Detailed Reviews
Conveniently located right off the beach. My #1 requirement for looking for a room was that it face the ocean. This place did not disappoint. It was like a hotel room, but your outdoor entrance is in the back facing the parking lot, so every rooms balcony faces the ocean. Our room had 2 queen beds that were very comfortable. The room was clean and the air conditioning worked great. I do wish there had been a screen door to leave open on the balcony so I could listen to the ocean at night if I had wanted to. Because of Covid, the cleaning ladies do not enter your room unless you want them to. We chose to not have them come in. If you have dirty towels, etc. they provide a garbage bag for you to put them in, and you leave them outside your door. When you return, you have a bag with fresh, clean towels and any other items you needed replaced. It worked out great for us. The ladies were all very nice and friendly.
We were on the 2nd floor and had good view of the ocean waves. If you want to be able to see the actual beach, you would need to be on the 3rd floor to be able to see over the dunes. .
As far as the amenities, there was a small coffee pot, microwave, tv, and 2 small frig's. They weren't very big and one was hidden away inside the tv cabinet. If you don't plan on getting much food and only want to microwave left over's from eating out and such, you'll be fine.
Over all our stay was very good and I would recommend this place.

Yes, the place is old and tired, but the Oceanview Lodge appears to be one of the best values in Florida. I don’t know anywhere else at which one get such a spectacular view of the Atlantic for this price. Just look out the sliding doors in your room (any room; all rooms have an ocean view, as the name of the place indicates) and there it is: beautiful Velano Beach and the sound of the waves to send you gently off to sleep or to enjoy at any time of the day.
Our room was spacious and clean, with plenty of room for the two of us and adequate room for three or, in a stretch, four should you have the kids with you. The sink is located outside the bathroom so that one of us could shave or apply make-up while the other showered or did necessary business. There is a coffeemaker, a microwave, and a larger dorm style refrigerator in the room, so it was easy to prepare breakfast (Contrary to some advertising you might see to the contrary, the Oceanview Lodge does not provide free breakfast anymore.), or even dinner, in the room. The staff, especially the cleaning staff, was helpful and beyond friendly. The pool was more of an oversized bathtub, but I understand that guests could use the larger pool at the facility’s sister facility, The Magic Motel, right across the street, but who needs a pool when you are steps from Velano Beach?
There is a Publix within easy walking distance of the place; there is an overpriced pizza place and what looks like a good Chinese place adjoining the Publix and a pretty good, slightly more upscale restaurant just a slightly longer walk away. Other than that, though, there isn’t much going on in Velano Beach itself; you have to drive, or take a very long walk through some somewhat sketchy areas, to get to most of the restaurants and other attractions in the greater St. Augustine area. One wonders why the Velano Beach area is not more developed, but the answer may be at hand; if you are looking for a quiet place to visit, go soon because there are at least two large, “name brand” hotels going up in Velano Beach. Neither, by the way, will have the views provided by the Oceanview Lodge.
I realize that there are many people who would not stay at a hotel as old and in need of updating as this place, but, for those with an open mind, the Oceanview Lodge provides a spectacular view, and natural soundtrack, of the Atlantic and a very short walk to the beach at an unbelievable price.
We prefer the west coast of Florida to the east coast; I am an ardent swimmer and, while the waves and chop of the Atlantic can be fun, it is much easier, and safer, to swim distances and for long periods of time in the Gulf. So we probably won’t be back to Velano Beach or, having already seen the historic sites on this trip, St. Augustine. However, if we are ever in the area, we would stay at the Oceanview Lodge again. If we could stay at the Hampton Inn next door for a price close to that of the Oceanview (a highly doubtful proposition), we would probably stay there, though.

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights last week. When we booked they only had rooms left on the 1st floor. I assumed we wouldn’t have a good view of the ocean however I was pleasantly surprised that even the 1st floor is raised up. So we had a beautiful view of the ocean and only had to go up and down 1 flight of stairs to get to our room. Parking was easy. We did have to check in at neighboring hotel but it was easy and the desk staff was very friendly. The king size bed was comfortable and the ac worked great. It appeared to be an older hotel but the room was clean and nicely decorated. We loved that it was only about a 5 minute drive to the Old jail where we were able to catch the trolley. The only thing we may have wanted different was a larger shower. We joked while we were there that it was a camp shower due to its small size. We would definitely stay here again. The small shower was worth the great view, the less than 5 minute easy walk to the beach, and proximity to the city. Great place to stay.

