Situated in the historic New York Life Insurance Building originally built in 1894, Kimpton Gray Hotel takes its name from the Georgia Gray marble that's lent the structure a sense of sophistication for well over a century. The ornate architecture on the granite exterior and in the lobby - with Art Deco light fixtures - is juxtaposed against contemporary-styled rooms with crisp furnishings. Here in the Financial District, the neighborhood buzzes during the 9-to-5 workday and hosts chic city dwellers in the evening - which is just the time to visit our on-site, in-the-know hangouts: Vol. 39, a sophisticated lobby bar with wine, champagne and caviar, and Boleo, the top-of-the hotel bar and lounge with retractable roof.

I am so grateful for the entire welcoming staff that greeted me with warmth and made my stay so relaxing and special. Upon check in everyone knew my name (as per the norm at all Kimptons) and I was deeply grateful that my room type was upgraded to the most beautiful accommodation-- the one bedroom spa suite with a huge soaking tub and separate living room area. The Gray is extremely classy and when you enter your room everything is just adorable and reminds you of a private condo dwelling rather than a sterile hotel room. The spa soaking tub can easily fit two people but just for myself it was so spacious I didn't want to leave it!
My bed was incredibly comfortable and I had a really peaceful sleep yesterday evening which I honestly needed. During this pandemic there's nothing more comforting than a soothing Staycation. During my stay masks must now be worn by staff members and guests in all public areas so please don't forget these simple rules while you walk around the hotel corridors and elevators.
There are no amenities during this pandemic but you can definitely ask the staff for a glass of wine in lieu of their traditional wine hour. Mini bars aren't available in our rooms but you can always come downstairs to the lobby and request whatever snack you'd like and they will have a variety for you to choose.
The hotel Gray also has a wonderful tapas restaurant known as Bolero but they weren't open on Monday during my stay. Bolero should be open Wednesday through Sunday so if you wish to enjoy their dishes try reserving a stay during those days if an in house dining experience is important to you.
I truly recommend you ask for any of the beautiful spa rooms with the large soaking tub especially if you are seeking a decadent escape. The staff here makes you feel like family and I always have a hard time checking out because the ambiance here is so beautiful and nurturing.

The Kimpton Gray is a beautifully designed modern hotel in an historic building. The staff was extremely attentive and went well above and beyond the norm to make my stay wonderful. A perfect example: I called Saturday at 7am to ask about room service breakfast before I had to depart to work on a photo shoot. They don't offer room service before 9am on the weekend, but offered to have someone get breakfast and coffee from Starbucks for me. When I told them to charge it to my room, they said I wouldn't have to cover it and they apologized for not offering in-room dining early on the weekends.
The wine social hour in the evenings was a great touch too. I found the bed extremely comfortable. And the room was quiet even though it was close to the elevator. They also text you after you arrive to make sure you have everything you need.

Dear katystyle, Thank you for taking the time to write this kind review! We are so thrilled you enjoyed your stay and was able to experience the Gray! The Gray was built in 1984 and with the Grey Georgia Marble throughout is just stunning! Glad we were able to surprise and delight you for a Saturday morning treat! Also the wine hour... Who would want to miss that. After a hard day at work stop by the lobby for a much needed glass of wine. Hope we are able to host you again soon! Cheers, Alexis

We stayed at the Kimpton Gray Hotel in September. We took the train and the hotel is within walking distance of Union Station, which is great. The room was clean, modern, and surprisingly spacious with large windows. The hotel staff let us leave our suitcases there prior to check-in so that we could walk around the city without them - we appreciated that amenity a lot! The hotel was also very quiet, and if you're willing to walk a few blocks, there are quite a few stores and restaurants nearby. We will definitely stay at the Kimpton Gray Hotel the next time we're in Chicago.

From the absolute most centralized location in the City, to perhaps the cleanest and most updated property in the area, to the size of the guest rooms and bathrooms, this hotel checked all of the boxes. We were quite pleased with the room, as many downtown hotel rooms are cramped (to say the least) and receive a lot of traffic, so understandably look a bit worn. In the case of the Kimpton Gray, the room was spacious and everything from carpet to furnishings looked practically brand new.

There were ample elevators (also sometimes an issue with other downtown hotels) - you never wait long for a car.

The common areas are well appointed and impeccably kept.

This is one of the nicest hotels in or near the Loop.

Short mini vacation in mid May.to Chicago with out dog . We liked the cleanliness, the great location (we were able to walk to many, many places)the building was beautiful and our dog liked that they furnished him a nice dog bed.😊. The staff were attentive but any needs had to be requested including towels or other basics (COVID 19 rules). Parts of the hotel were not functioning- again, COVID related. The bathroom was a little scary for us older adults since there was nothing to grab onto in the shower if you slipped- a necessary safety feature no matter how old you are!!

