First impressions can mean a lot and the Peninsula did not disappoint. From the people at the reception desk to the the folks I communicated with on the telephone, the staff was on the ball. The entire property is clean and well maintained. The room was good sized and well appointed with a comfy bed, large television, dressing area, a soaking tub, separate shower and water closet. The work space was ample and equipped with a printer/scanner/fax machine. The coffee maker worked great and the touch screen technology pad controlled the room’s lighting and offered a chat feature with the hotel’s staff. Great place for work and relaxation, ideal downtown location.

As a celebrity chef, I travel a bunch. In one year I can rack up the frequent flyer miles and hit at least 20 cities. While staying in Chicago I had the opportunity to stay at the Peninsula. Not only is it in a great part of Chicago, but very close to incredible restaurants all within walking distance. The rooms, the accomidations and everything about the hotel is top notch. I particularly enjoyed the motion sensors in the room that activated the lights and the television as soon as you entered the room. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and will assist your every need,

This is certainly one of the establishments on the world hotel scene. Everything about the hotel is top notch. But above everything is the service. Every little detail is considered and dealt with. For example, if you are reading a book, they will leave you a bookmark. If you're phone charger is left they will neatly wind up the wires. The food is also excellent top to bottom. Staying at most hotels is a place to rest your head, staying at the Peninsula is an experience in itself.

I love visiting Chicago and visit at least three times a year. I normally stay at The Langham but decided to try The Peninsula as both hotels repeatedly top the best in the US rankings. The lobby, restaurants and common areas bolster an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The rooms are standard and if it were a business trip, I would have rated it three/half to four stars. While not as modern in architecture and design, the hotel makes an admirable effort by leveraging technology to control room settings. Admittedly, I thought it was a tad overkill — one or two tablets would suffice — instead of the three in the room. The bathroom decor is aged with a small walk-in shower, but there is a spacious closet area at the bathroom entry. The biggest drawback which resulted in a three star review was the lack of attention to pre-arrival requests. I communicated housekeeping requests in advance for elevated attention to linens/towels in addition to a pillow preference and both of those requests were sadly overlooked. True bespoke service not only provides this attention to detail but excels at doing so seamlessly. The Peninsula Chicago did not live up to that standard.

I’ll start by saying I debated for hours between The Peninsula and The Langham before making a reservation. When I checked in the doorman wasn’t overly helpful and the front desk was a little curt. No one provided an explanation about the property and services and none of the COVID protocols listed were followed.

The property and rooms are attractive though it could definitely use a little TLC. There were gouges in the wood workspace, scuffs around the baseboards, and scratches in the leather tech valet.

The bigger problem, however, was cleanliness. My first room was not cleaned properly between guests. The amenities were half empty and there was a yet-to-dry moisturizer thumbprint on the bathroom vanity. There was also noticeable debris on the workstation glass and phone.

The tech worked well for a hotel, but the bedside tablets were Galaxy A models from 2014 that clearly needed to be replaced. The battery would drain 20-30% in standby mode when not on the charger. Chromecast reset itself every half hour and the remote in the workstation drawer wouldn’t charge; the last is an issue the housekeeper should be checking, especially before putting it on the nightstand during turndown.

I get things happen but, at $500 a night, those problems should be few and far between. Extensive room wear is not acceptable at a luxury property; put it out of service and make the necessary repairs. Don’t put guests in a beat up rooms.

The biggest problem by far, however, was service. Room service just left my order right inside the door after asking is they should set it up in the room; as someone who had back surgery a few weeks ago, pushing a heavy 35ft from the door to the table wasn’t an easy task (nor enjoyable when you’re paying $100 for lunch). When I’d call the front desk or concierge with basic questions there wasn’t any urgency or even the thought about going the extra mile. I asked where I could find the toothpaste I like; there was an immediate “I don’t know” without any type of “I’ll check into it” follow up—by the way, I found the toothpaste literally across the street so it wouldn’t have been hard for them to grab it and charge my room.

Service was an ongoing issue though. I’d use PenChat and it would take 10 minutes for another “I don’t know” type of reply. The phone would ring a half dozen times before it was picked up, and when I tried to call down at check out, I was put on hold for eight minutes and decided to just carry my stuff downstairs on my own—when I got to the desk, there was literally no one waiting. Not really the service I expected.

You can tell when a manager is passionate about their property; Staff is happy, service is top notch, and the property is pristine. The Peninsula was none of these. It is in dire need of change. I wouldn’t expect this poor of service and lax standards at a hotel that costs $100 a night; at $500, it’s simply inexcusable.

I clearly made the wrong choice on this trip and will pick The Langham next time.

