Detailed Reviews
Let me preface this by saying I can find good in just about everything. People make fun of me because I can find some humor in about every situation. It was a real challenge at the Econolodge in South Bend Indiana.
So we came in for a Notre Dame game. I live in Dallas and travel quite a bit. I've stayed at Calistoga Ranch in Napa Valley where you can shower outside to the Memphis Inn where the carpet was stained with blood and I slept on a chalk line. I've seen plenty of stuff, but nothing like what I experienced at the Econolodge in South Bend.
We checked in on Friday night. It was me and 3 buddies. The front entry had a bit of a stale smell but the staff that checked us in seemed friendly and laughed at my overused hotel jokes.
As we headed down a creepy hallway toward our rooms the lights got darker and more scary. There is a big guy in our group so I thought if a murderer jumps out to kill us at least I can outrun the big guy. Isn't that what they say? I wasn't the slowest and this gave me comfort.
After snaking through a hallway maze we worked into a gigantic room with 70's carpet and an overwhelmingly pungent stench of old smoke and raid. I remember as a kid riding in my uncle's Cadillac. That guy smoked 3 packs a day and wore a pair of channel locks in his jorts. I haven't thought of my Uncle Gary in about 25 years until I walked into this lobby. It smelled like Uncle Gary's caddy.
If you haven't seen this it looks like a motel except it was inside. The doors faced out toward this lobby but there was nothing out there except all this empty space covered by old carpet. It also has those bubble windows that looked like you stepped back to the 70's when Boogie Nights was popular and Richard Nixon was not a crook.
We got to the room and I'm not sure I've ever seen anything so gross. The room had 70's bedspread, 70's furniture, and the stench was overwhelming. The big guy dry heaved the second he walked in. It could have been the 20 beers he had before we got there but that coupled with the Econolodge south bend was too much too bear. I told him not to touch anything.
Our other 2 buddies walk to their room and the door opens without a key. They are 70-75% sure the South Bend Slasher is there to take them out. They come back and leave their suitcases in our room cause at least our door locks. And we head out as soon as we can.
We have dinner and reluctantly head back to the Econolodge. There is a bar attached to the Econolodge so at least we could drown our fear of being murdered with some booze. There was a really nice bartender that all of us liked. She was sweet, kind, and full of Chrystal Meth. We drank about 25 beers between us while we pumped quarters into the jukebox and played darts. At a little after 1:00 the Big Guy says he’s done and ready to go back. As he left I felt confident that we would never see him again. Then I felt guilty thinking about how I was gonna have to support his family so I grabbed another buddy and we headed back. As I walked in the room the Big Guy had the covers pulled up to his eyes. He said he keeps hearing weird noises and his sheets have yellow spots on them. I told him it’s probably his imagination and just some old stains. It was like when you tell your kids when you know it’s pretty much worse case scenario. My kids don’t believe me and neither did the Big Guy.
I went to the bathroom and the light was on a motion sensor. You had to wave your hand every 5 seconds or else you were going to be in the dark. With a murderer likely hiding behind the shower curtain I was waving my arms like the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.
I crawled in bed and threw the comforter on the floor. It was disgusting. I slept with a sheet only. I was honestly scared to go to sleep. I left the TV on until about 3 and that’s when the Big Guy says he feels things crawling on him. I cried a little inside and couldn’t’ wait for the morning. It was like I was in a horror movie while paying $200 bucks a night.
We woke up on Saturday morning. First thing I felt was to see if my kidneys were still in. Good news . . . . . .they were. I got up and showered in the dark. I tried waving my arms but finally gave up. Good news though, the water was nice and warm.
Our buddies also survived the night.
They threw their suitcases on my bed and we ran across the street to eat breakfast at some pancake house. On the way there we got a better view of the lobby and area. There is a pool next to it that has been drained. We also found the exercise room that had 1 treadmill that didn’t work. In the lobby we found an air hockey table that was broken and a pool table that had no sticks.
We came back after breakfast and our room had been attended to by the cleaning crew. The Big Guys bed was made but mine wasn’t. Sitting on my bed was a note, I wish I could attach a picture so you can see it but I will copy verbatim what it says, “The other bed is not make because we do not suppose to makeup bed that has use stuff on it - Housekeep”
I can’t make this stuff up. So I guess my bed wasn’t made because there was a suitcase on it. No big deal but funny nonetheless. We stopped by the front desk on the way out and had a 15 minute conversation about how the door doesn’t lock. He assured us that maintenance would have it fixed when we got back.
We spent the day at the game and got back later that night. We walked into the creepy lobby and we counted all the scary places to hide. We saw a couple that was also staying there and we asked if they have ever stayed at a more frightening place. They said they hadn’t and will have nightmares for years about the Econolodge of South Bend.
We went back to the bar later that night and stayed till about 1. The lock on the door was never fixed. We woke up early the next morning and bugged out.
It was a terrible experience. The fact that we paid 800 bucks to stay there is one of the biggest rip offs in consumer business since we found out Taco Bell uses horse meat in their tacos. The Econolodge will forever be the butt of all jokes that we have.
I wish I was fabricating this story but it is all true. My imagination is not this good.

