My husband has come to the Sun-n-Fun air show for 20 years, but this time I came along so it was my first time in Tampa. I love the Marriott, the location, staff and rooms. However, the breakfast is across the street at the JW Marriott and it does make you wonder why Marriott approved 2 hotels beside each other. Either way, this hotel is nicely located and I sat outside along the water and read my book one afternoon. A lovely breeze was wafting along the water and the sea gulls were shrieking overhead. All very nice.

I have stayed in many five and four-star hotels. This is the worst experience ever in a four-star hotel. Their front desk service is awful. Plan to spend at least an hour if you need an additional key as my key stopped working. We waited in line for an hour to check-in where we arrived. If you request room service, you will not get it unless you call the front desk and complain multiple times. If you have very, very noisy neighbors next to, you with more than 12 people in the room, they will tell you that they will do something about it but they won't. The internet was down one of the days we were here. The pool bar closes at 6 pm and the hotel bar closes at 10 pm. If you go order a drink for your room at 9:50 pm, they won't serve you, even though the bar closes at 10 pm and they just served the person next to you at the bar 30 seconds ago. This is the first time I have ever written a negative review. I would give them negative stars if I could. Also, there are no dressers or drawers to put your clothing in the room. Find another place, don't stay here.

Dear Cessna154, Thank you for your stay at our hotel and for providing us with your valuable feedback. We sincerely apologize that you experienced numerous difficulties during your stay with us and if the hospitality extended by our front desk team was anything short of exceptional. This is not the level of service we generally provide and it certainly does not meet our standards. We have shared your comments with our entire staff, and we will take the appropriate action to prevent these issues from happening again. We hope that we will have another occasion to meet your expectations and to welcome you back in the future. Best Regards, L.T. Thomas

A wonderful experience! The hotel is very clean. We had a water view room with balcony and the views were great. The hotel is walking distance to several great restaurants in the area as well. We didn’t get to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant but when we passed by, it looked very trendy and welcoming.

Our realtor suggested we stay at the Marriott water Street while in Tampa looking for real estate for four nights. Though the hotel rooms are comfortable, this hotel is jam packed with every kind of tourist imaginable. There are comings and going‘s in hordes of wedding parties, spring breakers, families, tourists, and Tampa lightning fans. All friendly and wonderful people however we were not prepared for the overcrowded conditions, lines and wait time that come with a hotel this size. Also we did run into some groups of anti-maskers. I know it’s a difficult situation for the hotel. Felt bad for the kids they had in tow that were forced to anti-mask along with their radicalized parents. But for the most part the guests did comply with the hotel’s mask requirements. The hotel FOH staff, the valet staff, and the bell staff, are completely aware there is a serious issue with valet wait times and are entirely unapologetic. No matter who we raised the issue with - they had a zero empathy only complete INDIFFERENCE attitude. We generously tipped the valet at pick up and drop off twice daily. We were exceedingly courteous to all the valet staff. Despite every effort and even pre-arranging for our car to be ready at certain times, the wait times STILL took between 20 to 36 minutes past schedule. Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. I did see an flashy athlete and his girlfriend hand a valet $20 tip for his car and viola - it appeared 18 mins before ours even though he came out 15 mins AFTER us. Is that why the wait times are so long? Bigger tips get you pushed to the front of the line? What’s more unacceptable is that the hotel just doesn’t care that this is the reality. We raised our frustrations numerous times and the rebuttal was literally SILENCE- from every department. They don’t even acknowledge what you were saying - it’s utterly bizarre hospitality behavior. They offer no solution or apology - it is just blatant indifference. If you are bringing your car to this location please consider a few other things. The area is heavy with construction and the main roads are closed and have dicey detours. The area is also flooded with thousands of sports fans for hockey games and other sports arena events that are on the same block as the hotel. It’s absolute pandemonium when there is a Sporting event. While we were here for four nights there were two days of sporting event madness. Droves of pedestrians on top of chaotic closed streets and construction detours make for a dicey drive to get in and out of the area. We tried Ubering during our stay and our Uber driver also got lost and drove in circles until he finally let us out in front of Harpoon Harry’s because he could not himself navigate the area with the detours because of the Game - he was totally lost and he was life long Tampa resident! Trying to get a hold of the front desk staff is enormously challenging. They often don’t know the answers to your questions, and they’re not going to offer to transfer you to concierge. Insist on it. Concierge has a little bit more information but not much more than the front desk. Most of the front desk answers are “I’m not sure” concerning local area questions etc. Rooms are clean, though at checkin to our room I did clean up about 20-30 thick, long black hairs on the bathroom floor and in the shower (stuck to the shampoo and shower gel). Other than that, everything was very comfortable and felt very clean. Rooms are quiet, did not hear our neighbors just the loud mouths in the hallway that have no respect for other travelers. I could tell you that I could never stay here again based on the over crowding and a difference of staff. If you plan on walking only this may be an acceptable spot for you.

