Nestled amidst stunning lake and waterfall scenery, Grandhotel Giessbach captivates guests with its historical elegance and picturesque setting. While many find the rooms clean and marvel at the breathtaking views, some guests note that they could benefit from updates and the addition of air conditioning. The hotel's service is generally acknowledged as friendly, yet experiences of inconsistency have been called out. Despite the enchanting atmosphere and professional service, a number of travelers question the value, pointing to high costs and additional charges.

staying at the giessbach was a blast from the past! it was so much fun arriving by boat on lake brienz and then taking the funicular up to the hotel. arriving at the base of the huge waterfall made the entire arrival very special.

the hotel is old and historic with much of the original decor...or at least it seems that way. we even had a sink in our room. our room was fine, not fancy but the view from the balcony was simply amazing. we were directly on the lake with a magnificent view of the entire waterfall, only a stones throw away. at night it was even illuminated. if you are looking for pristine interior and exteriors, and high style decor you will not find that here. it is an old historic hotel and the upkeep must me endless. what makes this place so special is the feeling of a past time and place. you feel like you've entered another century. the views are amazing and the grounds are huge and walkable.

the service is excellent. the front desk people were all so nice. we especially enjoyed working with melanie and venice. they were so warm, friendly, helpful, patient and knowledgeable. freddy the shuttle driver was great too.

the location of the hotel is not as convenient for trips to interlaken etc unless you have a car or are able to work around the shuttle schedule. it does not run on demand or even all day, so you have to work around that or the boat schedule.

we met people there who have been going every year for 20 years. it's a magical place.

The Grandhotel Giessbach impressed me in every way! The hotel has a luxury that I can accept because it is full of culture, warmth and friendliness. A piano player contributes to a pleasant atmosphere, how lovely it is to enjoy live music! The variety of dining rooms really appealed to me, everything is so beautifully maintained, with a lot of finesse and tact. The breakfast buffet really has something for everyone. As a vegan, I appreciated the New Roots cheese, among other things. What I was particularly pleased about was that the duvets in the room are Swiss quality and are not live plucked! Bravo! It's perfect down to the last detail! Thank you for showing so much respect for animals and our environment!

We spent 2 nights in this magical, historic hotel, full of stories.
The room was very practical, it overlooked the forest, a little away from the noise of the waterfall.
We ate both evenings in the hotel restaurants and took even more time to enjoy places with superb views of the waterfalls or the lake.
The welcome was very good both at the hotel and in the restaurants.
The weather being mild, we took advantage of the magnificent natural swimming pool and made a few excursions in the surrounding area, always using the magnificent funicular and boats on Lake Brienz.
The Nostalgia pass is very practical. The offer is generous.
Really recommend.

The location is unique and very beautiful. Unfortunately, the hotel does not meet 4-star standards. There was no minibar in the room, no hotel slippers, no comfort. The shower was really very small and the water ran generously into the bathroom when you showered. The bed squeaked with every little movement, making it impossible to sleep comfortably. Generally there was little space in the room. The staff were mostly unmotivated. You only get one room key, the door lock still has to be opened with a key in the old-fashioned way. Parking is impossible and annoying. You have to hand in your car key at reception because you have to park one behind the other in car parks. This means you get blocked in or block someone else. The food in the hotel restaurant was average, the waiting times between courses were far too long. At the breakfast buffet there was only open jam and butter, which not everyone finds hygienic. The price-performance ratio is not right at all.

It was really disappointing. We stayed 3 times in this hotel and the last visit showed us that service quality worsened in time. It was our anniversary and I asked a nice table for romantic dinner. We were offered to have a table at the entrance where people are waiting to be seated. I would expext at least a flower or a small table decoration, nothing!
Besides, the dinner was not really worth its price.

The room was very cold as the heater was not working. The hotel was very noisy because of housekeepers. We asked them to change our room as housekeeping room was right next to us and naturally it was so noisy. Instead of helping us, the reception chief told us that we need to pay extra as we used the room 2 hours and re-cleaning would be needed. She said they can warn the staff about the noise and we decided to remain in our room and 7:15 am we had to wake up due to same noisy housekeeping staff.

We paid more than 600 chf for a single night and like we had no issues, they charged us 184 chf extra. When I questioned that we found out it was a mistake. Of course no apology from the reception! Once upon a time it was a nice hotel

We will never visit them again!