We will definitely return to Chicago & The Gray would be our hotel choice!😊

We booked a block of rooms for our November 2019 wedding at the Kimpton Gray Hotel because of its location (convenient and quiet on Thanksgiving weekend) and amenities. The staff in the hospitality area were amazing, responsive, and excelled at their job . As someone who was stressing out over a number of last minute issues before the wedding, they put me at ease that they had everything handled. Our trust was not misplaced.

Once our guests arrived, they all commented on how wonderful the hotel was, the amazing rooms, and the friendly staff. For our own experience, the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and celebrate. Thank you for an amazing experience!

HI Fellow (Pandemic) Travelers,
We landed at the Kimpton Gray Hotel in Chicago and can't rave enough about the eager to please, professional and friendly staff at this establishment. From the moment we arrived they have gone out of their way to make us feel comfortable, despite the challenges of traveling during Covid. Crystal, Bobby, Alexis and Lucas, as well as the cleaning staff, all bent over backwards for us. They even did our laundry themselves because their outside service is not operational at the moment! They referred us to great eating venues. The rooms are well-appointed and we enjoyed the well-preserved historic aspects of the building. Highly recommend this Kimpton for anyone traveling to Chicago. Thanks! Lizzie M.

We noticed that the hotel hand hand prints on our door and fuzz in our bed. We had just gotten back from walking all day and were exhausted. I got grossed out in the morning. There was no hand soap and splatters of toothpaste everywhere. The floor had dried ... something around the toilet and hairs on the folded hand towels. The final straw was my husband saying the floor felt weird and realized he was standing on a huge dried stain of puke. I felt so sick to my stomach that we stayed. It was clear no one had cleaned or restocked since we had been there. It’s a beautiful facility. I am amazed that it is so dirty. You’d want to enjoy the neat elevator or hallways but then realized they are covered in filth. So disappointed. What is more telling is that the staff hate their jobs and never asked once if we enjoyed our stay. I remained friendly and waited for them to ask so I could share, but they pushed the stay along with every other guest.

Dear cklewicki, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Gray Hotel. I am so very sorry to hear that your stay was anything less than stellar. I am investigating the items and working directly with the team. This is not the level of feedback we are known for or the provided service. We are continually working on improvements as more travelers are working their way to Chicago. Adapting with the times is something hospitality has been doing throughout this past year and this will be a continuous item to work on. Again, Thank you for the feedback as this has been shared with our teams to ensure we are executing in all the right areas. All the best, Alexis Napoleon Front Office Manager

We love Kimpton properties and this was our first at The Gray and it did not disappoint. The location was fairly quiet for a weekend night in Chicago (a nice change from the hustle and bustle of River North), but was still close to everything you could want to go to. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The room was unique, clean, and comfortable (love the Kimpton Mini-bars in the room too). The cocktail bar, Vol. 39 was stellar and the drinks were so good (and strong) we almost didn't make it to our concert ;-).

At The Gray you'll be comfortable, feel like you have privacy, be taken care of, and drink good drinks! What more could you want!

Additionally, we are currently planning another stay for St. Patrick's Day weekend and had a package with The Gray to walk in the parade. The parade has unfortunately been cancelled, but it has not stopped the sales coordinator at The Gray, Lucas, from being very hospitable and responsive and ensuring us we'll be taken care of for our stay. We're still very much looking forward to the stay. Fantastic service and hospitality that have definitely jumped The Gray to the top of our list for Chicago hotels!

I'm writing this review as a means of saying thank you to the entire staff here that made me feel special and incredibly welcomed here at the Gray hotel.
I had a rough week and decided I needed a treat so I requested an upgrade and they were kind enough to reserve a beautiful junior suite with a large soaking tub so I could indulge in several long baths for my brief stay.
If you can book a suite it's an extraordinary experience and the bath is charming and extremely vintage looking so you feel like you're walking into a magical world that's zen and calming for your spirit.
Bobby always has a kind smile for me and I was even given a complimentary bottled cocktail 🍸 that the staff has created and bottled to raise money for leukemia research.

The Gray hotel is a historic landmark and the ambiance here is both beautiful and comforting and the staff makes sure you feel special from your arrival to your departure.

I was extremely happy that I finally had a chance to dine at Boleo because during my past few stays their restaurant had limited hours and times. This time I checked into the Gray on Friday so luckily I could sit down to enjoy a delicious dinner of tapas and great service without needing advanced reservations or a dress code.

My stay left me feeling completely uplifted and restored and if you're an illinois resident definitely take advantage of special discounts offered for Kimpton members and enjoy a mini vacation in the city!
