Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a family owned 58 hectare nature and wildlife reserve 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Get there from Cairns via a spectacular 45 minute drive along Captain Cook Highway. Elevated on stilts, 83 eco designed timber bungalows are discretely concealed within the forest canopy, blending in with the natural environment and feature ocean, mountain or forest views. Panoramic views are enjoyed from open-sided Osprey's Restaurant across the forest canopy and beyond to the Coral Sea. Guests and visitors dine amongst birds in the surrounding treetops, whilst enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly and attentive service. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Paths wind through rainforests and woodlands, connecting with secluded coves and beaches, passing through habitats for endemic birds, wildlife and flora. Guests enjoy complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours. A completely organic 650 tree coconut plantation is home to a unique coconut odyssey tour highlighting the extraordinary qualities of the 'tree of life'.

We were lucky to have been able to stay eight nights in total after arriving at Cairns to find the road closed (due to flooding) on way to our original accommodation. After a frantic internet search pulled over on side of road mid monsoon we found Thala. The lady on reception

Stayed 5 nights - did the coconut tour, star gazing and nature tour. Just loved this beautiful relaxing place. Our balcony overlooked the beach and stunning rainforest. The birds, lizards and other fauna came to say hi and the Osprey restaurant was great. The staff were super

A very special place both in the middel of the forest and with a beautiful beach. A nice relaxing place with beautiful walkways and nature. Even if we were here in the jellyfish-season and could enjoy the sea, we enjoyed it very much. No internet access in the cottages are great

We were there for 2 nights and I did not like at all. There were all of 12-18 people at the hotel and our rooms were quite a distance away plus Wi-FI was only in the lobby. The breakfast buffet was fine but the other meals were double in cost and had very limited menu. The

Thank you DianaN for your feedback. We are disappointed to learn that your visit to Thala was 'not very enjoyable' due to requiring a walk from your bungalow (complimentary 24hr buggy service is available across the resort), wifi only in the lobby (free wifi is available in the main lodge, lobby, restaurant, bar and lounge areas), limited menu (Daily Specials for lunch & dinner are offered as well as comprehensive three course menu) with prices on par with Port Douglas' best restaurants, and a guided nature tour that took you through a wooded area to view wildlife (which is where native wildlife live). We do hope you found the remainder of your Australian holiday enjoyable. Best wishes Johan Klindt

Hi Kyung thanks for your questions. We have a tour desk and very knowledgeable staff who will be able to advise the best Great Barrier Reef tours to suit your interests and budget. We'd be happy to help! Marine stingers are generally present across northern Australian waters from Nov to May. Stinger suits may provide some protection, though swimming is always at your own risk. We have two swimming pools as an alternative to ocean swimming. The qld.gov.au website has more information

Hiring a car is a good way to enjoy the area around Port Douglas, or you could catch an airport shuttle bus to Thala (both options should be pre-booked before arrival).

Hi Adrocked, as others have said, Thala is located on the beachfront and it's just a few mins walk to either Oak Beach or Pebbly Beach via the trails that meander throuugh the property. Some rooms are located closer to the beach, others are located closer to the Main Lodge

The weather between Xmas and New Year is usually hot and humid, as Thala beach is in the tropics. You would need to check with the resort about arriving on Xmas Day and leaving NY Day, they are both public holidays in Australia, but I don't imaging it would be a problem, as a lot of Aussies have holidays at this time.
