Affordable Style in Chicago's Chic Lincoln Park Located in Chicago's affluent Lincoln Park, the Chicago Getaway Hostel is rewriting the house rules on hostel style. Policies once etched in stone are being cast aside in favor of fresher, friendlier approach. Membership fees are out and hotel-like amenities are in at this stately 1928 Georgian Revival landmark that, ironically, returns to its early 20th century roots as a boardinghouse for women. Today, all guests are welcome to enjoy free breakfast, free WiFi, free linens, free housekeeping, a 24/7 chef-caliber kitchen and a BYOB policy. Add nightly events like pub crawls, brewery tours and barbecues and it's easy to see why Chicago Getaway is fast becoming the city's favorite spot for affordable short-term and extended-stay accommodations.

Basic accommodations in a top notch neighborhood. Easy to get to anywhere on the South side or the North side from this hostel.
Also like that guests can store food in the refrigerator, freezer, and cupboard areas of the large kitchen.
The only drawback is that the showers can be a little slippery, and this visit, the water was slow to warm up.

I chose this hostel based on its low prices and proximity to the train, which turned out to be a great experience. The hostel was very clean and the overall design/decor style made it feel more like an upscale hotel with shared rooms than an average hostel, and having access to such nice shared spaces for a $29/night dorm bed was an excellent value.

The kitchen is large and provides plenty of refrigerator and pantry space, but there is no accessible freezer. I had one staff member tell me I could use a freezer that was in a locked room, only to be told later by another staff member that I actually wasn't supposed to use it and the other staff member made a mistake when I asked to access it. They also aren't allowing cooking right now and only let you use the microwave to prepare food, so keep these points in mind when deciding what kind of food to bring.

They do actually provide breakfast at this time, unlike many hostels/hotels, which was a decent selection of waffles, bagels, cereal, coffee, etc.

The desk staff seemed a little...aloof, but the housekeeping staff was friendly.

There are large lockers in the rooms, and coin laundry and detergent vending machines are provided.

The location in the Lincoln Park neighborhood felt completely safe, and the hostel's street and nearby streets are filled with beautiful buildings and trees. The surrounding area/walk from the train was much cleaner than other parts of Chicago and had far fewer homeless people. There is also a large outdoor patio area, which seems to be fairly uncommon in city hostels and also felt safe.

This hostel is located in a quiet and safe neighborhood. It's also surrounded by a lot of good places to eat. The Fullerton station is 10-15mins away (walking). It's also very convenient. The staff (Andrew, Ashley, & Joaquin) were very patient & helpful.

The room is a decent size and clean. We chose a private room with shared bath. Breakfast is provided daily. We had mini donuts, cereal (2 options), & banana. You're also allowed to buy small groceries & cook your food. They provide bins where you can place your food (don't forget to label, ask the staff for sticker labels).

Our overall stay was great! I might get a room with a bathroom the next time we return.

This place is very clean with extremely friendly workers and fast Wi-Fi.

I had a private room that was very very clean upon check-in and all the common areas were quiet and clean. I was very appreciative of the extremely friendly staff that I interacted with at every point during my stay. It was clear that they all went above and beyond to make me feel welcome, respected and appreciated. Although I missed breakfast, the young man who was cleaning the kitchen, was more than happy to help me make breakfast and taught me how to say apple juice in French!

The young men that checked me in, Waleed and Langston, were sooo nice and made me feel like VIP.

A manager, Vincent, went out of his way to make sure that I would have a private area to have my Zoom class in, even after I checked out.

This hostel is in a perfect location, walking distance to a bunch of cool restaurants and a very nice part of Lincoln Park in Chicago. Highly recommend!

The hostel is big and airy. We stayed twice in November and December. The rooms were both clean, large and warm. We had an ensuite bathroom which had abundant hot water. The fridge and microwave were useful. The hostel was close to the transport links and there are a lot of restaurants and take aways nearby. Very convenient for the zoo and lake.
Breakfast in November was porridge, fruit and toast when we came back in December it was pastries. The kitchen that can be used by guests had a fridge and shelves for your own food. There were pots and pans if you wanted to cook.
I would definitely go back if I was in Chicago for the price it was really good.

Hostel was secure. Staff were friendly. There are lockers in each of the rooms. 1st floor bathrooms only have shower curtains, where as on other floors there are more secure doors in the bathrooms for showers. Breakfast can be a bit chaotic closer to the end time, but there is a good selection. There are plenty of space in the kitchen and cubby holes to place food (make sure it's labelled with labels provided and stored correctly.) There is also a water filter inside the kitchen for drinking water. About a 5-10 minute walk from the Brown line. Close to the Zoo and other attractions. Plenty of places nearby to eat.

We had opted for a private room with a shared bathroom. Small downside on the quality of the mattresses which were really very soft. The bathrooms were clean for both men and women and I rarely ran into people in them. On the other hand, be careful at breakfast because there is a real rush every morning and the room is quickly full. As a result, we preferred to take our breakfast elsewhere even though it was included in the price.

We stayed here for 4 nights over the marathon weekend in a private room. Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious with a great shower. It was also very quiet as it backed onto the courtyard (room 303). The hostel has everything you need. Breakfast choice was restricted but the coffee was great and we were more than happy with cereal and toast. It’s in a great location - a 10 min walk to Fullerton station in one direction and a 15 min walk to Lincoln park in the other direction. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby. We loved Prost for beers and had a great meal at Parsons. We would definitely recommend this hostel, it’s fab!

We spent two nights in a private room at the Getaway Hostel. The room was very basic, offering just a bunk bed and a small desk. The bathroom and kitchen facilities were shared, as we would expect in a hostel.

The kitchen was great and kept very clean by the attentive staff, and the system for storing personal food items worked well (although that ultimately depends on the guests following the rules). The bathroom was kept clean as well. The common room provided some fun activities to kill time on rainy winter days, such as books, a few games and a pool table.

If we would have to mention any negatives, it would be that the guests came and went during the night with little regard to keeping quiet. While this isn’t directly the hostels fault, we didn’t notice any signage reminding guests to keep the noise levels down during the late hours (though we may have missed it). Additionally, the blankets provided in the room were very thin and not quite warm enough for winter. We did not ask for thicker blankets since we only stayed for two nights, so I can’t say whether or not they would’ve been available on request.

In conclusion, we enjoyed our stay. While there were a couple of areas for improvement, they were relatively minor, and it's important to keep expectations realistic when choosing a hostel over a hotel.

It was clean and quiet. Free breakfast was available. Nice, safe neighborhood, very close to public transport and a large number of restaurants and shops. It would have been nice to have a towel rack and shelves for shampoo in the shower so I didn't have to put everything on the floor and shelves for the top bunks so I didn't have to sleep with my phone and water bottle in bed with me. Beds were not super comfortable. But overall great for the price, would stay there again.
