My second time here I was greeted by the staff by my first name before I even got in the door!! loved the customer service and the hospitality! I booked the same room and it had that "second home" feeling that is always nice. The people are friendly, the travelers are exciting and the rooms are clean! This is my favorite hostel in auckland! Only a 10 minute cab ride to k Road if you are interested in that kind of thing.

If you are looking to stay out if the city but close enough to it on a budget, this is for you! The stairs at the entrance might be a bit rough for those with heavy bags, but you'll survive or more than likely another guest will help you if they see you! The receptionist was very polite and down to earth. Very relaxed and very helpful! I waited in the lounge while my room was prepared...it was like hanging in a dorm lounge but enough space to have your privacy. The wifi prices here are CHEAP in comparison to hotel prices!
The room was clean and relaxing.
Highly recommended!

Stayed for 7 nights in this hostel as it was our first stop in NZ and we needed some time to get our IRD number and buy a car. Returned for 2 nights after a short 10 days trip to Northland.
Most of the rooms we stayed in previously (in Asia) has its own ensuite bathroom and thus I was a bit apprehensive about the shared bathrooms. My worries were unfounded as the bathrooms were very clean and the showers were really hot (great for this weather when it averages at about 15 degrees during the day). After chatting with Vinnie (one of the managers), I realised that this is because the bathrooms are cleaned 3 times a day! This is quite a busy hostel and you may have to queue occasionally (only had to queue twice during my 7+2 nights stay), but when it happens, the hostel manager will come round (Kate in this case), and allow you to use the staff toilet as well.
The double room is basic but sufficient. We had 2 side tables, 2 side lamps, a queen sized bed, heater and room for 2 huge backpacks (we are both on a working holiday)! Very clean and comfortable. Granted that the rooms are separated by partitions, and thus, you will be able to hear your neighbours but think that is quite common in hostels anyway. The second time we stayed in the hostel, we got a double room where the heater shuts itself down every 3 hours. This is my only complain about this place as I woke up freezing in the morning.
We stayed in the private room and thus do not need lockers, however, we noted that lockers for the dorm is by the kitchen and require your own padlock so remember to bring your own!
The smoking area is at the patio outside the house, but guests are not allowed to sit there after 10pm. This is because it is really close to the neighbour, and they will call the hostel to complain. So for people who are looking for a party and drinking hostel, maybe look somewhere else.
Kitchen is huge and lots of space for preparation of food and storing of food. We cooked everyday and had no problems although you may have to have your meals a bit later or earlier than usual to beat the crowd.
During the 7 days that we were there, we had a good chat with both Vinnie and Kate (2 of the hostel managers). Both are really friendly and helpful.
Location wise, it is about 10 mins walk to Countdown (a huge supermarket chain). There are also cafes, restaurants, pubs, banks, post office within 15 minutes walk either on Dominion Road or Mt Eden Road. However, if you want to get to town, you will have to take a bus and the bus stop is about 10 minutes walk as well.
Overall, great experience and will definitely stay there again if we go back to Auckland again.

Pentlands is in a good location with easy access to bus routes & local amenities, however the accommodation manager, falls far short of what one would reasonably expect from someone in his position. Verbal abuse of a guest, as a result of a using a bathroom which had a questionable out of order sign, was not what I expected & quite alarming. The guest in question felt so threatened by the managers outburst that they along with other members of there party felt compelled to leave.
Reasonable accommodation, shame about the management

First of all I don't know why this is called a Bed and Breakfast because they certainly don't do breakfast here. :/
This is a lovely backpackers located near Mt. Eden. Location wise it's very close to the train station and bus stop with very cheap fares for getting into the city. If you like walking it's also not too far to just walk to the city center. A large super market is also about a 5 minute walk down the road. The backpackers is clean for the most part and has some of the best bathroom facilities I have seen in a hostel. The noise level at night is also pretty good. The only noise that will disturb you is that of any fellow guests coming and going in the middle of the night. Pretty good considering how close you are to Auckland central. This is probably one of the best places to stay in Auckland.
However it's run sooooo poorly! I have worked in a NZ hostel for 4 months and I could have single handedly run this hostel better than the staff. They are constantly overbooking rooms and then will charge you $20 per person per night to sleep in your van outside. I have personally been screwed around with them and had to pay $30 for a room that I did not want while working for "free" accommodation there. It's amazing how many guests have been sitting and complaining about the management of the place. Even if your room hasn't been overbooked when you check in, just be prepared for the possibility of having to move rooms for random reasons. I knew a couple that were separated and when they slept in the same bed together the staff told them they couldn't do that, but they also weren't going to be put in the same room. It wasn't until they overbooked the guy's bed that they turned around and told him he had to share a bed with his girlfriend in her room so they could use his space. The next day when he asked for his bed back (That he paid for!) they had forgotten about him and booked his bed again! I won't go into everything that went on, but it was stuff like that happening daily.
Reception itself seems to be closed more often then open... I don't know what is up with that! The staff also don't really treat their cleaners very well and don't make the effort to remember their names. I couldn't help but feel like I was a burden to the staff whenever I had a question to ask! As a quick note the locks could all use changing or oiling as they're such a pain to open to get to your room!
It's a great place to stay for a night maybe two at most, but if you're looking to stay longer you'll start to dig under the surface and discover these annoying faults. Hopefully if you stay here you will be lucky and stay in the same bed for the duration of your stay!

