Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was concerned reading the mix of reviews however we were very pleased with our stay at Sonder the Beacon.
We've travelled extensively, always research hotels carefully and try to be prepared for how things are going to be. Once we booked, we were able to communicate through the Sonder chat feature, always receiving prompt responses.
We stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment and it was very spacious with a full kitchen and 2 full bathrooms, perfect for our family of 5. We were initially missing kitchen linens and also requested extra garbage bags and these were brought up a short time after messaging through the app.
Some 'issues' mentioned in other reviews were minor. No restaurant on site (looked to be under renovation?) so we grabbed groceries. I guess that could be an issue if staying in a regular room and not an apartment-style room however, there are restaurants/coffee shops literally 2-3 blocks away. Shower wasn't terribly hot..not a big deal. The pool and hottub look a bit rundown but they're clean. I read they are being redone starting in February. The rooftop bar was active 2 out of our 5 nights and being on the 4th floor, there was some noise but we were prepared with earplugs. Our 3 kids never heard a thing.
You can't beat the location. Directly across from Santa Monica beach and a short distance to the Pier and the Promenade. Homeless congregated more in those areas.
Overall, it was a pleasant stay in a quirky, historic hotel.

This feels like being in an Apartment, not a hotel, as no restaurant/bar open.

The bar by the check in was closed for the duration of our visit, which seemed odd, and no plans to open!

Just some toasted sandwiches, cakes and coffee the bare minimum would have been nice in this ground floor bar/restaurant area would fave been nice.

There is an independent bar on the roof top which serves food, but doesn’t open till late in afternoon, has booming music, so loud you can’t speak, and has private parties guests are NOT invited too.

Great location, but overpriced for an ‘apartment’.

By the way you have to go down to the basement laundry area to refresh your towels/loo roll - not a Hotel I’m afraid.

Your feedback is important to us. We’re sorry to hear about your experience. We apologize for not being more clear regarding the style of the building and how we operate. This location does have a bar on the roof, and we understand the noise can be a bit much. Complimentary earplugs and/or a white noise machine are always available to help. If you choose to try us again, we’d love to show you a better stay.

No internet in the suite for our 3 days stay. It is ironical for a hotel where you have to order fresh towels on line. We have been going to this hotel for 10 years when it was the Shangri-La and always had a pleasant stay. Now that Sonder took over it is a disaster, the breakfast room is closed, the roof bar is not always open and you have Zero service. Rooms have not been renovated and it is even more expensive than it was before and you must do your bed and cleaning. No amenities in the bathroom, not even a shower cap. A total disappointment.

Giving this review 2 stars for the location and the view from the room, which was incredible. Otherwise, I would highly suggest avoiding this “hotel”. It is actually a motel - your room door goes to the outside, not an inside hallway that is secure. This was unnerving to me since I was a female traveling alone. I would have felt much safer in a traditional hotel.

There is no maid service! Guests receive 2 shower towels, 2 hand towels, and 2 face cloths. There are no extra towels in basement storage for guests to refresh their towels.

The 2 elevators were broken during the duration of my stay, which unfortunately meant lugging a 50 lb suitcase up and down 3 flights of stairs.

As others have mentioned, it is noisy due to the rooftop bar but also the pool area/ hallway

We were lucky enough to be in the newly refurbished room. Be aware that they "comb" the sand right outside your patio early in the AM. The room has been refurbished with great care and it very nice. The front desk people are very helpful. Parking is perfect - right out the front door

Coffee in the room would be nice as there is no restaurant. Also instructions on how to turn off the fancy night stand light would be helpful

First time staying at a SONDER. Overall, it was good. Location is excellent. Price was right. If you're looking for more of a hotel experience, I would recommend paying the extra $$ to stay at an actual hotel. Staff was nice. Our wi-fi didn't work in our room, and they tried to help us but it still wouldn't work. The Hot Tub was not on. Our bathroom did have a stench as well. They awarded us some compensation for these troubles, but still.

Quite possibly one of the worst stays of my life. Unfortunate as the concept has so much promise - but you can’t sell a room in an old hotel with a ”No parties (not even really quiet ones)” and strict “quiet hours” policy from 10pm while simultaneously having a night club rent out your top floor that booms music all night long, literally shaking the walls of our room. When raising this to Sonder, I was just told that there was a disclaimer about this on their website.

The disclaimer? “Some spaces may encounter noise from the onsite restaurant.”

Completely and absolutely ridiculous. Don’t stay here.

This hotel has some redeeming qualities. The room is very large, the bed was comfortable, and the staff were kind and helpful. The pool is also surprisingly warm which was a treat on some gloomy days. However, there are many drawbacks to this property, and I should have paid closer attention to the reviews before booking. I was staying with my two toddlers under the age of three. On two of the four days, the only elevator was out. You can imagine my horror when I arrived at the broken elevator on the fifth floor pushing a double stroller. Also, there is no way to call the reception desk directly, and I cannot leave two small children alone in the room, so I couldn't get help. There was also no option to have the room cleaned when I was there. I didn't mind paying to have it cleaned, I understand that's part of the deal, but all of the days were blocked off. The key pad on the door also didn't work several times, and there are no physical keys. So again, we had to go down to the lobby to rectify the issue. The night club is very noisy, however, we stayed on the Arizona side of the hotel so I couldn't hear it in the bedroom. All in all, if you want a bare bones hotel and don't care about amenities, this would be fine. If you, like me, need a little extra help getting around with children, then don't stay here.

The hotel room was very nice, very spacious and clean. The Onyx rooftop bar was fun. However the trip was completely soured because the valet returned our rental car covered in chips and scratches, costing us a fortune.

Hi, your honest feedback is important to us. While we're thrilled you could enjoy your space and the rooftop bar, we're sorry there were issues with the valet. A third-party company runs the valet. We'd recommend that you contact your insurance company. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
