My husband and I planned a weekend getaway to this historic hotel but only stayed for one night. The gentleman on duty at the front desk was very friendly and helpful when we checked in to the hotel. The historic areas of the building were closed due to COVID-19 and there was no delicious breakfast as described by other patrons. The bed and tub were clean, but there was no soap in the soap dish or bath room rug, and the washcloth was literally in shreds. The shower current was stained and there was a hole in the ceiling. The air conditioner did not work. When the maid started to vacuum my husband developed an allergic reaction which led to us checking out a day early. I suspect a good carpet cleaning and vacuum cleaner bag change is in order. When we checked out the woman at the front desk continued to talk on the phone without acknowledging me for a few minutes as I waited to check out. When she finally put the phone down I handed her the room keys and told her we were checking out. She said “is that all” and did not bother to ask about whether or not their was any problems or if she could be of some assistance. We will not be returning to this establishment.

Very nice quaint and comfortable hotel in Evanston walking distance to shops, restaurants, train and Northwestern University. The hotel was very comfortable and clean, and the front desk help was amazing. Taiyone made check in so easy, was very pleasant and ensured we had everything we needed for our stay.

We are repeat customers of the Margarita European Inn, having discovered this gem of a hotel when it was an independent. Our trips to the area are usually to Chicago, but we certainly do not mind the drive to and from Evanston via the Lake Shore Rd./Sheridan Rd. route as we enjoy entering Evanston through the neighborhood streets which are full of beautiful and unique architectural styles and then driving through the downtown to the hotel. The ambiance of this unique hotel property brings us back over and over. From the old-time cage elevator to the lovely parlor and the library all the way to the rooftop terrace, we enjoy it all! Nicely decorated for the holidays too! The rooms are spacious enough (keeping in mind that the property once was a business school for young women) and clean and comfortable. The complimentary breakfast offerings are generally quite tasty, from the eggs and sausage to the croissants and other baked sweets to the fruit and coffee. Additionally, if you want to eat or shop in Evanston, the downtown center is within walking distance. So is the train station. For the price, it is worth it. One caveat is the parking for which there is an additional daily fee; be sure that you understand where guests are allowed to park.

Extremely helpful and friendly manager, delicious breakfasts by a French pastry-chef. The hotel is quiet, and conveniently located for restaurants and trains (CTA and Metra). Our kingsize bed was very comfortable. It is next door to a museum devoted to stained glass (much of it Tiffany) and the history of timekeeping, with an amazing collection of clocks.

I was excited about this hotel, as it was clearly not the cookie-cutter corporate hotel experience. Staff were kind and bathroom was lovely. Short of that, nothing to recommend it. We were three, arriving late, and I wrote an email before arrival to make sure they knew we were arriving late and to make sure the bed for the third was ready to go, and . . . no bed set up when we arrived. Not that it mattered--the pull-out was the most uncomfortable pull-out we have experienced in our years of traveling as three (son with us). Either replace the pull-out with a bed one can actually sleep on, or scratch the claim that the room sleeps three. Received no maid service, even though we left around 9:30AM and returned late at night. For these prices, I expect to come home to some fresh towels and emptied trash cans. When I called down to ask for towels and ask why no maid service, not much of a response. They brought up a 2 towels, although it was a room for three, no wash cloths, hand towels. I gave up. The hotel needs maintenance badly--the wood on the windows has decayed, so that the wind gets in and it can get cold and in the morning, noisy. Breakfast was okay, but they ran out of hot water, stuff had run out when we came to eat at 9, had to hunt down someone to ask if they could replenish. My sense is that they need more staff, the ship needs tighter running, and they need to put some money into basic maintenance. Shame, as the location is great and the historic building could be charming with some TLC.

