A very beautiful, atypical experience in a quiet setting in Deshaies. The welcome and breakfasts are excellent! The location is great, at the end of the beach. A relaxing and pleasant stay. Please note, no air conditioning in the rooms, but they are well ventilated.

We have just got back from a sailing holiday in Guadeloupe. Before we boarded the yacht we stayed for four nights at Tainos Village Hotel which is in a beautiful location right at the end of Grande Anse beach, Deshaies, in its own tropical gardens from which you could step right onto the beach (which is gorgous, unspoilt and not busy)

Tainos Cottages give you a very different experience as they consist of 6 Thai style wooden buildings set in gardens. The cottages don't have glass windows but have wooden slatted shutters and are open between the top of the wall and the roof so that the air can circulate freely. This is all very well but it makes the rooms extremely dark and it is impossible to keep insects out. The beds had mosquito nets but were not 100% effective.

Our cottage was on one level with a separate bathroom which was very well appointed. We had to move to another cottage on the last night as we had been double booked and this one was even more interesting! The ground floor was completely open and you went up a ladder and through a trap door to the bedroom. The bathroom and bedroom were all one room which I didn't like very much.

The place is run by a very charming gentleman. Breakfast is served by the little swimming pool and is very nice. You can get salads at lunchtime and they serve good dinners (albeit very expensive) if you want to eat there.

All in all it was a positive experience but not one I would want to repeat, although I would highly recommend that part of Guadeloupe as a place to stay as it was very pretty and unspoilt with several empty beaches.

We stayed at the Tainos for a week in June, having chosen it after reading the NYT article and seen rave reviews of it in various other publications. The previous review is generally accurate -- the Tainos is located on a spectacular site by the lovely Grande Anse beach, and is made up of beautifully designed bungalows set into a well-landscaped hillside.

Our experience was colored by two big problems: June is the off-season, with more humidity and rain and hence more insects than usual -- and also the main building of the hotel was renovated, with limited staff on hand to clean things up. The owner/manager, Charles-Henry Bichara, is a very nice guy but very relaxed by American standards, and as he sheepishly admitted he really should have closed up for the renovation. (We were the only guests most of our 6 days there.) As it was, the poolside main building was a sawdust-covered worksite, and the otherwise lovely bungalow/bedrooms were in some disrepair and not very well cleaned. There were many small spiderwebs hidden in the woodwork and the mosquito netting, giving us many small spider bites at night, harmless but itchy and irritating. (There were relatively few mosquitos; the netting was mostly for show.)

I expect that Charles-Henry will have finished his renovations and hired more cleaning staff by the time anyone reading this will want to travel. But if you're attracted to this kind of place, when you make your bookings definitely ask him about the status of renovations and encourage him to redouble his cleaning efforts before your visit!

This is near where we were staying in Guadeloupe, so I went to look at it as an alternative for a future visit.

Sadly, it’s nothing like the pictures on the website. There is a general air of neglect, with a damaged footbridge on the approach from the beach and a broken fountain clogged with weeds, overflowing.

The cabins appeared tatty; just badly maintained on the outside, with loose and drooping shutters. A children’s play area had swings with worn and faded seats. The equally dilapidated common area was dirty and the bar / restaurant was in a very sorry state. The car park had a couple of vehicles in it. Access from the main road seems awkward.

Look elsewhere.

I wish I could give a glowing review of this hotel. We arrived with high expectations having read encouraging reviews online. It's true that the Tainos is an exceptional property set in a postcard perfect setting with Indonesian-style cottages tucked away amidst palm trees and tropical vegetation. However, the hotel is currently undergoing a change in management and while I hope we were only unfortunate to stay during this transition, the services and amenities do not justify some of the most expensive hotel rates in Guadeloupe. We knew in advance that the cottages were "rustic", but as a previous reviewer mentioned, these are more like cabins with running water. Beautifully decorated yes, but sparse and short on comfort. Despite the mosquito nets, copious amounts of strong bug spray, and a trip to town to buy citronella candles, we spent two nights lying awake trying to ward off Mosquitos to no avail. We were the only guests at the hotels and the staff seemed overall startled by our arrival, despite having made a reservation. The pool is small and not well maintained. We were told the bar and restaurant were not open and the hotel could not accept credit cards (not convenient for rates that run upwards of 300 euros a night in the mid-season). No toiletries were provided and we had to ask for toilet paper. What I imagine was once the common area of the hotel has been taken over by the owners family so using the pool or the sun deck feels like imposing on someone's private space. I truly hope our experience was an anomaly as this hotel seems like it has the potential to be amazing. But until management decides on the direction of the hotel, I cannot recommend this hotel as the high prices were not at all justified for the lack of service and amenities.