This is an independent owned hotel. They are short staffed and the owners seem like good hard working people but we had many issues.
First you have to walk across the street to their other motel to check in. There is no breakfast. No room cleaning unless you specifically find one of the house keepers and ask. You take your towels and place them in a trash bag outside your door. The elevator was broken when we were there so you have to climb the stairs with your stuff.
We arrived a little early got our key card and it wouldn’t work. So the lady at the front desk told me to come back and that the housekeeping would let my family in.
I walked across the street only to have her tell me there’s nothing they could do. So I walked back across the street to find my family stuck outside the room.
We finally got in the room but couldn’t really leave with no way to get back in. Around 5-6 that evening the owner showed up and began trying to get us in our room. He was able to give us a working key card finally. This card only worked until noon the next day which we didn’t know when we arrived back at our room at around 9:30. At which time we had to go back across the street and get a new card. This was a wide spread issue while we were there.
The pool is closer to a bath tub than a pool as well.
There’s no sink in the bathroom.
Terrible cell service which is no fun when you’re stuck outside your room lol.
But all in all we had a good time and we’re right across from the beach.
I feel bad for the owner I think he’s really trying it’s just when your price is very similar to hotels with much higher standards it’s hard to give a positive review.

We love the Oceanview Lodge and have taken to visiting every few months. The rooms overlook the beach (are directly on the beach, with just a small parking lot and dunes between balcony and beach). The rooms have microwaves and refrigerators and there is a Publix a block away, so picnicking or snacking in the room is one of our favorites. And then, of course, there are multiple excellent restaurants in Vilano and St. Augustine. The people who work at the Oceanview Lodge are warm, friendly and helpful. Zoe, who manages the front desk, is great, as have been others covering the desk when I've called. The cleaning staff are also friendly and pleasant. All in all, it's a great place to stay and Vilano is a great place to visit.

Great location right next to the beach. The room was a good size and had a nice balcony.
The office was closed and the continental breakfast that was included in my reservation was discontinued without any accommodation. Check in was at the hotel next door and I was only provided with one key which the receptionist told me, "If you loose it then we will need to contact the owners who are not on site, so try not to loose it!" We did not receive any room service (I'm assuming due to the key issue).

The balcony opens up over looking the ocean from any level. They treat you like family and the price is right. Waking up and falling asleep a stones throw from the ocean is well worth it. I recommend the third floor for anyone looking for a great rate and an out of this world view.

Hard to beat sitting on the 3rd floor balcony listening to the surf and having your morning coffee watching the sunrise. Not to mention your are a stones throw from the beach and 1 block from a Public's as well as several restaurants. We really enjoyed being removed from all the chaos in St A and could ride our bikes downtown in about 20 minutes. All this at a relatively(by St Augustine standards) good price, the downside is it is an older hotel with a few tired spots. Seems like most of the updates have been on the exterior but the good new is our room was clean though dated. The hotels policy was to not service the rooms during our stay but we were only 4 nights so it was fine. Places like this will always get mixed review depending on how much you can ignore and how important location is, for us it was fine and we would return.

You'll never get a better location for the price if you want beach front! Every room faces the beach but if you really want a view I recommend getting the 2nd or 3rd floor. Don't worry there's an elevator & balconies! Our double room was showing its age & some of the furniture is worn from use but overall it was very clean. The beds were comfortable and A/C worked perfectly! One complaint-the shower curtain had mold along the bottom which is an easy & cheap fix so it must have been overlooked as I've seen it mentioned here before. It's the perfect location for a trip to St. A. Right on the beach but a short drive to the historic district or restaurants & far enough away from all the noise! It's one of the few privately owned small hotels in this area that is being surrounded by huge brand new, brand name chain hotels. It has the best location for the price in this area. We didn't try the breakfast but did use the fridge. We will definitely stay here again (if the big names don't buy them out & tear them down).

The hotel itself is decent. It has a large parking lot, so parking isn't an issue. Elevators are present for all floors for easy access, including the check in counter which is on the 2nd floor. Check in was quick and had helpful information of the easiest and best ways to get around if you didn't want to drive to St. Augustine.
Room was clean, and was a decent size and has a balcony overlooking the ocean. Just note there is actually a public parking lot right between the hotel and the beach so you will hear car traffic and see cars from your balcony. We stayed on the lowest floor and could still see the ocean, just not the beach due to the dunes which was fine. Some of the pickup trucks can be very noisy though and that was the only annoying thing about that parking lot. In warmer months, it'll be a lot busier, and you will have to cross traffic to the beach.
Bathroom was fine and the entry way for at least our room had a separate sink and a microwave and a fridge.
Beds were fine, and you can hear the ocean if you leave the doors open at night, though you will also hear the trucks if they are present like they were each night we were there late at night and in the morning. So I wouldn't suggest sleeping with the door open if you want to sleep.
Uber is about $10 one way to St. Augustine's old town so that was the cheapest method and quickest, though there is a private bus that shows up as well that people can use, though pricer. Walking distance to Publix, but not a lot of food options in walking distance though.
The price wasn't the cheapest, but for the how Florida's beach prices have sky rocketed, it's still a better deal than a lot of places, especially since Vilano Beach is mainly just homes and condos and rental properties with only a very few hotels, especially the beach...
