Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Oh, the shower! We stayed in the Crystal Cave, which has a sauna, whirlpool, and steam room with luxury shower. I could see on the website that there was a normal showerhead, and the six heads built into the wall. The bonus surprise was the waterfall feature, where water pours from near the ceiling. This was so soothing for sore muscles. We spent quite a few hours in there, and will return for this special shower.

Our room was clean and smelled nice. Though it was a smoking room, there was no lingering smoky odor. There was also an air cleaner in the room. Things appeared cleaned and sanitized, which was comforting during the covid scare.
Staff may have been behind on the deep cleaning, however, like a dust bunny and spider webs in the crystal grotto over the bed.

The area was nice. I didn't worry about my car in the lot.

Some things felt cheap and dated. Room keys are still old fashioned metal keys, rather than safer keycards. Signs both in the lobby and room warn that there is a $200 fine for smoking cannabis (and yet we could smell someone toking anyway). A sign warned to count your luxurious towels, because they would be counted when you leave. The public can come in and use the pool for a fee during the day.

But hey, it's fantasy suites for working class folks. It's not a resort or spa for the elite. I expect things to be clean and maintained, and I don't want to hear the room next door. The Sunset Inn delivered on those things.

And oh, the hydrotherapy! Did I mention that the shower was fantastic?

Now for the heads up tip- Our hot tub started running on its own at 2:30 am while we were sound asleep...two nights in a row. The first night woke us with a shock. The second was less scary... The front desk called this purging-the whirlpool expels any water left in the jets. This is great. I don't want someone else's water. However, when you are in a room alone and things start running on their own, it will wake you with a start... So, if you choose to stay, maybe I can save you the night fright by sharing my experience.

First off let me say the people there go out of their way to help you. Because my wife and I both have issues walking long distances and stairs, a maintenance man who works there named Joe came out to our car, loaded our baggage and took it to our room. He also let us use an elevator not normally allowed to be used by guests. By the way, Joe repeated his help when we checked out. The room was everything that was showed on the web site, just beautiful. The only issues we had were trying to get out of the Jacuzzi. We both have knee and leg issues (both of us are in our 60's) and there was nothing to grab onto when trying to get out. In the steam shower (which is wonderful) it takes a while to figure out which knob controls which shower head. Also, something on the floor to keep it from being so slippery would be a big help. Other than those 2 issues we had a great time and highly recommend trying the Paradise suite.

The 24 hour pool and hot tub is worth it if you work third or second shift or have trouble sleeping, or just a night owl or just want a swim after the kids are down. Good gym, antique place close, Weldon Springs State park close drive- easy short trails.
They have some smoking rooms and it does sometimes smell of it. I believe they are working on that. They allow certified service pets, so if allergic be clear the room must be a no pet room. (The laws have changed, regarding service animals).
Owners are responsive, good folk, make expectations clear and problems known before posting.
Fantasy suites are for couples only, are very$$$ expensive. A good honeymoon or anniversary choice.

I booked the room 3or 4 weeks before I was arriving. I flew in from Austin Texas to come to the room and it was horrible, they have roaches there the toilet wasn’t working and the room was way smaller, very small then what it look like on the website. Then I talk to the owner and he’s talking about it’s nothing he can do but give me a $50 game room credit for a gaming when I don’t even live in Decatur Illinois I live in Austin Texas.

Check-in and out was extremely easy. We stayed in the Crystal Cave room and were blown away by how beautiful the room was. The sauna and the shower were our favorite parts.
The only downside I can find is that the jacuzzi would randomly turn on to dry itself, which is great for cleanliness, but awful when it scares the living beejezus out of you. Clearly, that’s not the hotel’s fault so it doesn’t take away from the review.
The free breakfast they provide is great. They offer a lot more than some hotels do.
I’m already planning a trip back up just to stay again. It was that amazing.