We chose the Marriott Tampa Water St. location based on the excellent reviews amenities, and 5 star ratings- how wrong we were. We ended up being accosted by hotel security and NOONE even apologized for terrorizing my children, waking them up and bringing them to tears. They were scared to stay in the room and the hotel – and then the hotel even though they admitted they made a mistake – still justified their actions. This was the single worst hotel experience we’ve ever had – and as Marriott owners – this location does not deserve to carry the brand name. They were rude, racist, disorganized, and then blamed the customer for their mistake. After security wrongly banging on our door, waking and terrorizing our kids – us calling 911 twice because no one could verify anything and we thought we were going to be robbed – the only accommodation they finally offered was a ‘bottle of water’ to try to relax and quiet my now crying and scared children in our room. And then still tried to say WE did something wrong – or looked like we could have come from a bar (carrying an asleep 7 year old to our room). Unexceptable is the understatement of the year. I urge anyone who thinks that this location will be a relaxing or great experience to pick ANYWHERE else to stay! The real story is that they hotel was overwhelmed with spring breakers. Called in wrong information. Had an incompetent front desk employee who didn’t know what was going on – and then each level of management tried to cover up what went wrong and blame it on us. When they saw that my husband was black – they then said ‘well – keep it down, and you look like you came from a bar”. We carried a sleeping child into our room and put him to bed! And then were accosted!! We were racially targeted, terrorized, and treated like we shouldn’t have even been there. At a 5 star hotel their job is to ‘delight’ us, our children should have had a great time – instead they terrorized them and they were scared to go back to sleep in the room! Worst experience ever! I hope that the hotel puts in place training so that no traveler ever has to experience what we did - or have their kids scared to stay at a hotel. I hope the Marriott seriously considers pulling their brand from this location. Here is the detailed story: Here’s what happened -- We planned a trip stayed at the Marriott Tampa Water location on March 20th for the start of our trip to Florida to celebrate our 7 year old’s birthday, turning 8, and to visit friends in Tampa before going to Orlando. We wanted a location with excellent service, comfortable rooms, great views & location, and more family friendly instead of a loud rowdy location. First upon check in – there were several loud drunk spring break types yelling and cursing as we tried to come in with our kids. As well the hotel did not follow current safety procedures and I was shocked by the amount of people in the lobby and elevators who were not required to where masks. At no time did the hotel address this. This was a hint of the horrible evening that was about to occur. After a full day travelling & hours of traffic – everyone was tired so we decided to go to our friends’ house to order pizza for the kids instead of trying to find a restaurant – everyone relaxed and ended up falling asleep. We returned to our room around 12:30am – 1am, carrying our little one who was still asleep in our arms up to the room. No more than 5 minutes after returning to the room and tucking the kids into bed – someone pounded on our door. “Security - we have a complaint and need you to come out here”. We responded saying that there must have been a mistake – we literally just got back to the room, and there was no way – putting two sleepy kids into a bed was cause for any complaints. These two men proceded to pound on the door and insist that we come out. At this point – the behavior seemed very fishy and based on recent news stories. The hotel also had several rowdy spring break types staying at the hotel. Multiple people yelling and cursing in front of our kids when we arrived – clearly after drinking. And several people did not adhere to the safety protocols – I was shocked that the hotel did not address the amount of people without masks in the lobbies and elevators. We called the hotel front desk to ask what was going on – and asked if the men were in fact with hotel security. The front desk replied that they didn’t know what was going on and couldn’t verify who they were. The two men proceded to pound on the door and escalated when we said we were calling the front desk. We then said they needed to leave or we were calling