26 miles downstream from Yosemite Valley , we are located on a small valley under a grove of oaks in a former scouts camp. We are best known for our authentic old-style mountain resort character and social atmosphere. We have everyone from backpackers to young families who enjoy this place. The June Bug Cafe focuses on sustainable, local and fresh, in a daily changing menu with excellent vegan and vegetarian options as well as standard meats and seafood. The Cafe is considered to be one of the five best in the Yosemite Region. The Yosemite Health Spa is social and busy with herbal soaks, H2O2 Hot Tub and a hot rocks sauna. We have yoga on weekends. The private rooms are decorated well but all are different in style. Our family cabins and dorms are very popular. We align with the Hostelling International brand for our backpacker dorms. All accommodations are in stilted cabins. Tent Cabins are all well appointed and can be heated or regular for budget travellers.

We snagged a park pass for the first day Yosemite reopened, and already had reservations at the Yosemite Bug. We had not stayed there before, and were not sure what to expect with regard to the pandemic. The Bug handled everything wonderfully! Hand sanitizer and mask on before you enter to check in and same thing with their restaurant. The restaurant offered breakfast, lunch and dinner, and we ate dinner there both nights. Great food and super large portions! The tables are spaced apart indoors and outdoors to make everyone feel comfortable. We rented both sides of a cabin with a shared bath, so we didn't have to share the bathroom with anyone else. We were in the Sweet Water cabin, and it couldn't have been nicer. Great view of the trees and a nice porch to relax on after the day in Yosemite.
Definitely pay attention to the word "rustic" in the title of the resort. It's exactly that. But being in a natural setting with great food and nice people running the place is a beautiful thing, as is having a wonderful cafe on the premises. About a half hour to Yosemite entrance, and 45 minutes to the valley floor. Enjoy!

My husband and I stayed here over my Birthday. The tent cabins are very nice clean and have electricity (light and fan). The whole resort is on a hill so there is allot of hiking just to get to the restroom/showers and cafe!

The Yosemite tent cabins are some if the closest to the restrooms but also next to a dump site of sorts (are piled with miscellaneous junk (didn’t smell).

Some of the the tent cabins are so far from the bathroom it’s problematic for sensitive bladders (or those consuming alcohol).

The staff in the cafe was nice the food is pretty good. The sour dough toast phenomenal. Skip the hot chocolate it’s gross some kind of chocolate syrup (not Hershey’s and not enough and 2% milk warmed up but not hot). Coffee is passable.

The staff in the office was rude: I asked about the nearest river, water source they mentioned something about “the hornets nest” but told e they were unable to give me directions because it was off their property!!

They did not mention the Merced river!!!!!

The resort was hot high 90s to low 100s

We were told the YART ride was 45 minutes to yosemite it took 1.5 hours each way.

We were told we had to switch tent cabins our last night and check out by 10 am but that we could check directly into the next cabin. When we checked out of the first cabin we were told the check in was at 3 PM and we could ot check in until then.

This wasted time we could have been getting ready to take the YART to Yosemite!

Side note, I don’t understand how requiring people to use public transportation to enter Yosemite reduces COVID risks. Is public transport not the riskiest?

All in all this resort is cute and rustic with Wifi but not appropriate for travelers who want to be close to Yosemite or have access to swimming areas!!!

It’s great to wake up in Yosemite Valley but not everyone can score one of the few spots within the national park itself. The closest hotels to Yosemite are in El Portal and they are fine as regular motels go but not very inspiring. For a more private option 25 minutes from El Portal (1 hour from Yosemite Valley), the Yosemite Bug is a good choice.

We were driving Friday night from the Bay Area so the location was convenient as we could leave early from work at 3 pm and be at the Bug for dinner. Then drive to Yosemite early to beat the crowds and be back at the end of the day Saturday for the drive back home Sunday.

The Bug is a hostel with dorm rooms but given we were a family, we book a cabin with bathrooms. Cost was reasonable and the cabin had a refrigerator, chairs and a small deck outside. Our cabin was not totally private (we had rooms on both sides of us) but it was isolated enough. The property is set back far enough from SR 140 where we did not hear any traffic during the night. It’s not your luxury resort with down bedding, pool cabanas and gas fire pits — but more functional wood cabins. but we found it very comfy. With a restaurant that churns out tasty food for dinner and breakfast. So as a staging location for a full one or two day visit of Yosemite, it is a good option.