Good quiet location just 400m to supermarkets and 2 main roads with shops and restaurants. Outerlink bus at the end of the road and other buses to city 2 blocks away. Stayed in a 4 bed dorm in probably the tiniest room in the hostel. Not enough space for bags etc and little storage. The place was cleaned regularly to the point where the only toilets/showers were closed for 3 hrs everyday (1.5hrs in the am and the same in the pm) while the wofers insisted they were cleaning all of them at the same time and guys were walking outside to pee in the bushes. Nice kitchen that gets very crowded after 6pm, not enough fridge or locker space for food. The fridges seemed to stop working regularly and things would go off or get stolen during the night. Constant spoilage didn't appear to be a concern of the manager who just shrugged.
The place is supposed to be demolished in afew weeks so probably not the best choice if you aren't able to afford to keep replacing food, have a weak bladder or midday appointment, and need a place to stay beyond June.

Response from Friends-Pentlands, Manager at Pentlands Backpackers Hostel
Responded 10 Jun 2014
It is sad that the comments written here are incorrect. Firstly the hostel in not going to be closed in june or 60 days. The fridegs are brand new. There is security cameras in the ktichen and around the hostel so guests are vey aware that they will be caught if any food is stolen. Happy travelling.

Unfortunately our stay at this hostel was one of the worst on the trip. Overall, the hostel is nice - it's in a nice area (peaceful neighbourhood) and has good facilities: a decent kitchen, clean showers and toilets, nice rooms, amazing living area, etc. Based on the hostel itself, I would recommend it.
However, I have read a number of terrible reviews about Vinnie and though I didn't have any nasty encounters, I would still recommend to steer clear. Why would you support someone who treats guests in such a way? The vibe I got in the hostel was very unwelcoming and I often felt uncomfortable here. Service was sub par and staff could have been better. Our room was very close to the front patio where people held loud conversations until 4 in the morning. I would have been fine with this (im not one to rain on someones parade) but the staff were in earshot of these people late at night and didn't bother to ask them to move in consideration of other guests. I guess I was more annoyed by the staff not caring then the people having a good time outside our door. The blinds also did nothing to block out the light from the street lamps. As a result, we slept very poorly both nights.
Location is okay but other hostels are much better (several downtown). Buses run frequently and there are shops, restaurants, pubs, and a grocery store close by (countdown). Good location if you want a calm area, bad if you want to be where the action is.
Overall, this isn't a horrible place by any means but there are better places you can stay and I would recommend doing so. Just consider yourself warned...

I can't judge a place based on the people who were staying there when I passed through. I was there for 1 week, and the place was fine. Didn't get a good 1st impression from Vinnie (one of the managers?). Had a single private room which was quite small. Showers/toilets & kitchen area were clean & fine. Located outside of the CBD in the Mt. Eden neighborhood. A nice walk from Mt. Eden. Near restaurants, cafes & grocery store. Also a 5-10 min. walk to buses that take you to the CBD, Parnell or Newmarket neighborhoods.

