Detailed Reviews
Stayed at this hotel during a hockey tournament. While I'm sure some guests may not have enjoyed a hotel full of 10-12 year old hockey players, the staff was so kind and accommodating. From the front desk to the ladies that helped prepare breakfast, we had a great experience with staff. When the team ordered pizza for dinner, they generously offered use of a conference room. Parents made every effort to ensure the kids were polite and respectful to the other guests. The popcorn machine in the lobby was a big hit. While popcorn can get messy, I apologized to the staff member for the mess, and her reply was, "It's for the kids to enjoy and that's all that matters." What an outstanding attitude! Rooms were clean and the suites were spacious. Even though breakfast was not supposed to start until a certain time, the staff made sure to have fruit, cereal and pastries for guests who were venturing out early. Prior to our stay, someone always answered the phone and were willing to help. Kudos to the staff which were the true gems of this hotel.

We stopped at this Hampton Inn as we were traveling through South Bend on our way to an NCAA tournament basketball game. I booked online as it seemed like a good halfway stop for us. We were pleasantly surprised at how amazingly comfortable and welcoming this hotel was! We got in late in the evening 10:00 pm, but the desk attendant was very welcoming and offered us bottled water and coffee right away. The entry was clean and bright and smelled fresh when we walked in. We requested adjoining rooms and we had them! We were on the 3rd floor and it was incredibly quiet and comfortable! Our king room ended up being a suite with a separate bedroom (with a door) and living area! This was a surprise and made us so happy. Mom and Dad had their own room and kids slept on the pullout. The adjoining room was two queens. Both rooms were spectacularly clean and the beds were VERY comfortable. There were many plump pillows (4) on each bed. You could tell that the bathroom tub and shower weren’t new or anything, but they were still very clean and worked well. There was loads of hot water for showers! The climate control worked well and we were able to have a comfy temperature without the fan being noisy. We all slept like a rock! The staff at breakfast was SO nice and friendly. We talked to the desk attendant, breakfast attendant, and two housekeeping staff. They were ALL friendly, nice, helpful, and just great people. The breakfast was very basic, but perfectly fit our needs. Hot eggs, sausage, and potatoes, with cold cereal options, Greek and regular yogurt, pastries, juices, coffee with flavored creamers and half and half. We traveled with our family of 3 adults and 3 children. We all slept well and I was so grateful for a restful night. The rooms were plenty large. My GPS didn’t quite direct us to the right spot, but it was just down the road. Book this hotel and you will have a comfortable, clean, and safe stay! It fit our needs for a clean, comfortable stop on our 11 hour drive.

Stayed during the Covid Shutdown and the hotel was hurting. They had reduced staff greatly and because of local laws were unable to provide check in amenities (food), coffee in lounge and unable to serve hot breakfast. So you are asking why still 4 stars?
April was the lady at the front desk and she was phenomenal! She was extremely helpful and informative and went out of her way to help in anyway she could. While most staff would be bitter and upset at being overworked (front desk helping do everything including laundry) she was pleasant and kept apologizing that she couldn't do it all faster.
I hope the owners appreciate how great she is. As a Diamond member I have been to many hotels around the world and employees make or break a location. April definitely earned this place 2 to 3 of the 4 stars on this review.

When we checked in to the hotel, we were given keys to a room that was already occupied. It's good that the occupants were not in the room when we walked in. When we went back to the front desk, we met the employee who checked us in, not wearing his face mask, who was coming after us with different keys. What he didn't tell us was that the new room was in the other wing of the hotel, so we wandered around trying to find the new room. When we finally located it, the keys would not open it. The desk man came with us, and was able to open the room, and said that the battery in the lock needed to be replaced. But no one ever came to fix it, so we had to ensure that one of us was always in the room, so we didn't get locked out with our belongings inside. The room was clean and comfortable. When we checked out the next morning, there was no breakfast available, not even grab & go bags, although the website said that breakfast would be provided. We also observed that very few staff or guests wore face masks, which is certainly a serious concern in 2020. Bottom line - we'll never stay in this loacation again.

This property historically has been our only 'go to' place to stay in the area ever since our oldest son entered Notre Dame in 1998. With now 2 of our sons living very near this property and ND, we never looked anywhere else.
We reserved a two room suite months ago for a visit from Pittsburgh to South Bend 10/14-10/18 since it is not a football weekend.
Yesterday around 4 PM I received an email without any Hilton/Hampton corporate logos, colors or other familiar visuals that are associated with the brand. It appeared to simply be a non-professional, personal email from an employee I did not recognize from long association from the hotel.
It stated that the property would be closed until at least December 28 2021 to be used to house individuals from ND for 'single housing' and that my reservation was cancelled effective immediately. However, the cancellation was "without penalty."
Really? That needed to be said under the circumstances?
A call to the Hilton Honors hotline indicated that the property was sold out, and the next person up the line indicated that they were showing the property was "closed" and the email I received indicated to them that something was not passed through "corporate" before being sent out and they will be looking at what transpired. This is not typical of how Hilton represents ANY of its brands!
While we understand that a 'deal' may have been struck with ND and we harbor no negative feelings toward the university, this 'deal' was handled very poorly by this Hampton with those of us who had made reservations. I feel for those who now have to find somewhere to stay if they have football tickets for games in early September and beyond. We, personally, are now booked at a more distant hotel at a higher price point.
Hilton needs to look at what has been happening at this property and find out why it has been heading in the wrong direction.