Stayed there for years and brought in a lot of people for fishing tournaments as well and never paid more than $65 - $80. This time it jumped up to $112 for one King bed with two adults. Room smelled of smoke and I made a not of it with the front desk, ashtrays in the room, and screaming patrons all night across the hall. Ridiculous price for a one King room. Especially when other motels in the town are in the $50 - $60 range and not any more dated as this one. Thoroughly disappointed and will never stay there again.

I called to ask about pool prices since it is advertises that the pool is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I wanted to reserve that back room and use the pool and the lady I talked to was the worst. She yelled and didn't explain anything and just over all had a poor attitude. One word replies. I work with the public daily and you do the best to answer all your guest questions with out attitude, I asked questions and she would just say well I don't know what to tell you. We used to come at least 3-5 times a year from Lincoln, IL to swim and you can bet that we will be looking for new options now. This would have been 20+ people you could have mad money from and probably even a tip.

I do NOT recommend! If it was possible to give a zero or negative rating, I would. I stayed in the South of the Border suite on Friday 11/19 and I woke up at 2am to hear a mouse chewing on the snacks I had brought and left on a table, which was right next to my bags. Later we discovered mouse feces on the box spring at the head of the bed, which means this is an ongoing issue and something they should be aware of if the rooms were being cleaned properly. When I called the front desk, they said there was nothing they could do except offer me a regular room for the night, couldn’t even come do something about the situation or confirm nothing had crawled into my bag. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I have gotten the run around from the staff, management and the owners ever since. I had to call them nearly every day for over a week as neither the manager nor the owner would return my phone calls. In the end, the most they would do is offer me $50 off my next stay. No one should have to pay for the experience I had and I certainly will not be back.

Will never stay here again. We had a random $300 additional charge added to our card on file without any reasoning as to why. Would not recommend and will never stay here again. Also, the rooms smell horrifically like smoke.

My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights, we had never been here before but had been trying to stay on one of the Fantasy Suites for quite awhile, but schedules just wouldn't work, so I was excited to finally be able to stay. We booked the Rainforest room for 2 nights. Got to the hotel to check in and got out room key. Once we got in the room, realized we were in the South of the Border room, but didn't think anything about it, I have stayed in hotels who put you in a different room for one reason or another. The room was amazing! About 9:30 PM the phone is ringing but we didn't answer in time, next thing you know someone is at the door. I am in the hot tub so he answers the door and comes back to tell me they gave us the wrong room and the other couple is celebrating their anniversary and wants their room. Her name is similar to mine, he told them it was going to happen that night but we would change in the morning, no problem. We had a good laugh and enjoyed the rest of our night, everyone makes mistakes right? We get up the next morning get packed up and go to the front desk. I have to explain what happened because they had no idea. I ask her how long it will be because I don't want to have to wait until 3 to get back in a room, she says it will only take about an hour, so we decide to go eat. 3 hours later and I call them, she very rudely tells me she said she would call when our room was ready and it is not. Finally at 3 PM, check in time, we go back and they are like, we were just getting ready to call you. I explained this was not ok, we did not plan on leaving the room but understood mistakes happen and that I was very accommodating, but basically being kicked out of a room I paid for, for the entire day I paid for was not ok. She tried to turn it around on me, didn't you notice it wasn't the room you booked, I explained to her, this was your mistake, not mine. She than says, well didn't you go eat, I said not for 5 hours we did not, and again told her this was your mistake not mine. She said there is nothing I can do, you will have to talk to the owner and he is not here, but I will send him to you when he gets here. Check out time the next morning and I still have not heard from him and of course he is not there in the morning. I still have not heard from him. I am extremely disappointed they did not make this right because the rooms were really nice and relaxing, but will not be going back since they are not willing to make their mistakes right.

No, the de-smoking does not take all the smoke smell away. If a nonsmoking room is available, I would recommend booking that.

I believe check in is at 3pm but if your room is ready you should be able to get in before that time. Check out is by 11am. Hotel staff is friendly and should be able to answer your questions