the police. Or if they were with the hotel that they needed to call the front desk and figure it out. They wouldn’t leave and one man actually stepped out of the view of the peep hole – like he was waiting for us to come out. We called 911 and said there were two men who were claiming to be hotel security banging on our door asking us to come out – and the hotel didn’t know who they were. We then called the front desk again – this time they said – sorry they are at the wrong room, I don’t know exactly who they are – but they shouldn’t be there, and should be down the hall. We told the men this through the door – and they continued to bang on the door and demand that we come out. At this point the kids are now awake – and crying “mommy, I’m scared .. what’s going on?” We told the front desk that IF these people were with the hotel that they needed to come up. And they needed to send a manager up to deal with the situation. The front desk said they were sending up “Jonathon” – at this point we didn’t know if we were in a robbery attempt or a gross mistake by the hotel – but we did know that the men continued to escalate and try to get us to come out of the room, no manager had come up, and no one seemed to be able to tell us what was going on or who these men were. We called 911 a second time – now really being terrified that we were living out some type of scam to rob us or kidnap the kids!! After 45 minutes to an hour of them banging on the door - finally, a third person came up = and said his name was “Josh” not “Jonathon” …. Who also wanted us to open the door. Since the information from the front desk was still not correct, we didn’t answer the door – it finally seemed that all three men then had a conversation for 20 minutes before finally leaving. My husband then finally came out of the door and went to the front desk to complain and discuss what in the world was going on. Instead of the hotel finally handling the situation – he was told that he looked like he had come from a bar. Now first of all – we came in carrying a sleeping child. Second of all – we refused to answer the door the entire time because we thought that the people outside were fake and trying to rob or accost us. After an 30 minute discuss he came back upstairs. I was so mad at this point – and had finally gotten my kids to settle down and stop crying I went down to talk to them. First I explained that we had sleeping children and had JUST come into the room – they said that when a complaint comes in – it instantly is dispatched and within 2 minutes security shows up at a door and through the system our room had been identified as the room with a problem. They also said well – sorry for any misunderstanding it does appear they should have been somewhere else – but there needs to be an investigation, and the story is not that straight forward …. I could NOT believe what I was hearing. After basically being harassed by the hotel – WE were now somehow being blamed for their mistake?? My children were crying in the room – and they were blaming us?? Finally the manager asked if I wanted a free bottle of water to take back up to the room to try to help calm my children down. I get that the hotel was still running on a skeleton crew and had a large influx in the number of people staying and were not equipped to deal with some of the louder and younger spring break travellers. But what is inexcusable is that when they saw that we were a black and multi-racial family we were treated like we didn’t belong and were to be blamed and deserved rude and unacceptable treatment. What’s also unacceptable is that no one actually took responsibility or tried to rectify the bad decisions or service problem they created – and instead justified their actions and tried to figure our a way to make ‘us’ responsible. This was the worst service experience I’ve ever had. The reason that brands like Starbucks are loved – is that when something goes wrong – no matter what they create an opportunity to make a great experience for the customer. Everyone makes mistakes—but the fact that NOONE did anything but try to make us feel worse about their mistake made an opportunity a reason to permanently loose a loyal customer. This is why I will NEVER stay there again – and I urge the Marriott to drop their brand from this location, require diversity and service training for all employees. I hope that someone learns from this experience and that NO other customer ever has to be treated the way we were. No one should experience treatment like this – especially not a high end service establishment that they are paying for!!