This is not your typical resort with swimming pools or pool service. But it is a great place to stay near Yosemite. We stayed in a family-style dorm room with bunk beds and a separate bath. But it was super clean and very comfortable. it was really hot when we were there and the AC was amazing!!! They stated there was no WIFI in the rooms only in the public areas of the resort, but we were able to get Wifi in our rooms. The staff was so friendly and helpful. There are more hotel-like rooms but we were looking for more of a camp-like experience and we were very happy. The restaurant was great!!! The food was amazing!!! It is situated on a hillside so just prepare for walking up and down a hill but there is parking close to the rooms so it was not difficult. I would highly recommend staying here if you are going to Yosemite it is about 40 min to the park entrance.

Awkward, odd location--Google Maps couldn't find it, sent me down some very sketchy private roads. Unpaved parking and walkways to/from rooms; muddy if there's rain. Noisy, very noisy. No microwave or coffee service (or TV); my room did have a great fridge. Extremely slow and inconsistent wifi. Quirky decor may appeal to some. Difficult, slow drive into Yosemite. All in all, GROSSLY overpriced at $220/night, based on a reservation made in January for May stay.

If you're looking for something akin to a backpacking hostel and you don't mind a pokey 52-mile round trip to/from the park, this may be the place for you. If you need or want a few more normal lodging amenities and/or more convenient access to Yosemite, I strongly suggest looking at either Cedar Lodge or Yosemite View Inn, both in/near the community of El Portal, essentially on the doorstep of the park. Unfortunately for me, my on line searches for lodging when planning my trip did not reveal either of those establishments.

We stayed at the Hummingbird Cabin while at Yosemite Bug. This is across the highway from the main resort up a steep roadway. We were informed at reception that this is a ‘sub-let’ and they were not responsible for what happens there. The cabin is owned by the people in the house above the cabin.
The cabin is in a quiet locale and is a good size for two people in a bed-sit format. The bed was nice to sleep on and the kitchen well equipped except for a sieve or colander. The bathroom is large and adequate. There is aircon. It is a very nice rustic retreat.
Two niggles:
1. We had to keep asking for toilet roll. Tip - two rolls will not suffice for six days. Luckily for us the main reception helped out with their supplies and said they’d take the matter up with the cabin owner.
2. Fix the wifi or do not advertise Netflix as a selling point when selling the let to this cabin. The wifi just wasn’t good enough to stream anything without severe buffering, if it ever worked, which it rarely did, for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Had a two night stay in an ensuite cabin with a double and a single bed. We had no trouble parking on the same level as our cabin, meaning we only had to carry our luggage up 1.5 flights of steps and along level paved paths or decking.

As expected the cabin was rather old fashioned in its furnishings but everything was clean and worked fine, except the fridge when we first arrived but that was fixed immediately by the helpful receptionist resetting the breaker.

The food at breakfast and dinner, plus the “trail” packed lunches was great and we made good use of the laundry facilities. It was lovely to be able to stay in the middle of nowhere, so far from home in the UK, but with all the facilities that we could need on hand.

We stayed here for two nights on a recent trip to Yosemite. We stayed in one of the private rooms and found it to be very comfortable if maybe a tad rustic. It would have been nice if there were more places to hang and store our clothes. Oddly there was a bookshelf with a built-in desk in the room but no dresser? By far the best thing about the resort is the cafe which has great food. There's also a nice kitchen if you prefer to cook your own food. We debated staying inside Yosemite but the lack of food options put us off. The resort is a pleasant 30-35 minute drive to the Yosemite entrance and worth the tradeoff for us.

When I made a reservation at Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort, I opted to pay a premium for a room that promised more privacy. However, upon my arrival, they assigned me to a shared dormitory with 12 other individuals. Despite my dissatisfaction and protest, they informed me that my preferred room was unavailable and that this was the only option they could provide. Their response displayed a complete lack of concern for my comfort and grievances, suggesting instead that I should be grateful for having a place to sleep. After persistently raising my concerns for two days regarding the breach of my reservation, they eventually relocated me to the originally chosen room. The receptionist, unfortunately, lacks any hospitality training, demonstrating rudeness in her communication and failing to instill any confidence in the guests.

We knew we wanted to save money on our trip around CA so we booked a tent cabin with a full bed for 2 nights at the Yosemite Bug and it was just perfect! The cabin was simple but clean. The bathrooms and showers were modern and renovated and again, clean and well maintained.

The only warning to travelers would be to keep in mind this is built on steep hills. There are a lot of steep paths, roads, and stairways to climb if you stay here.

The shuttle stop from the bug is less than 1km - a short walk from the cottages/tents. No place to leave your car at the stop. We drove with our car to the Yosemite entrance and followed the signs to the general parking areas inside the valley area of the park. This is also where the shuttle will drop you if you visit the valley area of the park. Using your car allows you to return when you are tired - the shuttle schedule is once or twice a day. Yosemite is a huge park and staying inside the park is the best but significantly more expensive. we stayed near the northern parts, then at the bug to visit the valley area and we also stayed more south to visit the southern areas of the park,