Really dirty and dilapidated! We were floored by this place to the point that we wouldn't have stayed there if it was free rather than close to $500. Per night. It began with concern while driving down the driveway. Looked like a property let go years ago. We kept an open mind until we arrived at reception and viewed stained cushions, a total mess, really dirty with family members and kids running around presenting with no interest in our arrival. Walked us to a cottage. On route we saw cottages with no screens, wires hanging from them, broken wood. We couldn't believe it! When leaving, the driveway landscape was so bad, it is not possible to view oncoming traffic from the main road further showing the apathy of this property's owners. Fortunately we found alternate lodging at a Langley Fort Royal resort, a few miles away which was wonderful for a fraction of the cost. It included a wonderful beach, water sports, entertainment and breakfast. English speaking staff was another bonus. If you stay there, request an ocean front bungalow. Welll worth any upgrade cost. When leaving, head south down to the traverse through the national Forest. shortly past Deshaies, don't miss the Rain forest walk through with the animals . It was amazing! Further down the road, is a waterfall (cascade) where you can swim and get amszing photos. Enjoy!! MTMB

My Partner and I chose Tainos Cottages for our honeymoon because we had a read an article about the hotel in The New York Times. We chose Guadeloupe because we wanted a distinctly French Caribbean Experience. We spent the first part of our honeymoon at La Toubana Spa and Resort in Saint Anne. It was a bit hard to adjust to the rustic nature of Tainos after having spent 4 days in a very elegant, polished resort.
Yet, Tainos is extraordinary! What a unique tropical, secluded, rustic property. La Plage de Grand Anse which the hotel sits directly on is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. It is picture card perfect and very private (very few people on the beach and no commercial properties or hotels whatsoever). You feel like you are on your own private island. Tainos has a nice little pool area where Charles Henri serves a fresh French breakfast every morning. You can lounge and relax under the shaded Carbet with a direct view of the beach.
Our private cottage with its own private spa was very spacious. We had a large porch with a hammock, a large four poster bed and living area, two showers (one inside and one outside a small porch) and a separate bathroom cottage area. The cottage had many large windows that opened onto stunning mountain views. The cottages should really be called cabins however as they are very rustic with no screens, air conditioning and feel a bit like being at camp with nice furniture and artwork on the walls. Our biggest problem with the Cottages and the hotel in general were the abundance of insects. We knew there would be bugs and mosquitos, but at night it was so unbearable that we could not sleep soundly. Even though our bed was surrounded by mosquito netting, we woke in the morning to numerous bug bites (and were were wearing lots bug repellant!). It might be nice if the hotel invested in screens for the cottages as I think this would make a world of difference ( and perhaps also provide citronella candles and bug spray ).

Charles Henri and his son Boris were very welcoming and spoke English which we appreciated since we speak very limited French. They were very accommodating (Boris even woke us up personally at 5am so we could make an early morning flight home). They have a stunning property and beautiful Indonesian cottages. With a little fixing up, this hotel could be a perfect paradise.

Although the site is unique, hence the double price of competitors (300 € per night). But the service and conveniences are cery low .

* Hygiene is bad :

- Impossible to take a shower during all the week : no hot water and quite no cold water!
- Waste water flowed through the floor and was not connected to the sewer!
-Animals: owner's dogs are free and they eat the leftovers near the dining room, cows loose on the path to the beach, insects found in toiletries, lizards and frogs inside the bathroom…(yes!)

SERVICE

* at the time of a dinner(65€/pers) we waited 2 hours before starting to be served ("it's coming ...").

* very “rustic” installations:

- Driveways inconspicuous, muddy, unlit
-you enter the room by climbing through a trap door with a very steep ladder staircase (difficult to pass the bags).

Finally it’s a beautiful site, yes, but service and comfort are lower than those of a small camping.
Then, 300€ per night is a bit expansive for that!

If your idea of a vacation is an all-inclusive-type property providing countless activities (beach volleyball, water aerobics, fun contests, etc.); loads of water-sports (Seadoos*, waterskiing, bananaboats, parasailing); a vast choice of restaurants offering various international cuisine; amenities such as swimming pool(s) with swim-up bar, jacuzzi*, a gym, children's play area, beach loungers under palapas/parasols,in-room safe and telephone, satellite TV; night-time activities such as shows, discos and an overall party-type atmosphere, you will be greatly disappointed by Taïnos Cottages and ought to look to the south of Grande-Terre from Le Gosier through to Sainte-Anne then on to Saint-François. There you will find everything including the white-sand beaches and calm, clear Caribbean sea: breathtaking!

The Taïnos is located in Deshaies, "dans la campagne" (in the countryside) on the north-west side of Basse-Terre, the mountainous, volcanic, windy coast "wing of the butterfly" that is the shape of Guadeloupe. The waters of the gold-sand beaches can be at times rough and even dangerous. The town litterally shuts down at 9 PM.
There are no activities co-ordinators. There is no loud caribbean-type music playing constantly. There are no drinks delivered to the beach. There are no water-sports. There are no lounge chairs on the beach.

