Detailed Reviews
We recently stayed at Byron's "Resort" where a work colleague and I shared a 2 bedroom self contained unit. The unit was clean and tidy and the location of the 'resort was superb.
The place could do with a lot of maintenance however, like fixing cracks in the ceiling, giving the Courtyard a good water blasting and really cleaning the exterior of the buildings. Although the pool wasn't heated it was still, really clean.
The laundry room/spa/sauna/gym building was a real let down, it was disgustingly filthy, dark and dingy, it felt like you had entered the bowels of the whole complex.
I wouldn't recommend this venue to family, friends or work colleagues in its current state.

We stayed over the 3rd to the 5th with 2 kids and a caravan and had a great weekend. The pool was warm and the friendly staff very helpful. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we meet some really nice families all enjoying themselves like us. At night we walked around talking to some of the permanents and it was super casual and we meet some real characters. Not sure what " lesmcqeen" is talking about but if you want absolute silence at night maybe don't stay in a motor camp try a Library...
To us a holiday is about the people you meet and we meet some hard case characters with a relaxed attitude making for a great time.
Would definitely go back.

First time in our caravan for just a weekend away so came here because friends were going plus it's only an hour away. The pitch was a good size, room for our caravan awning & car & quite private. What I was disappointed with was we had to pick dog mess from the pitch before we could pitch the awning. The 2 sites in front of us both had dogs, one had 2 the other one, the 2 weren't too bad as they kept themselves to themselves but the other dog was on a long chain so could make it's way to the front of our site which scared my children, the entrance to our pitch was pretty narrow with a car parked either side then to have dogs on either side wasn't good. We also came back one day to find fresh dog mess which again we had too clean up, I don't expect to do this if I don't have a dog, there was also a residents dog that was off leash the whole time right next to the playground, dogs are unpredictable & as such should be on a lead. Apart from this the place was clean enough although the bathrooms didn't get cleaned whilst we were there & the floor could have done with a wash but all in all it was OK & having a fun weekend away with friends more than made up for the other bits. The restaurant on site was good too with a good kids menu & nice food

We arrived after about 7pm and got a pitch. It was about $40 a night if I remember correctly and it wasn't worth it at all. All the pitches were flooded which isn't brilliant because we had to pitch a tent. We eventually found a pitch that wasn't as flooded as the others and then went into the 'kitchen' to make dinner. The kitchen should be bulldozed - old, broken appliances from the 60s, a very sticky table, dead insects everywhere, just being in the kitchen made me shudder, but as we had a tent, we had nowhere else to hang out. The kitchen was really that bad and for a place that charges an arm and a leg to stay for a night it's unacceptable. I don't think the kitchen had seen a cleaner for at least a decade. The bathrooms too were gross and the state of the showers made me rethink taking a hot shower. We slept pretty badly given the flooded state of the pitches and soon as it was light made a beeline straight for the exit. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Yes, rarely would I write a review that recommends the use of a bulldozer! Someone needs to take responsibility for this hideous and outdated motor camp that dares to call itself a resort! Found in the 1970's in NZ, this place would have been a hit! Time has moved on but this place hasn't. Run down, poorly managed, dirty and in needs of a complete refurbishment. The restaurant is well below the level anyone would expect. Avoid and look elsewhere or be prepared for disappointment.

On 10th February 2014, my husband and I booked one night’s accommodation, for Saturday 15th Feb 2014, in a studio unit. As we expected to arrive after 10.00pm and planned to leave before 8.00am the next morning, we paid the full accommodation price ($120) on booking. The booking confirmation and instructions for a late entry were emailed to me on 10th February.
On arriving at the Byron’s Resort a little earlier than expected (~8.45pm), we stopped at the office and were told that our studio unit had been given to another person.
The unit we were then allocated constructed of painted concrete blocks and felt Spartan. There were two upright chairs in front of the oldest TV I have seen in recent times; the curtains were unevenly hung at the top; the furnishings and kitchenette were in good condition but very old fashioned; the kitchenette felt as though it had not upgraded for decades; the bed was extremely hard, the lighting was dim; and there was one sachet of milo and one sachet of hot chocolate for two people. In addition, the courtyard window was unable to be left open for ventilation as the unit could easily be entered through this window. The only ventilation was a small window in the very small bedroom. The motel felt very old fashioned and was not designed or furnished for the comfort and enjoyment of guests. All in all, our stay was not a satisfying experience and it is most unlikely that we would recommend this resort to other people.
On the positive side, the unit was clean and the bed was tidily made – although the coverings were very heavy.
I did forward this letter to the management in February 2014 (it is now August 2014), but I have had no response.
On the flip side, we have just stayed at the Turangi Bridge Motel and it was a most pleasurable experience.

