Near the bottom of the habitable world is our new luxury lodge, The Lindis. Nestled almost imperceptibly on the valley floor, with an elegant slatted roof mimicking the contours of the earth below, there is an undeniable harmony between structure and land. Designed for the utmost in luxury — with superlative interior furnishing, a veritable plethora of activities on our doorstep, unmistakably warm high-country hospitality, and a refined restaurant that pays direct homage to the flora and fauna of our surrounds, the experience of staying with us is truly unique. At The Lindis we use nature as our weathervane, and so when we see the effortless perfection of our environment, we are implored to emulate it. And so that’s what we do.

A wonderful landscape and you know that you are heading towards something special! The main Lodge building nestles unobtrusively into the earth. We opted for the "Pods". Think cruise ship cabin. Takes a bit of organising to stow everything but it can be done and the experience of a private glass cabin with expansive views is amazing. The hot tub is a highlight; great to use after dinner on a very cold night!
The strength of The Lindis is its staff and the food. We are not fans of degustatiion and after sitting through a long evening of multiple small courses, we were delighted to be offered a limited set menu of tasty and delicious food for the remainder of our stay. The cooking staff are truly passionate about what they do and it is reflected in quite exceptional offerings!
Although the main building is quite stunning (a copy of the Savill Building at Windsor), in my view the plot has been lost in the interior. The dominating gothic- like bluestone wall seems out of context, as does the uncomfortable seating in the Grand Room. Placing a pool table and tv adjacent to the dining area seems a bit wrong for a luxury lodge- at one stage we thought we were at the Petone Working Mens Club!
The biggest disappointment was the absence of some of the "Luxury Lodge" experiences. No welcome drink, no happy hour where you generally have the opportunity to mix and mingle with other guests over unlimited drinks and canapes. This may well be a trade off to offer reduced tariffs for locals?

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at The Lindis. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We appreciate your comments and whilst our contemporary architecture and interiors is preferred by some, of course some will still prefer the more traditional. What we are striving to achieve at The Lindis is a new type of luxury lodge offering, to compliment the already fantastic established offerings in New Zealand. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Thanks The Team at The Lindis

The location is splendid, the young team around Jon is motivated and he really impressed us right when we arrived as he dealt with our frustration about the accommodation we had booked and offered an alternative which fully met our expectations. We had booked one of their 3 pods and while they offer a maximum of privacy and a bespoke glamping experience, they are just too small for a couple traveling with quite some bags as there is nowhere you can fit your luggage.
In the Lounge and dining area, we were pampered by Gloria, Carole and Nat who made us feel very welcome and at home. A girl from Texas who settled for good in NZ, an Aussie with Thai routes from Melbourne and a girl from Belgium on a working visa, all the 3 of them with strong personalities - a nice difference to the standard superficial profiles.
Biggest issue at the Lindis is the food. Their head chef Cesar moved to NZ from Italy some 30 years ago and his cooking is the one you would have expected back then in Italy. Pasta for starter and affogato for dessert were standard every day, complemented by an additional starter and dessert and a Choice of 2 main courses. Nothing wrong with the quality of the pasta etc but when we book a modern lodge we expect the cuisine to be modern too.

A visit to The Lindis is so special. Starting with the location which is is stunning, the building blends into the landscape and the interior only enhances the beauty of outside. The welcome is so warm you immediately feel at home and relaxed. Nothing stuffy about the staff here but they are true professionals who wish to please you and do so so very well. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all amazing - we stayed 3 nights never ate the same thing and all the food was exceptional. Accommodation is so comfortable and the views from the rooms are beautiful. Although remote there are plenty of activities to do if you wish, hiking, biking, fishing and horse riding to name a few. Would definitely recommend a stay here and will hopefully be able to return one day.