Response from Grandhotel Giessbach, General Manager at Grandhotel Giessbach
Responded 27 Jan 2024
Dear Swiss Guest We sincerely apologize for the disappointing experience you had during your recent stay. We are sorry to hear about the issues with the dinner setting, room temperature, and disturbances caused by housekeeping. You booked you room with half board included which the service team unfortunately oversaw and booked the dinner again to your room. The additional charge from the Service team are inexcusable, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this error. As an apology on spot, we not only cancelled the double-booked dinner, but also the drinks you consumed that night. We also offered you the opportunity to choose something from our Giessbach Shop, which is located at the front office. I will personally address these matters with the relevant teams to ensure improvement regarding room changing wishes, guest seating wishes etc.. Your feedback is valuable, and we'll use it to enhance our services. If you reconsider, we'd love the opportunity to provide you with a better experience in the future. Warm regards Grandhotel Giessbach

A very pleasant stay for our anniversary in stylish atmosphere.
The rooms, salon, dining room and very well-kept interior design allow the cultured guest to return to 120 years ago.
The friendly staff rounded off the visit.

Absolutely fabulous! Every part of the property was picture-perfect - like being transported back in time. It was a surprise booking for the family who watched the famous Korean series and it didn’t disappoint. Our rooms had a balcony that faced the Giessbach falls and another room also had the view of the beautiful lake. A super talented pianist provided great music at night and even at breakfast! Fresh selection of local produce was thoroughly enjoyed at the buffet breakfast. Check-in and check-out was a breeze. And the staff was very friendly.

We stayed two nights in a waterfall room and couldn’t have been more happy with our stay. The grounds are unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We spent our first day hiking around the waterfall trails and taking in the stunning lake view. We wanted to go out exploring our second day so it was nice having the hotel shuttle that took us to and from the train station. We ate dinner at the hotel, which was ok. The 4-course meal had some good options, but it was a bit over priced for what it was. Still a good experience though. We were very impressed with the breakfast. The hotel itself is like stepping back in time but everything is well maintained. Some older hotels have bathrooms that leave something to be desired but Giessbach has updated bathrooms with great water pressure. We plan on coming back in our next trip to Switzerland!

We booked one night in a superior double room with a view of Lake Brienz, including breakfast and a 4-course dinner. The room is great with a view of Lake Brienz.
The room's furnishings reflect the period around 1900. The 4-course dinner served in the park restaurant "Les Cascades" was great. The extensive breakfast leaves nothing to be desired. The price for the overnight stay seems high at first glance, but is completely reasonable for what is on offer.
The staff were very friendly and attentive. That's not always the case in Switzerland. In the Bernese Oberland or Valais in particular, guests are sometimes only tolerated because they generate income!

We have only had the very best experiences, whether it be on arrival, check-in, support during the stay or on departure. Everything worked perfectly. Thanks to Direct Booking we got the "Giessbach Nostalgie Pass" with which we took a beautiful steamboat trip on Lake Brienz twice. Unfortunately, the Rothorn Bahn is closed due to the storm, otherwise that would have been the case.

The rooms are decorated in Belle Epoque style, with beautiful views (we had a room overlooking Lake Brienz). Since it had only gotten cold 1-2 days before our visit, the room was a bit cool. However, we were able to reach an acceptable temperature with the existing radiators. The bathroom is pleasantly large and has its own underfloor heating ;-) great!

The bar with the waterfall behind it - a dream. The same applies to the dining room, whether it is at breakfast or dinner. Dinner was at the highest level, we loved it.

Truly a grand hotel!

The hotel is at a secluded spot in the forest. You would need to drive to the next villages, which is about 15mins by car.

Hi there, guests in the hotel can park on site free of charge, the guest carpark is alongside the hotel, visitors to the hotel must park at the car park inside the main entrance to the site and there is an hourly charge in this area. This capark is a 4 minute walk from the hotel entrance and is uphill from the hotel and is a reasonably steep climb.

I do not think lunch is four course, like I know dinner is. There are burgers and lots of great things on the menu for lunch. But do not count on any of the food, (except maybe the salads), being very good. It’s a wonderful place to eat because of the location only, Except for the breakfast buffet, which is absolutely wonderful!