Dear Janet, Thank you so much for staying with us and thank you also for taking the time to write an honest review of your experience with us. I apologize that we were not able to provide you with an amazing experience. Our goal is for every guest to leave with a warm memory in their heart. In your case we were obviously not able to do that. In regards to the breakfast I will follow up with breakfast team, because that is absolutely unacceptable. As you can read from other reviews, our guests are typically raving about our breakfast. Philippe, our French baker, makes wonderful croissants and pastries, and they are loved by many of our guests. I will also follow up with my Housekeeping Manager to find out why your room was not cleaned. This is highly unusual because our housekeeping team truly takes such pride in their work. It seems that we failed on many levels, and that is not who we are and how we normally present our hotel. Every single person who works here, loves the hotel, loves our guests, and loves going above and beyond. I understand that you were not happy with your stay, and there is likely not a whole lot I can say that will magically make your experience any different. I will share your review with all our staff and let them know that it is completely unacceptable. I once again apologize, but hope that you will come back and give us another opportunity. One thing is certain and that is that we look forward to welcoming you back. Kindest Regards, TJ Geurtsen General Manager

We spent a weekend in Chicago area visiting our niece and doing Chicago Open House. We had not heard of this hotel before, but happened on it in an internet search. Although this hotel is associated with the Choice Hotel chain, it is not the usual cookie cutter Choice hotel. The Margarita Inn is a lovely place to stay with unique ambience decorated in the manner of the early part of the 1900s. Our room was small but comfortable; the furnishings were minimal but very nice. The bathroom was modernized but had an old world look. Yes, the elevator is old, but works well and is what you would expect in this hotel. We enjoyed the large parlor, smaller liabrary and the roof top patio, taking advantage of the opportunity to sit and spend time with family. The breakfast was very good; scrambled eggs and sausage and many kinds of pastries; excellent greek yogurt and hot oatmeal with garnishes. The coffee was good; not te usual cheap hotel coffee. We agreed with family members we were traveling with that this hotel is excellent and we will definitely stay here again if/when we travel to Chicago again.

The employees are laid back. The hotel is in a GREAT location... blocks from all the restaurants and bars. They are next door to the clock and glass museum--A MUST SEE--ESPECIALLY THE CLOCKS... watch the videos with the clocks...super cool. Parking is a little scary because is it dark...but we never felt unsafe. The neighborhood is dark, so get your bearings during the day so when driving at night you can find your turns :) free tip from deb. They do not have microwaves or fridges in the room--FYI. The breakfast in the morning was lovely... It reminds me of old English movies having coffee and a bite in the sitting room. We also enjoyed sitting in the little library. The roof patio was very nice and our floor had a back terrace. The elevator is the original with the metal sliding door and at first a bit intimidating but worked fine and never had an issue. LOVED THIS PLACE!!!!

Dear Ms. Carcione, I am so grateful for your amazing review of your experience with us at the Margarita European Inn! Your kind words are what keeps us going every day and they provide the best motivation you could ever ask for! In regards to the parking lot. I have reached out to the company that we lease our area of the parking lot from a few times to inform them of lights being out. I have just sent them another reminder and will call them tomorrow to make sure that this gets taken care of. Even though we are in a very safe neighborhood, I know it is dark out there and this needs to be taken care of. We all look forward to welcoming you back and please don’t hesitate to ask for me in person, I always love meeting our guests! Until next time, TJ Geurtsen General Manager

In late August I checked in here for a second visit and the hotel made sure I'd be able to check in very early without any issues or drama. The day before check in I checked with the front desk over the phone to make sure there would be a room available to me before their original check in time and they reserved the room for me for the next day. This time my room was a bit smaller than my first stay but it was still extremely charming and colorful. I love the vintage charm of this historical landmark building and if you enjoy boutique hotels, historic architecture and pastries for your breakfast then you should definitely give this lovely Evanston hotel a try. My bed was so comfortable and it was easy for me to get s good night of sleep and enjoy the ambiance of this darling hotel. Breakfast is something you shouldn't miss because the French pastry chef cooks these decadent chocolate croissants from early morning till 10 am. The Margarita European Inn is a darling hotel with character and great attention to detail. You won't regret choosing this hotel especially if you love unique and beautiful surroundings.

The Margarita is best hotel in Evanston. Located in a quiet corner of downtown Evanston and previously a 1920s inn for professional women, it has been lovingly restored while maintaining its wonderful historic features, including an old-fashioned elevator, an elegant spacious parlor (where a complimentary and delicious full breakfast is served), and a well stocked library. Reserved parking is available 300 feet away for only $10/day, which is cheap for downtown Evanston. The rooms are very well furnished with comfortable beds and beautifully remodeled bathrooms.