The hotel experience was bad from beginning to end. We arrived after midnight and the front desk staff person did not know where our room was located within the hotel. After some searching, we found it on the outside, facing the parking lot ... nowhere near where we directed. The room was filthy, with stains on the bed sheets and towels. The internet was not working, in spite of being "included" in the room fee. The telephone did not work. Breakfast was supposed to be included and served until 9:00 am. When we showed up at 8:45, nothing was left and we were told no more food would be available. there was no manager on site to hear our concerns. Stay away!

I stayed there August 29-30, 2014. I should have known something was up when at three in the afternoon I saw only 4 cars in the parking lot on a Notre Dame game weekend. First off when we made reservations, and later confirmed we asked If it was possible to get an outside room. We were told no problem glad to do it. When we arrived we did not receive an outside room, when we told the girl at the counter her response: I don't care what you were told, you're not getting an outside room. Please note only 4 cars in the parking lot of a 200 room motel. We get to our room there is no hot water, it is 87 degrees. The light above the sink does not work. A maintenance guy does come. He has no idea what he is doing. He cannot even get the cover off of the light. He adjusts the thermostat and says it has to reset and will cool fine. Here is the joke, I am the owner of a heating and air conditioning company, and teach heating and air conditioning at a college. The maintenance guy had no clue what he was doing. He leaves. My wife and I sweater all night. We told the girl at the desk in the morning we wanted these things fixed or a new room upon our return from the game. She gave us nothing but disrespect. We returned from the game. She tells us the problems have been fixed. We return to the room to find the temperature at 88 degrees. She tells "hey what to you want me to do, the guy says it was fixed!" We finally get moved to a new crap hole of a room. Recommendation: Fire the manager, send the maintenance guy to electrical, and heating and air conditioning school. Will gladly pay for a luxury hotel with service next time. Shame on you!

ive reviewed several of the comments for this hotel and I must say some are right, but most are incorrect. My husband or myself stay here at least once a week. All of the staff is friendly and by all, I mean from the front desk staff to the maintance department. Any time an issue occurs, they dont hesitate to make it correct. The property is a bit old but the friendliness of the staff is the reason why we come back, and will continue to. My favorite person to see is Amber, one of the newer desk clerks. She welcomes us with an outstanding smile and great attitude, everytime! Steve is also great and has a wonderful personality. Im excited this place is getting back on their feet and the improvments are needed. I dont have anything negitive to say about this hotel. The staff is honest and make us comfortable.

my husband and I stayed here during the ND Vs. USC football game. It wasnt our first choice, but price made the difference. When we checked in, the staff was very polite, assisted us with directions, coupons for the Football Hall of Fame, and tips for getting to the campus. Minor issues in the room, things like not having towels when requested, carpets were stayed and wallpaper peeling, but the hotel is nothing new. An older hotel is sure to have flaws. Our breakfast was simple but it was nice to grab a bite before going to expierence the Irish. A few other issues were addressed immediatly and the maintance staff was friendly and prompt. Over all, I feel the staff helped make us comfortable. We were traveling for a game, not to site see a hotel. Our value was worth it!

