We stayed for two nights in October and wished we could have stayed longer. The owners offer great communication from the time of the first inquiry, and even though they are close by, we never got, or needed, to meet them given how seamless the arrival instructions were. Monty their dog did come and say "Hi" and have a pat though. The accommodation is really well thought out and had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. There were numerous seating options (all very comfortable) and of course, the outdoor baths were a real hit (steering up at stars never gets old). The kitchen is really well-appointed - just bring your ready-to-eat type meals and snacks and you may not need to leave if you don't want to. The cottage is very sheltered and private too. Would definitely stay again. Can also recommend the walk up Mt Sunday, Breakfast at the Staveley Store and The Dubliner Pub in Methven.…

We had a wonderful weekend staying in the Alford cottage. A cute space that had everything we needed, a fully equipped kitchen and a very comfy bed. On our first night the weather wasn't too great so we lit the indoor fire which created a lovely, cosy ambience. The second night we watched the stars come out in the outside baths which was stunning. Each morning we made the easy two minute drive to the Staveley store to enjoy a good coffee and a scone. The cottages are close to Methven and also the many beautiful walks in the area. Highly recommend for a couples getaway from Christchurch. We loved it.

A group of 2 couples stayed in both cottages at Red Cottages. We loved in and had such a wonderful time. We ensured we availed ourselves of all of the facilities - outdoor baths, table tennis, darts, home movie theatre in the shearing shed, roaring fires...the list goes on. Both cottages were beautiful although rather different in style and we simply enjoyed every moment of our stay. Nigel and Myriam were such thoughtful hosts, around to welcome us, unobtrusive throughout but in touch when they needed to be. The Cafe at Staveley became our new local, great coffee and food and goodies to take home. We went to ski at mount hutt and the cottage was very conveniently located for this. However, plenty of great walking in the local area. The most telling sign of a great place is that you dont want to leave the place whilst you are staying there. We stayed 3 nights and after the first night decided we wanted to stay home for dinner - it was just wonderful - local venison on the BBQ purchased from the Staveley cafe, great red wine, Lord of the Rings ( locally filmed) in the shearing shed, blankies and a roaring fire. What could be better? I would HIGHLY recommend a stay at this great little place with wonderful hosts. Thanks to Myriam and Nigel for creating and sharing such a super wee spot.…

We've stayed in hundreds of places travelling the world, caves, shacks, hostels and sometimes a bit more upmarket and Alton Cottage at Red House in Staveley has got to be in our top 5. A delightful well furnished cottage with very comfy bed and fab open fire, but the star of the place is the woolshed cinema. The outside baths are pretty special too. Give yourself a treat, stock up on food, wine and bubble bath and chill out.

Myriam & Nigel could not have given us a better welcome, with the `welcome sign ` with our names on the cottage door & the lovely bottle of bubbly on the table for us. We had the smaller Red Cottage which was ideal, compact, but plenty of space for two guests, all amenities & both private & very quiet. The old sheep shearing shed cinema was good fun, we went three nights running. & finished all the pop corn! We passed on the two outside baths behind, but these would be great fun for many guests. Lovely local scenery, a very nice quality Restaurant (Stonechrubie) in Mt Somers, also a very friendly local (500m) cafe. All this combined with Nigel & Myriam being on hand, but never at all intrusive, they left us to enjoy ourselves, made this a lovely time for us both. We would most certainly look to return again, when we can. Many thanks to Nigel & Myriam.…

We had the most wonderful mini break staying in the Red Cottage. Everything was perfect – the well considered lighting up the path, the heated and welcoming cottage with a super fancy double sided fireplace, the candles to light whilst having a wine in the outdoor twin baths watching the stars, a huge super comfy bed and then waking up to the stunning views of the sheep and cows in the next door paddock with the mountains rising up behind, and a delicious breakfast spread. Myriam and Nigel were absolutely perfect hosts. This had been on our wish list for ages and I can’t imagine why we took so long – we’ll definitely be back sooner rather than later!!

This is our third stay. We've tried both cottages and that have their own spirit, but the standout is the quality of the experience. Miriam & Nigel leave their special mark on every moment of your stay. From the creature comforts of genuine candles to the healthy an generous breakfast to the soaking outdoors under the stars you will love it hear.

Stayed for 2 nights in the new cottage, and we had such a lovely time. Very warm cottage, every appliance we could hope for, super comfortable bed...the outdoor baths were really amazing - even though it was cold outside, we lay in the baths for ages and stared at the stars! Myriam was a fabulous host - a lovely welcome, beautiful cheese platter and breakfast items for our stay. We also really enjoyed watching a movie in the woolshed, such a different experience. We had a great weekend, using our cottage as a base to explore the area around - particularly Lake Clearwater and surround. I would thoroughly recommend Red Cottages for a weekend stay if you want something just a little bit special!