+1
I was on a solo road trip in March 2022 (driving from Michigan and going down south) and had the opportunity to spend a Tuesday night at this Hampton Inn in South Bend. Overall, my experience was not perfect but decent and acceptable.
My check-in process went okay, but I am one of few patrons who chooses to pay for part of my room with cash and part with my credit card. It's not a transaction that the front desk staff see often, so there was a bit of confusion for how to handle my payment... but it ended up working out okay.
I received a free upgrade to a suite which I was delighted with! (I hadn't expected that, but perhaps my Diamond status with Hilton Honors is what helped me get that.) I was in Room #316 which was very nice. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and I slept well.
I appreciated the business center (being able to use one of the computers in the lobby to check social media), and breakfast in the morning was decent.
Unfortunately, there were a few aspects of the hotel that were less than stellar. There must have been a lot of staff turnover recently, because three staff I spoke with about various questions/issues stated to me that they were new. They were all friendly, but it was just odd to hear three staff talk about new they were to working at the hotel. Also, the pool was closed due to maintenance (kind of a bummer because I'd hoped to use the pool). And finally, I had hoped to be on the road by 7:00 on Wednesday morning, but I wanted to partake of the breakfast... and breakfast wasn't available until 7. (I stay at a lot of Hampton Inns, and usually during the week, breakfast is available at 6 a.m. so I was slightly annoyed that I had to wait until 7.) Also speaking of breakfast, the waffles weren't available for some reason, which I often have when eating breakfast at hotels.
It's an older property, and while there were some things about my stay that were disappointing, I was fairly pleased with my stay. The positives of my stay certainly outweighed the negatives, and it was a good stay overall.

When we checked in on July 4, the grass outside had not been mowed and looked very unkempt. The young woman at the front desk (I think her name was “Melody”) was very unfriendly and unwelcoming. She did not ask for my ID. She would barely look me in the face. She told me there was no breakfast and the pool was closed. I had to ask for directions to our room. The next morning, the same poor attitude when I said we needed to stay another night (our keys were not updated until we specifically asked after finding the keys no longer worked.) She was also unwilling to help in any way when we noted that the remaining computer did not work. We left to go to church, do laundry, etc. and when we came back, “Holly” was at the front desk. My daughter asked her for help with the computer and she immediately helped out. The “queen suite” actually had doubles, which are notably smaller, but otherwise the suite was nice: lots of closet space, a kitchen, two televisions, etc. The carpet in the suite was clean but in the corridors, it was very dirty. Overall, there are nicer properties in South Bend with more professional help. “Holly” and the closet space and other features in the room are the only reasons to give this property three stars rather than one star.

Probably just average although some aspects weren’t great. 4 night stay, you only get housekeeping if you ask despite the plus $200 room rate, decor and facilities were basic, check in desk was unoccupied quite a lot and every day my room keys stopped working and wi if switched off. The explanation I got was, it is just like that
Breakfast was ok but limited to a handful of choices, coffee was terrible, most days it was cold or weak
Overall it felt like most people just couldn’t be bothered to make it a decent experience

My first impression of the property was that it was a converted Courtyard Inn. I rarely see courtyards in Hampton Inns and it was strange that the business center consisted of two tables stuck in the lobby. Check-in was amazing. A friendly staff member acknowledged my Hilton status and offered complimentary snacks. The elevator and hallway were well-worn with lots of dents and dings, but nothing was dirty. The room we stayed in was about the same. The mirror was all scratched up along the frame, but the bed was comfortable and the air conditioner worked well. My surprise came when I ran the shower. The tub faucet would not stop running (not dripping running) no matter what I did. This was late at night so I didn't say anything. Breakfast was in a small space crammed in the lobby again but it worked fine. Milk out of a machine or in containers would have been better than in 2 small carafes with no ice to keep them warm. When I checked out I mentioned the faucet to a different staff member. With no apology, she said she had lots of rooms like that and she showed me a list of at least 6 rooms to eventually be fixed. Combine that with a pool that has been closed for months and all I can ask is "Where is Maintenance? "

This is the most run down hotel I’ve ever stayed in. It’s out dated, mold infested and all the furniture looks and feels like it’s about to break. The tub looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years!!

No it is quite a distance for walking to the campus
I fortunately did not encounter any of that. It was quiet in the common areas and I didn't hear other rooms. I stayed during a Notre Dame home game also.
No it is not pet friendly.