What you will find is a quiet, peaceful haven located on a public, natural reserve, where the locals respect the environment.

The rooms offer no air-conditioning -- they are not hermetically-sealed nor sound-proof: instead, there are vents open in the ceiling -- the air circulates through the louvered wood shutters. So there are mosquitos a-plenty and yes, despite the nets over beds and repellents, they still attack. The Taïnos is located in a protected nature reserve and therefore an array of small creatures sometimes frequent your room (albeit, not simultaneously!)

You're thinking, when do I get to my opinion? Here goes.

We loved every single mosquito-filled moment of our stay -- the Taïnos exceeded our expectations.
Because we live in downtown Montreal, in a home that has every amenity, surrounded by bars, discos, pubs, bistros, every type of restaurant, noise, activities that go on until the very early hours of the morning, we were looking for the opposite. That is exactly the type of place we'd been researching.

Boris and his father Charles-Henri are down-to-earth, warm, worldly and funny: they themselves were all the entertainment we needed! The gardens surrounding the property are breathtaking: Charles-Henri has done beautifully!

The rooms are not only delightful, but kept impeccably clean. (I'm really not quite sure why one visitor gave it a 2 star? Was the traveller unfairly comparing it to a 4 diamond, 5 star hotel? Not the same category and therefore, this is not the hotel for them).
The staff is courteous, smiling and professional.
The breakfast is delicious and plentiful.
The restaurant was temporarily closed, but it didn't bother us. It'll be open the next time we visit!

There is only one thing that I did not find fair or appealing and I hope that it can be addressed: it's about allowing children under a certain age. (Before you bite my head off, please read on).

Taking a vacation with our children is great fun! But other times, we want to vacation without children just to get some peace and quiet. I'm certain travellers reading this can appreciate.
One of the reasons we chose Taïnos, is exactly because it did not seem like the type of place that would be appealing for parents to take their children to: that is, quiet, with no play area and nothing to entertain the children.
I would never think of bringing my children to a place such as this one, simply because I respect my fellow travellers and know that they've chosen Taïnos for its tranquility.
I find it disrespectful of travellers who bring infants, toddlers and children under 11 or 12 to a place that is suppose to be tranquil. There are seven cottages in all, and even though you might not be in a cottage next to a child, you can still hear cries travelling because of the openness of the place.
Also, I found the parents' behaviour unacceptable: they would relax while their toddlers ran around unattended on the uneven paving of the pool (with all sorts of rocks, corals, rope to trip on), relying on other guests to "baby sit" their children for them! I don't care if you bring a nanny or two, children are children. It's not their fault! I'm sorry to say, it's the parents'.
With so many (in my opinion too many) places that allow children, why take them to a place, such as Taïnos? Unfortunately there are not many places where children are not allowed, and if there are, it is an "adults only" or "couples only" all inclusive-type place where a party-like atmosphere reigns, and what we DON'T want.
So where can we go to escape noise (be it from"partying" or the noise children make)?
And for you thinking "you're not being fair! My children and I are just as entitled as you to be in a tranquil place!" I understand, but please respect your fellow man. Perhaps you are unaware, but by bringing your child(en) you are disrupting the peace and tranquility so many are searching for.

Perhaps the Taïnos can think of changing their policy about accepting children under 12. (While we were there, there was a charming German family with an 11 and 13 yrs. old: both were well-behaved, respectful of their environment and never loud -- a real pleasure to have around!)

We loved it here. I booked this hotel as I am a fan of the BBC series Death in Paradise and wanted to visit Deshaies where it’s filmed. Although slightly out of town, Tainos Cottages looked like an interesting place to stay and I’m so glad I chose it.

Initially we struggled to find Tainos and no one we asked seemed to be able to help (although could be our French accents). So we parked up and were trying to work out what to say in French when we called to ask directions, when my phone rang & it was the hotel owner calling us. He spoke perfect English. Thank God!! He told us he was having some issues with road access so he directed us to the Grande Anse car park where he came to find us and helped us from there as access to his property required a short walk across unpaved ground and across a small stream. It was fun and so worth it.

We were shown to our room which was a beautifully rustic cottage with a huge veranda with table, chairs, rocking chair, sofa and hammock and a Jacuzzi on a covered platform outside. It was truly lovely.
We were only there two nights and arrived after lunch on day one so did nothing much except have a couple of beers by the pool and a shower before going down to town for sunset cocktails and dinner.

The next day we spent an idyllic morning by the pool and then wandered down the beach for lunch at a beach bar, followed by a snooze in the hammock before another night down in town. Perfect!

The hotel is only about 2k outside of town so an easy walk in daylight but you need a torch for the walk back.

Oh and I almost forgot…..Breakfast was great. Freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit, a wonderful selection of breads and the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had. All washed down with a perfect pot of tea. They know us Brits love our tea and had a perfect brew.
Thank you.