We were looking forward to discovering this new lodge and the magic didn't work at all, unlike the other lodges we've visited in New Zealand anD Australia over the years. We were disappointed.
The architecture is very beautiful in a splendid environment but I wonder if the architect ever slept in his lodge ... Some of the architect's follies are not at all functional for an average guest, the lighting system is very complicated and several times I almost fell when I bumped into spotlights on the floor of the room.
I think this lodge is more reserved for young youtuber-influencers who spend their time taking photos of themselves. I wouldn't recommend the lodge to anyone over 30...
The welcome is charming but very robotic, distant and formatted.
The food is decent but not very generous in its portions and the lunch is too light.
The breakfast choice is very limited and also lacks generosity.
The room is comfortable but not very functional: the bathroom is designer, glazed and open.
The staff are friendly, but it's a shame that in such a small place the manager doesn't come to greet his guests throughout their stay.
The quality of the wifi in such a remote location was exceptional.
We found it expensive for what we had. We were more attracted to Saffire Tasmania, Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island or even Huka Lodge on Lake Taupo.
There are improvements to be made to reach an exceptional level.
We also regret that an email is not sent to customers to give feedback, which we would have done in person if the manager had come to see us during our stay.

We stayed here in February on the recommendation of friends and we are so pleased we did. This was our third attempt to get there due to Covid restrictions and we are so pleased that we made the effort. Everything was perfect from the welcome to the farewell (and those were both outstanding and memorable).

The landscape in incredible and like many of the New Zealand reviewers we stayed in the Pods. Yes they are cheaper but the experience was just outstanding and we are so pleased that we did. We are really keen to return in winter to experience the landscape differently and in that case we might choose the convenience of being in the actual lodge.

We were pleased we had pre booked out activities - hint to future guests - if you don't, you might miss out. We enjoyed the biking; horse rising and walking. There are many photographic opportunities and ....the stars!!!

The food was really special and the attention to detail and caring of the staff is quite something. This is not a cheap experience but we came away feeling like we had enjoyed value for money - and that is a real credit to the entire team.

We can't wait to come back.

we stayed at The Lindis over Valentines Day weekend - it was wonderful. we were in a Pod - which we really liked. felt like you were off on your own and yet right next door gourmet dining, fabulously attentive staff and wonderful atmosphere. we brought our own bikes and staff added padding to our seats for our all day outing (very welcomed by the time we returned) which included a marvelous 'picnic' lunch. there was also a special Valentine's Day surprise.

First, one should know that The Lindis is very far. Really very far from any other place. Building and running a hotel when you are hours away from the first shop or village is certainly extremely difficult. Not only they do it but they reach a level of quality and service that no one would really dream of in such conditions.
New Zealand is the country of nature and wonderful landscapes. The Lindis location is even more than that. The center of the most beautiful nowhere...Just go and see
The hotel building was design to merge in the environment and it is a complete success. Service and food are very good and the rooms are modern and comfortable, although there were some mistakes in the design. Getting rid of every light of the room at night is very complicated (not even sure it is possible).

From when you first arrive and look at the expansive view over the valley floor to the snow capped mountains, The Lindis didn’t disappoint!

Pitched as luxury accommodation the team did everything possible to live up to that. An awesome attentive team full of suggestions, catering to individual needs and ensuring this was an experience to remember.

We had one of the large rooms for our 35th wedding anniversary, and went out on walks, hot tub under the stars, visit to the stables, a drive around the farm, and a picnic for 2. Don’t be afraid to ask what you would like as lots of opportunity and suggestions.

The cooking was exquisite for every meal, adjusting to allergies and bringing in your “likes” just for you.

It’s not cheap, but if you are after an experience to remember, to be thoroughly spoiled and views to die for, this is the place memories are made!

An amazing three nights at The Lindis and thanks to COVID-19 we had to travel within NZ. Highly recommend this lodge that is all inclusive around room and food etc. There are free experiences and others that can be organised by the friendly and professional staff [mountain biking, horse riding etc]. The food was amazing and the 50 sqm room also out of this world. The setting is just as pictured in the advertising and nothing let us down. Would love to return...a must go..

Have stayed twice at the lodge, it is one of those places which is even better than its advertising. The Lodge blends into the high country setting and all the rooms have stunning views up the Ahuriri valley and into the mountains. Lots of activities, and very helpful staff. Not cheap but still excellent value for money.
