Restored Victorian Home (Ca. 1890) furnished with beautiful antiques, located on beautiful grounds in Monticello, Florida. 25 miles from Tallahassee, FSU and FAMU and 21 miles from Thomasville. Near Wacissa Springs, Wakulla Springs. Biking, antiquing, shopping. Monticello is located in Jefferson County, the heart of “the Olde Florida”, one of rolling hills and stately, moss-draped oaks. Situated mid-way between Jacksonville and Pensacola, it is the only county that extends from Georgia on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south. Monticello, with a population of 2,600 residents, is Jefferson Count’s seat of government. Located just 23 miles from Tallahassee, the state capital, Monticello is the perfect example of a walkable community. The town offers stately 19th century homes, bed and breakfast inns, antique shops, an Opera House (circa 1890), an art gallery, easy access to government offices, and several restaurants situated around a unique “roundabout”, showcasing the Jefferson County Courthouse (circa 1909) in the town center. Many of these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These structured represent some of the best architectural styles of the 1800’s, and most are still in use today. Our town is considered “the Most Haunted Small Town in America” complete with ghost tours, and documented photo siting’s.

My husband Bill and I had a simply wonderful Christmas holiday at the cottage that was part of the Avera-Clarke Bed and Breakfast in Monticello, FL. The cottage was cozy, charming, decorated for Christmas and just loved all the details....especially the clawfoot bathtub.....I bought some awesome scented bath bombs for my baths. Breakfasts were simply delish, very filling and we really enjoyed chatting with Troy and Gretchen the innkeepers. Lovely people. Definitely will be going back their again hopefully in this new year 2020!! The townspeople were very friendly, the grounds beautiful, we had a swing on the huge front porch of our cottage. Thank you Gretchen and Troy for taking such great care of us during our stay with you.

We booked our guest at the Avera-Clarke House for the weekend of my sons wedding, and were lucky enough to also have the rehearsal dinner and wedding day brunch there as well. The weather was beautiful so we had all the festivities outside in their beautiful courtyard and under their pavilion. Brooke and Nick took care of everything, setting up the chairs and tables with the beautiful white pressed table cloths and turning the outside area into a fairytale setting with twinkly lights everywhere! They were on hand for any needs we had throughout the whole weekend, making sure we had everything we needed without hesitation. When things were forgotten, like music and setting a fire for the chill in the air, they took care of it all! They turned a stressful occasion into one of happy memories, making everything as easy as possible for us so we could enjoy the moment with our family and friends. The whole weekend was flawless. Brooke was hands on with helping plan everything from the time we booked her house for the wedding weekend, until the time we hugged goodbye the day after. I can't thank you enough for helping make sure we made great memories for our family and friends. The ease of having everything and everyone self contained in one area was the best choice I could of made and having it at your home with you and Nick to take care of everything, I will be forever grateful to you both.

We loved the Avera-Clarke House! We started with our children and felt very welcome! The rooms were charming, luxurious and spotless! Breakfast was fabulous, the grounds were beautiful and relaxing and our hostess, Gretchen, was so friendly and an excellent tour guide! You must try the Avera-Clarke House!

Great little place with an amazing courtyard and the owners are fabulous! Stayed two nights for a friends wedding/ reception. Area is gorgeous and the owners are so nice and helpful!
Breakfast was amazing and a bit fancier than we are used to! Great area to walk and explore as well. We were there when all of US 290 was having its annual yard sales so that was cool!
Room was cozy and we were the only couple there so we were able to keep the temp down which was awesome for me!! One tiny issue with the TV but it was corrected very quickly, which made my date happy lol.
Great stay!!

Troy and Gretchen were terrific hosts. We learned about their careers and travels, where Gretchen collected many of the whimsical decorative arts and antiques which adorn this late-Victorian mansion. My wife won this at a charity golf tournament, and we will definitely recommend this B&B to friends and relatives.

I would describe the decor as "whimsical eclectic". There are some fine antiques, including dining room furniture that apparently was original to the house. Gretchen has traveled the world and went on a shopping spree in each country visited. (Troy is obviously a supportive husband!)

The rooms were large and comfortable. Our room had a shared "Jack and Jill" bath, which normally would have been a detriment. However, since the "Jill" bedroom was not occupied on our particular stay, we enjoyed a private bath. The rooms are "themed". Ours was labeled the "Queen Anne Room", and, my wife says she felt like Queen Anne for our 18 hour stay.

The breakfast was wonderful: a tasty fruit-slush punch, fresh fruit served over poached pear, link sausages, fresh asparagus, and home-made sausage, mushroom and spinach quiche.

We're from Tallahassee, which is 26 miles west of Monticello, a small, charming town located in "the other Florida", far from the usual tourist destinations. We made our stay into an overnight "date", including a show at the 1890 Monticello Opera House.

The entire experience has created a welcome memory.

I came across The Avera Clarke House on an internet search after finding out a place in nearby Thomasville was already booked. Troy and Gretchen are wonderful hosts and were so informative about the area and it's history. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good too! We enjoyed our time there so much we are already planning our next trip and will bring friends with us.

Troy and Gretchen are like family you didn't know you had! I am normally more of a large luxury hotel person but when staying in small towns, like to do B&B's. We were lucky to get 2 nights at this charming house the weekend of FSU graduation. It was less than 30 minutes to get to/from Tallahassee but a world apart.

I felt more like a guest in a friend's (very nice) home, than a paying customer. The morning breakfast was lovely both days and we could come and go as if we lived in the house. Plus, we got to learn so much about the town because Gretchen works to preserve the old buildings which is something I think is important.

We were in the garden room (upstairs first left door) which had an extremely comfortable bed and tons of feather pillows (my favorite). No tub, just a shower but surrounded by a wrap around outside porch which if we had had more time, we would have loved to sit on. The grounds are really pretty and the house is decorated lovely.

And the price was really great!

Truly a nice weekend!

We love staying here every year for the annual Monticello Watermelon Festival! Gretchen and Troy are the most charming hosts! The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, so comfortable and clean. The house is a historic landmark and within walking distance to downtown, shopping and dining. The grounds are beautiful with a huge backyard and hammock and grill for outdoor dining and plenty of room for my kids to play and run. Gretchen makes tasty and hearty home made breakfasts with hot coffee and local produce. The Avera-Clarke House is kid friendly and rivals Disney for service and hospitality! :)