I hate placing bad reviews, but feel this is warranted. The owners treat customers as if they are a nuisance, disturbing the owners by using their facilities. Most awful custom, almost militaristic in enforcing the hundreds of rules, like saying 'use OUR facilities, just don't enjoy it'.Thankfully close enough to the beach so the kids could enjoy the holiday uninhibited away from the resort without the constant fear that the owners might appear to spoil the fun.

We have the same rules and amount of rules as every other holiday park. The rules are there so everyone can enjoy themselves in peace. There will always be some parents and their children who do what they like, when we get a complaint this has to be addressed.

We stayed here for 1 night during the xmas break and we were pretty disappointed overall. Check in is 2pm onwards, we were still sitting in the car waiting to get into our room at 3pm with 2 very restless bored tiny tots.
The lady at reception was blunt, rude, unhelpful and should not be working in customer service where visitors are/should be no.1 to the business. Not good kiwi hospitality.
The room was clean, however the furniture was run down and grotty and very outdated.
On a positive note the facilites are ideal for families and the location is fantastic across the road from the dairy and the beach.
Would I come back? Probably not.

I agree with traceyralder, that this place capitalises on the fact that there is little accommodation in Otaki. We only chose this place as we needed somewhere easy to be near an unwell family member and the other two options in Otaki town looked no better.
On booking over the phone I was told that it was never peak season, something I would never admit to if I were the hotelier! But that probably should have warned me off.
We arrived dark cold night, to barely lit office, where were told we had to pay the balance of our bill (already debited one night at booking) in order to get the key. This was before we even got to see the room. Hmm. We were it seemed the only ones staying as it was pitch dark walking to our room and freezing inside. We even had to carry our own milk? Friendly enough host otherwise, though she gave us the wrong key and we had to return to the office, again in the dark! Felt a bit Bates motel really.
Room was very clean and tidy but sad and dated in all respects. Door was bent and a window was missing a stay. No security locks, which considering some of the neighbours in Otaki Beach, would be advisable. Don't leave anything valuable on site or in plain view would be my recommendation.
Bed was firm and very comfortable. Good quality sheets, though one pillow protector cover not there. Portacot was smelly and musty.
Oodles of hot water due to recent gas water conversion. That was probably the highlight of my stay!
Have to say it, unless the owners invest, this place will be gone within a year or two.
Didn't try the restaurant as we had a grumpy toddler in tow and didn't wish to inflict him on other diners, not that there were many! The menu looked expensive for the contents and setting, and everything came with Waikanae organic salad - how original!
Next time we have to go to Otaki we will be trying to find a holiday home via one of the many bach sites that now exist, as some looked more suitable in standard, and convenience.

Response from Byrons R, Owner at Byron's Resort
Responded 11 Jun 2013
Hi, thank you for your review. We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay. In winter it is dark and cold outside (which is out of our control) you also stayed when we had snow on the hills (our first cold snap for the year) and everywhere in the country was cold on those days. If you don't want to go out in the dark and cold either you should check-in before it is dark or book a hotel with heated corridors for your comfort. Your comments on our accommodation will be taken into account. But as for making comments on things you know nothing about such as the restaurant (which as stated you didn’t even use), our neighbours (we live in a very safe community who are horrified to read your comments about it), and other accommodation in the area (that you have never even seen), this is unfair and you should stick to reviewing what you have experienced not what you think of things you know nothing about.

The amenities are OK, but the thing that spoilt our entire long weekend in our tent was the white-trash drunks in the permanent cabins. They refused to see that 10.00 p.m. was the time for quiet time to begin for the campground, and stayed up drinking, swearing, listening to loud music and smoking pot. There is obviously no warden who keeps an eye on this, and I think the owners react in a "shocked" manner every time they are told that this happens. We have heard from another campground locally that this is commonplace for Byron's, that there is a lot of bickering and in-fighting between the owners of permanent cabins, and that they are used to treating casual campers with utter disdain. Avoid at all costs. We shall not be returning.

Thankyou for this feedback. We have sorted out what site owners have been causing problems and this will no longer happen. We do have a 24 hour phone number on the front of the office door for problems after hours, it is a shame this was not made use of.