This truly is a great hotel and deserving of all of the accolades it receives. We stayed for a 3 day weekend in August. The lobby and common spaces are beautiful. Check-in was friendly and efficient. The room. a Grand Deluxe King Room, was large and well appointed with a small sofa, table and chairs, a large open closet, nice bathroom (shower with amazing water pressure) and very comfortable bed with high quality linens and pillows. Only 2 small criticisms - 1) our room, 1831, was in front of roof/patio which would be great if it was a terrace to go out on, but as it is not, it just makes for a less good view and 2) there is a large double desk with FAX and printer which may have been great 10 years ago, but as people are using desks less and printers and FAX machines hardly at all, think the space would be better used for some sort of dresser because there is ample hanging space in the closet but only a few very small drawers very low in the closet to put clothes. Very well equipped gym. Nice indoor pool with dedicated family times. The Lobby restaurant was good, though somewhat slow for breakfast. The bar was fine, but prices are VERY high (even by luxury hotel standards). The truly stellar thing about the hotel is the thoughtfulness of the housekeeping- electric cords not in use are tied up, if they see eyeglasses, they leave lens clothes, everything is immaculately clean. Truly outstanding. The people at the door and at the front desk always greeted us with a smile and a hello. The hotel was busier overall and with more young kids than I prefer at a high end hotel but that is just my personal preference. Overall, the Peninsula is a wonderful hotel, and I won't hesitate to stay again.

We decided to celebrate our triple celebration with a staycation in a 5 star hotel,The Peninsula . That was an excellent hotel. We were greeted with a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! (We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary,my birthday and Father’s Day.)
The Suite was amazing! I appreciate using the tablets for temperature ,lighting, and television. The room had light control panels for every convenience ,the foyer ,dressing room, restroom, bedroom.
We used the room service for a delicious Continental breakfast and later ,a Chinese dinner .
Regarding the restroom(suite) : I enjoyed a soak in the tub ,loved the shower room ,and appreciated the separate toilet room.
The terry robes and slippers were a treat.
Of course ,making coffee was a delight. I appreciate their attention to detail ,China cups /saucers,not mugs were provided .
I had a shellac manicure with a Nella,if recall her name correctly. She did a great job on these poorly maintained hands.
Thanks for your professionalism!
In summary, if you want to be treated royally, go to The Peninsula. The staff is attentive, caring ,social, and professional.

You stay in a hotel like the Peninsula because you know what to expect and always get it. Space is beautiful, people are friendly and attentive and every request within reason is handled gracefully. Dan checked us in with a great attitude and the room we got was great . Good view. I loved all the smart room capabilities controlled by the ipad by the bed. Bed and Sheets were impossibly comfortable. We got some sun on the spa level and Blake was great up there taking car of what we needed.
All the Covid protocols were followed and I felt always that everything was clean The location is right on Michigan Ave across from Saks so you can't be in a better spot.

My first time in any Peninsula, and I’m now a big fan!

The Peninsula really felt like an oasis of tranquility in the bustling city. You felt immediately at peace entering the building.

Service was excellent, from valet to bellhops, front desk to housekeeping - we interacted with dozens of employees throughout and over the phone and everyone was pleasant and professional. Anything we needed was provided promptly. Room service (both dinner and breakfast) were delivered quickly and presented well.

Room was very nice. Stayed in a Michigan Ave suite and it was very comfortable. Some city noise but it wasn’t bad at all. Very minimal noise from the hallway. Had a great night of sleep.

The gym was also very nice. It was completely empty so I had the whole place to myself. Very clean and there were plenty of clean towels and water bottles provided.

Wish we didn’t have to leave, but thanks to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts we were able to stay until 4pm.

In Chicago I’ve stayed at the Langham, Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and JW Marriott and the Peninsula takes the cake (Langham is a close second).

First stay here and I was unsure what to expect. I don’t stay at Peninsula hotels often, preferring boutique places with character, but recent experiences persuaded me to ‘stay safe’ in an unfamiliar city.

First impressions: unremarkable from the street, and you take a lift up several floors from street level to the lobby. Check-in was efficient then another lift up to a high floor room.

The decor is classic modern, the layout good and the amenities excellent. Simple but modern lighting, easy to control, great iPads to operate everything, an excellent bathroom with large tub, and good wardrobe space and seating areas. You get the impression everything has been thought out properly, not compromised or done cheaply.

Service is excellent, the room service double Negroni probably gets the award for the most expensive I’ve ever had (over $60), laundry was returned nicely folded and wrapped the same day, and everything worked. You didn’t need a plumbing qualification to operate the shower. I used the 20th floor spa which was expensive but again first class.

Complaints: breakfast arrived 10 minutes late and the sink doesn’t hold water properly.

The room cost around $600 which after staying in other places recently (and elsewhere tonight) I thought was worth every penny.

This is a hotel I would recommend without hesitation.
