at night was wonderful.

This lodge was superb in terms of space for a family of 7 and the location & scenery was beautiful. As advertised the beds were luxurious and the breakfast perfect. We weren't aware that the lodge was not 'sole occupancy' when booked by our tour providers, so just be aware when you are travelling with young children. The drainage system needs attention in the the showers, as we found a unpleasant smell was present in all three bathrooms after the showers were used. We loved the alpacas, and thank you Mark for a delicious meal and service at your pub!

Response from TussockLodgeW, Owner at Tussock Lodge Waipiata

Hi 986trudiem, thank you for the review, we're glad that you enjoyed your time with us, I'm unsure on what the drain odours was, as this wasn't mentioned to us, the septic tank was emptied on the day that you arrived, so we can probably put the smell down to this, as it hasn't been a problem that has been mentioned. Tussock Lodge Waipiata is available to small and large groups, and if you like sole occupancy you can book the remaining room/ rooms to guarantee this, this is an issue to discuss with your tour company. We look forward to seeing you again when you are in our little part of the world, All the best for 2020 and thank you for choosing to stay at Tussock Lodge Waipiata Regards Mark

4 of us stayed here with our 5 horses in the paddock next door. Our rooms and the central lounge were immaculately clean, the beds are soooo comfortable with triple sheeting and high quality sheets. Strong hot showers and fluffy towels.
There were so many small details that made us feel welcome.
The breakfast was generous and delicious. We would all love to come back. Highly recommended and don’t forget to go to the pub for a great dinner!
We could see why locals knew we would enjoy it.

We were a group of 8 so we booked the entire lodge. It is spacious, clean, warm and has everything you want. We all hung out together in the lounge and cooked the eggs provided for breakfast in the morning.
If the weather was warmer we would have sat out on the large picnic table out the front of the property.
There is a washing machine and dryer - brilliant.
TV's in every bedroom and the lounge.
THE BED'S WERE FANTASTIC - showers great too!
Nothing bad to say

We loved our stay at the lodge. The lodge was immaculate and there was a washing machine available and drying racks. The rooms and beds (best beds on the trail) were generous and cosy, breakfast was lovely and Mark had also left us fresh eggs which were delish. A great space for relaxing and putting up feet after a day cycling. We had dinner a short walk down the road at the hotel which was amazing too. Mark was friendly and made us feel very welcome.