After reviewing numerous negative comments on this site, I would like to begin by saying that I stayed during the first ND home game. This property is in the middle of an ownership change which was explained to me by the manager. The only problem I had the whole weekend was with a kid at the front desk, ironically named Nick. He was rude, disinterested and made me feel like I was bothering him. I did formally complain about his rudeness and the manager on duty was incredibly apologetic and accommodating. Even had a free drink in Gippers! There is no question in my mind why Nick is no longer there. That is definitely one of their first improvements.

I would have stayed here. From the outside it looked clean and well lit, the lobby was nice too. The lady who was behind the counter tried to get me a room , and said the computer was down. Then she went into the back room, and tried on another computer. No dice. Then she called "Dave". He didn't have an answer either. She apologized as I walked out the door.
It's as if Econo Lodge in South Bend doesn't want to host anyone, or take their money. If they can't keep their check in computers in good working order, or at least have a back up plan, they won't last long. They lost my business for sure.

Moldy carpet, terribly dirty air vents, I ended up getting a horrible infection and still am sick one week later It is now econolodge and the people were nice but the rooms nasty.I have been on two sets of antibiotics. I think that if the hotel was not ready then other arrangements should have been made, certainly not a "choice" I would make.

I dont even know where to begin because the list goes on. Pulling in the parking lot, things looked fine. We were shocked when we entered the building to find the desk clerk sitting and she never once stood to greet us. Actually alot of staff were behind the front desk chatting and using language that would be unacceptable for a business. It seemed more like a rest area for the employees than the greeting desk of a hotel. The clerk was a little snippy with her remarks, almost as if we were iggnorant. When we found our room, it smelled of smoke and mildew. I asked to get switch, and it was no problem. Our second room was better but far from quality! Housekeeping needs to be retrained, especially in the bathroom area. Pool area was dirty. The windows in this area look like they havent been cleaned, same for the floors. There were broken chairs and the hot tub didnt work. Children were running all throughout the hotel all hours of the day and night. At one point they were out of towels and said we couldnt have any until the following day AFTER housekeeping arrived. I asked to speak to the manager about some issues and was told "IF" she comes in they didnt know what time it would be! Breakfast should not even be an option at this location and I honestly feel the night front deskmen, Mike, was the best thing this hotel has to offer. As for the est of the staff, maybe another set of "new" management should be hired and let everyone go. The 2 women I encountered at the desk should not be working in the hospitality business!

Me and a couple of family members came out to South Bend to visit my nephew who's a student at Nodre Dame and decided to stay at this hotel for the night. I had stayed at this hotel a few months back and the only reason why I came back was because of the Nick, one of the front desk clerks. On our last visit he was very polite and got us a good rate on a room and so we decided to come back. So i get to the hotel, and i enter the lobby and no one is even at the front desk, and after waiting for 5 minutes a woman finally shows up and wasn't even sorry for making us wait. So I ask her if we could get the same rate we got last time but she refused because they had lost our information due to a new computer system, or something like that. So we get our room and when we tried to enter our room we couldn't get because the lock was broken. So, we had to go back to the front desk and get another room and the room we had wreaked of mold, all the channels on the tv were fuzzy, the sheets seemed dirty, there was trash under and around the bed, and there was a problem with the drain in the shower. Since we were really tired we just decided to deal with the room. The next morning we got up for their free breakfast and there was barely anything out there and no one was there to maintain the area. I told the person at the front desk about the breakfast situation and they did nothing about. Everything about this place was unacceptable. I was very displaesed with the extremely low quality of the hotel and will never be staying here again.
