Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Happiness is defined by reality less expectations. If you choose a mountain lodge 3500m above sea level in an extremely rural country of Africa and expect the same experience you would get from Courchevel, not only are you being unfair on yourself but being extremely unfair on the lodge. Rather save up, get your Schengen Visa, pay the flight and take the hefty Euro bill with a smile.

if however, you are intrigued in an rural African high mountain experience (in our case skiing) thats less than 6 hours from Johannesburg with a painless border post at an extremely reasonably priced 3 star hotel experience, then this is absolutely the place to go.

A big group of us stayed here for the weekend. The lodge was just perfect. New Oxbow Lodge is a family owned lodge that has been handed down through the generations. Liaki (spelling) and his family were hands on, and assisted at every single turn and contributed HUGELY to the experience.

The meals were good (buffet style breakfast and dinner). Nothing gourmet. Simple but good. The bar was a great experience and was a lot of fun with a warm fire and DSTV available to watch the rugby.

Temperatures drop to the minus teens in winter which puts strain on the infrastructure and no doubt causes huge challenges for management. I was concerned about not having hot water. This concern was misplaced. We all had piping hot water throughout our stay. The rooms were simple and clean. It is cold, but you have ample blankets and heaters to take the edge off.

It is not quite a 5 star rating. i have no doubt that Covid probably had a big impact on this lodge and some small changes like bigger towels, and potentially showers in each room (some only have baths). But when you biggest problem 3500m above sea level is your towel isnt massive enough, you really have nothing to complain about.

I loved our weekend. It was made by New Oxbow Lodge, the management and family owners. If you want pretentious then keep searching - if you want good, clean and fun - then this is the place. I will be back with my family and we WILL be staying at New Oxbow Lodge.

Two nights stay as part of a group to visit Afriski. Upon arrival around 16.00 my room mate and I wanted to take a shower and there was no water in our room. We kept being told the pipes were frozen and it is going to come soon and the soon ended up being the next morning.
Breakfast not bad at all with very good warm oatmeal as well as dinner
Room warm with 2 gas heaters
Clean linen but they use blankets which are unlikely to be washed after every stay.

Proper refurbishment and renovation is needed in the rooms especially the bathrooms. This doesn't qualify as a 3 stars. First night rice was under cooked, Dinner don't include drinks, The expensive wifi that only works at the reception area is also a rip off. Think the establishment is taking advantage of having no competition near it. At least water was hot or warm enough,

Last weekend we stayed with friends at New Oxbow Lodge and what a awesome stay it was. After a long drive from Ficksburg on the motorbikes we arrived just before 5. Our host Laki welcomed us and took us on a tour whilst telling us the history since his parents started the Lodge decades ago. The rondavels 8 and 9 are comfortable with every thing you need, enough blankets and a gas heater as well as complimentary Coffee making facilities. There are more than enough warm water to shower as there are no powerlines and the water is heated with coal in a boiler. This is Lesotho and people from the City should stop complaining and rather appreciate the lenghts through which he and his staff goes to ensure guests have a comfortable stay. The food was really great and the staff friendly and attentive. The guys loved the Maluti beer. Waking up with the sound of the waterfall was pure bliss. Yes the electricity goes off around 10 till 6 on the morning but it didn't bother us, lying in bed with candles made us relax more. Sitting by the beautifull waterfall, surrounded by the Mountain makes one appreciate the few days to relax and de stress. Well worth the stay!

We spent two nights at the New Oxbow Lodge in June 2022, and were very disappointed. For what we paid, we DEFINITELY did not get value for money. The Lodge is in a state of disrepair and needs lots of maintenance. After our first night, as requested, we left our keys with reception, so that our room could be serviced. When we returned to the Lodge at 16h30 that afternoon, the room had not been cleaned, the towels had not been replaced, etc. The door to our verandah was jammed and, despite effort, could not be opened. The glass pane on the door was broken. The room needed lots of maintenance. The sign behind the door with various instructions for guests had 11 grammatical errors! The food was, at best, marginal, and the beef stew was so tough that it was inedible. The power is switched off at 22h00, so there's no heating through the night (and the rooms are freezing!). There are no electric blankets. On our first night, we had no hot water for our showers. The next morning, there was hot water, but only after we ran both hot water taps for about 10 minutes.

A rustic, but beautiful establishment. Rooms are comfortable, clean and homey with friendly and competent staff who are always available to help. The food is hearty and perfect to full a day of exploration. The owners are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about the area and the culture giving you great info and tips for your stay.

We stopped at Oxbow Lodge while passing from Buthe Buthe to Sani Pass. I was amazed at how beautiful it was inside as it looked a bit bland from the road side. The staff were so friendly and welcoming that we vowed we have to stay there one day, maybe while during a bike trip in the future. Very, very nice.

We stopped over en-route from the Sani Pass. The hotel was quaint with an old world charm of bygone days. The rooms were simple but functional, and the meals were good value for money. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Some of our party went for a run and enjoyed meeting some of the local herdsmen and villagers.

New Oxbow Lodge has been upgraded since we there last. Overall a good experience. Neat, tidy and clean rooms. Food was also good. Staff are very friendly. Keep in mind that this lodge is situated high up in the Lesotho mountains. Thanks so much!

My husband and I had the great misfortune to book in at New Oxbow Lodge for 1 night last week.We were bitterly disappointed as the room was dingy, dirty and my mattress needed replacing as so worn. The waste-bin in our room had not been emptied. The bedding consisted of 2 ill-fitting sheets and 3 very heavy synthetic blankets. The young lady who dealt with us on arrival was pleasant and helpful but the owner never came near us. The dinner we ordered was literally inedible huge plate of pasta with big chunks of tinned ham mixed in and very little sauce I Ieft all mine and had a piece of white bread and Marmite! The bathroom was appalling and badly needed revamping. All told really a shame that because it is packed with skiers during the winter and makes a huge profit then the owner really does not bother to uphold good standards of service.
