Much like my beloved ‘Niners in the 2024 Super Bowl, this hotel had a lot of good things going for it, but just fell short of being great. First, the good stuff: Easy to find, with surprisingly ample and convenient parking considering the old-timey downtown location. Great location for exploring downtown Placerville, and near enough to the highway for exploring the larger vicinity. We were in the “Merlot” room, which faces the street and has a window on the 2nd floor balcony. I imagine that could be pretty noisy during peak season, but it wasn’t bad when we were there. The room was clean and comfortable. The lobby is lovely and inviting, with some very interesting memorabilia/newspaper articles about the history of the hotel. Now the not so good stuff: The furniture in our room was old. Not antique-old, just old-and-tired-old. Yes, the end table was an antique, but two of its feet were missing, so it sat all wonky and crooked and basically untrustworthy as a table. Both the kitchenette and the bathroom decor were quite dated (late 80’s? Early 90’s?) and for some strange reason there were two mini fridges; one integrated into the kitchenette and the other just hanging out in the room. Weird. The kitchenette was not well stocked, so if we had wanted to use it, we really couldn’t. When we arrived to check in, the gal at the desk sighed a lot and acted like we were really inconveniencing her. I overheard her on the phone with another guest, and they seemed to be really annoying her as well. It’s really too bad that she literally was our first impression of the hotel. I had heard that the hotel was haunted. I can only say we didn’t notice anything unusual (which also disappointed me, but ghosts don’t always play by the rules, do they?) so I can neither confirm nor deny that claim. I can’t say we won’t ever stay there again, but I’m certainly not in a hurry to do so. It was fine, but not grand. Good, but not great. Underwhelming to be sure. With a tiny bit of effort, it could be so much more! Just like my ‘Niners! —maybe next year…

We have been staying here for the past 10 years. Services have steadily DECREASED while prices have increased. I have had to fix something in our room ( always stay in the same room each year) every time. On our recent stay, a "resort fee" of $10 per day was added that was not disclosed as well as a $2 credit card processing fee per day, even though they processed the billing one time at the start of our stay. They do not accept cash. The resort fees were waived when I complained about them. Though it is centrally located, I am very disappointed and doubt if we will be back.

Yes, the hotel is old, and it is historic. This is a hotel that differs from many others. The room was nice and decent and relatively clean. Very convenient location right on the main street in Placerville. The old and the historic have their charm, but nevertheless some maintenance and upgrades must be done. It must be possible to get rid of the terrible smell in the gangways and the reception area and still keep the “old and historic”. But all in all, a pleasant stay and I really recommend everyone to try a night or two at Cary House. There is nothing to be scared about here (except from the price level, maybe). Incidentally, I saw no ghosts during my stay. The closest I got to ghosts must have been one of the employees at reception who looked like a ghost when I had some questions along the way. Ahead of my stay, I had some questions which I communicated via the messaging service on the booking page I used. My request was never answered

Zero energy from reception I stopped in to inquire about event and group booking. The young woman at the desk couldn’t be bothered. She was filing her nails or looking at her phone and had zero energy for me. I had come in full of positive expectation — about the meeting. Room or group rates. She just sort of yawned and then grudgingly gave me someone else’s email address. I’ve taken my event elsewhere. .

If your idea of “historic” is old and worn out, Cary House is the place for you. We’ve stayed there twice, only because it’s the best bad option in town, near where our kids live. The only clean part of the room was the bathroom, which is likely because it appeared to have been renovated in recent years. The rest of it was dismal. The carpet was filthy to the point of not wanting to go barefoot on it. The bedspread and blanket had clearly not been washed in ages. The chairs and sofa in our suite were musty and stained. There was a fist hole in the bedroom door that was patched on only one side. The kitchen provided almost nothing in the way of cookware and utensils. No knives, not even butter knives, as if we couldn’t be trusted with them. We weren’t there for the ghosts, and also didn’t see any, so don’t care about that part. As far as I’m concerned, the place is haunted by dirt and apathy through to its tired old bones. We’re done with trying it one last time. This was the last.

I really wanted to like this place and there are certainly good aspects, but I would never return. First the Pros: Location is great if you want to be in the middle of Downtown Free Parking Rooms reasonably clean Our bed was comfortable (had read reviews that claim otherwise) King suite was spacious Cons: While the room was clean enough, it needs attention (peeling wallpaper in bathroom, paint, stained carpets, etc.) Location...some may not like how noisy it is in the room late at night given the bar across the street...not a bother for us, though. Air conditioning--didn't work great (but it's an old hotel) Why we would never stay there again: We booked our room at the regular rate several days prior to arriving. When we arrived, the front desk person told us their policy had changed just yesterday (after we had booked), and they now charge a $12 resort fee. I reminded them that I booked the room at the original rate and there was no resort fee, but they said it was their new policy and we had to pay it, even though we booked the room before the policy went into place! That is completely nuts. It's not the $12, but just the fact they changed the rate AFTER we booked. This is a bait and switch hotel/management. I asked what we might get with this new $12 resort fee...there is nothing people get, apparently...just a money grab. Also have to add that the front desk people were awfully rude about the policy, then never acknowledged us again as we walked by them several times over the next two days. There are better local options for staying in Placerville.

I was in a road trip with my son when we stopped in town for a beer. We were tired and checked the hotel for availability for just one night. We read some of the reviews and weren’t certain but decided to take a risk. The Cary House Hotel is wonderful. Yes, it’s old but very charming. Don’t listen to that one complain about the AC, it worked great. Staying here is like taking a small trip in time comfortably. Now what can I tell you about Joshua and his staff. Fantastic!!! I left my wedding ring and immediately called when I realized it about 2 hrs away. The response was quick. The ring was found and mailed to me in Florida. I doubt I would have the same experience somewhere else. If you’re in town, stay at the Cary House.

Came to stay for a night on a Saturday. Overall, great hotel but a bit pricey and there is a bar that plays loud music across the street - not horrendously loud but noise. Beds fairly uncomfortable as they are too firm. Staff was quick to assist with check in (literally took 30 seconds) as well as check out. Very clean historic hotel with a kitchen and fridge. Near several stores on the quaint main street. Free parking behind the building.

Fantastic historic hotel. Great location right in the charming downtown area. Our check in was expedited by a lovely young lady, Kayla, who was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and personable. The room was on the fourth floor accessed by a vintage and somewhat scary historic elevator😳
