Booked this place for a quick overnight prior to entering Avenue of the Giants. There were limited options available in our budget during this busy time of year. This is a very small motel next to the brass rails bar (apparently this place used to be brass rails inn and is now under new mgmt). First impression from outside was a bit rough. The guy at the front desk, Damien, was very friendly and let us check in an hour early. He gave us a great recommendation to see Shelter Cove area (def must go!). Room was fairly updated and pretty clean and the AC worked very well. The smoke detector did not appear to be working (husband is a firefighter so he always checks). We didn’t hear any noise from bar next door and the rest of stay was without incident. Overall, rooms were nicer than expected but surrounding area is not particularly family friendly.

When we first pulled up to the hotel, we were a little bit apprehensive. It is next door to a bar, and there were several homeless people hanging out in the general area. However, we were pleasantly surprised overall. Damian allowed us early check in and had some great suggestions for activities in the area. He was spot on, we had an amazing time at Black sand beach and Cove beach. Our room has been recently updated, and it was clean and cool. Nice bathroom products. The bed was comfortable but for some reason our fitted sheets kept popping off the mattress which kept waking me up. The same thing happened in one of our other family member’s rooms. A small detail, but something they could probably easily fix based on feedback. The noise from the bar outside was not bad, especially when it is drowned out by the air conditioner. All in all, a good value for the area.

This property has probably seen it’s fair share of both good and bad times/ownership. I think current ownership is making a real attempt to update the rooms and amenities. Although initially skeptical when checking in, we were pleasantly surprised by our “updated” room. It needed a little attention to detail, but otherwise was nicely furnished and had all the usual expected amenities. It was clean, and everything worked. Can’t vouch for the other rooms, but ownership does seem to be willing to update the property. It currently is one of the few pet friendly options in the area. As of the date of this review, there is no street sign identifying the property.

Easy check in, the lady was nice and friendly. First room was not made up. Second room was not made up. Third room was fine. (covid troubles finding help in out of the way town in the boondocks) Don't expect an easy TV experience. Wifi was fine. Reasonably clean but needs a deep cleaning, but seems to have been remodeled recently. Upstairs neighbors ran a bowling alley for several hours in the evening (it seemed). Lots to see and do outdoors. Redway has a homeless problem. Weed Smell but it is Humbolt and harvest season. Not much to eat but Pizza or a drive into Garberville.

SCARY! The desk clerk was asleep when we got there @5pm. The room had not been cleaned and there were little sugar ants and hair all over the sink. They did offer another room which looked cleaner but when your cable box sits on a roll of toilet paper, well that sort of says it all…..Area was too sketchy, went down the road to Garberville.

If you are looking for personalized bathrobes and a mint on your pillow, this may not be your choice. However, if you would like a clean, budget-friendly room, with fluffy, soft towels and beds that are so comfortable you fall asleep immediately, then here's your place. The owner's customer service, including understanding family issues and even a sudden flight cancellation, were all handled in a friendly, kind manner. If I come back through Redway this autumn, I will definitely stay here again. My only issue is that I would have like the bathtub to have those little non-slip strips on the bottom, since I am getting a bit older and a little nervous about falls. Otherwise, I have no complaints and look forward to my next trip to Redway.

The reviews on this hotel are so weird. Some pollyannish and glossy and others down right frightening. The truth is part way in between. So read this review and know whqt your are getting. The Northern Inn is strange. First, there was no sign from the street so we couldn't find the place until we double backed and guessed we found it by nearby address numbers. It is noisy. There is a bar next door and bar noise and music easily filters through the thin walls. When you checkin there are bowls of free earplugs (you'll need them). Sort of clean. Sheets and bedding were clean so were able to sleep. Fresh clean towels. There was not a chair in the room. A desk and a table, but no chair. A guy a few rooms down with a pitbull dog seemed to be residential and selling drugs. Some Asian guests were frightened by a person who came up to their room window and wanted in. They approached the manager while I was checking in, very scared. He reassured him that the intruder was just trying to track down the prior guests. Redway seems like a nice out of the way town with some good eats, but take your chances at the Northern Inn. Seriously.

Came here with some students, arrive late to find the little office were we checked in full of Marijuana smoke! Would have left and gone somewhere else, but to late at night to try finding better rooms for a group of people. Room above one of our rooms had a drug/drinking party w/loud music, until about 3:30am and there is nobody on staff during the night to call for help. Floors in all 4 rooms were filthy with bits and pieces of pills on the floor in one of the rooms. Faucet in one room was not fastened to the sink. Supposedly non-smoking rooms - they have been smoked in so much, that it would take a whole lot of cleaning, repainting and airing out to get rid of the smell. A quick look at some of the other "guests", in the morning said a lot about what kind of hotel this has turned into...if it ever was nice... I doubt the reviwes are real! Photos on their website must have had a lot of help from Photoshop! Do yourself a BIG favour and stay away from this awful place!

My van broke down in Redway and I needed a place to stay while it was being fixed. I spent two nights at the Northern Inn and had an unexpectedly great time. Deb's Burgers nearby had great food, and people were genuinely friendly everywhere I went in Redway. Because of the storm the highway was closed so I became friends with other stranded travelers. The owner of Inn made all of us feel welcome, and really took an interest in us. The room (102) was in fine condition and there was lots of hot water. There is also a great coffee roaster in town.