pentlands backpacker is a great little hostel, homestyle, quite, clean with great facilities and in a great location. The kitchen is large, the bathrooms are clean and very private, you get your own room with a toilet, shower and sink - no sharing a room with other people while you shower! The only thing is there are not a lot of them, only four or five, and sometimes in busy times you have to que! The lounge is cozy with lots of sofas and a TV connected to a hard drive which is literally FULL of movies and tv shows. you wont be bored on a rainy day! Its location is great, nice if you want something outside of the city but not too far with good transport links to and from. the hostel itself is exceptionally clean, cleanest i've stayed in! and its quiet too. Infact it might be abit too quiet with no drinking allowed after 7pm and your not allowed outside after 10pm! this was fine with me though as i was not looking for a party hostel and it meant i got a good night sleep.
The thing that lets this place down is the management. Vinny (said he was the manager) seemed nice at first however it became clear he was incompetent and horrible person. I whitness him shouting at cleaner on more than one occasion and having arguement in kitchen. He also cannot manage bookings i have heard from many guests how they have been overbooked and have to move rooms. I met a couple who had to move out because the room they booked had 'accidently' been double booked even though they booked it first. Even the lovely american receptionist apaolagised to me about Vinny! Also he kept changing the prices! Everyone was paying different prices for the same room, and the room rates posted on the doors and around the hostel were cheaper than what i was paying. When i asked i was told they were rates not currently available but it did not say this and why post them up?! it was all very confusing. overheard him say to one guest 'if you dont like it you can leave' great service to paying customers!
Overall i would say pentlands is good for a few nights but while Vinny is there dont stay too long! or you will start to see the problems. I would also say don't ignore the reviews that say to ignore the negative reviews! Sometimes negative reviews are the truth!

Response from Friends-Pentlands, Manager at Pentlands Backpackers Hostel
Responded 23 Jun 2014
Pentlands Backpackers Hostel is about having a good time in a place we like to call home away from home. We work very hard to ensure that everyone enjoys their stay at our hostel but sometimes it seems it is impossible to make everyone happy doesn't matter how hard we try. We have more than 10 000 visitors every year and it is great to see that allmost everyone has a great time while staying with us, except for a few. We have had two trainee managers over the last few months and if there were any mistakes with any bookings we try our best to ensure that the guests are happy with any changes. It is therefore really vey sad that you have shown no kindenss or understanding for our managers for every misunderstanding or untrue gossip that you heard. I am not aware of any double bookings being made. If you have made a booking, you get to stay in the same bed for the days you have booked. We always try to leave everyone in the same bed but you may have to be moved to another room if you wanted to EXTEND your stay as that room may have been fully booked by other guests in advance. Me and the cleaner were just having a discussion and it may have been a bit loud but I can understand that you may have misunderstood it as shouting. He is still with us and we are still one big happy team at Pentlands. I invite you to come and see it for yourself. We just had a great BBQ weekend and everyone joined in for some nice get together, some drinks, music and fun. We are looking forward to some more good fun times in the near future. Regarding the prices. We offer one of the best daily rates and winter weekly discounts in Auckland. During this price change there can be some confusion but it is really sad that eveything negative written in this review is misunderstandings and gossips which are totally not true. I am sorry to say I can't find any truth in it. If you have a problem, please come and talk to us we will ensure that you are happy with what you paid. I will write down our rates here for you and if you feel you have been charged too much please come and see us and we will kindly refund you fully with our kind appologies. Our rates: 4 bed or 5 bed dorms winter daily rate at $24 per night. 4 bed or 5 bed dorm winter weekly rate at $135 per week. Double room winter weekly rate at $295 per week for two persons. We take pride in offering one of the best, cheapest prices, cleanest, relaxing and fun hostels in New Zealand. Keep positive, keep smiling and happy backpacking. Kinds regards, Vinny

Stayed at the hostel for a couple of weeks and despite it being in a very good location and having very nice facilities if you spend longer than a couple of nights you might see the crack appear. The staff seem lovely and friendly when you first arrive but their incompetence will soon shine through.
They messed up our booking when we arrived. We had to change rooms a couple of times due to them over booking the hostel. But we weren't the only ones. Speaking to some of the other guests i heard many stories of people having to move rooms. Long term guests being double booked. We knew a couple who were told they weren't allowed to share a bed while being in a dorm room then the hostel double booked one of their beds so asked them to share a bed.
On the first day we were there we witnessed in the middle of the kitchen an argument between one of the receptionists and a cleaner. The cleaner then quit on the spot and stormed off. Also there is meant to be a noise curfew at 10pm but nobody actually seems to be there to enforce it. I could go on about more issues but i haven't got all day.
As i said at the top. Nice place if you're just staying for a night or two (but ring before you arrive make sure they haven't double booked) If you plan to stay in Auckland longer, stay somewhere else.
